sirius has been mute since he was a kid (family trauma related or just the way he is, doesn’t matter). he communicates mostly through sign language, writing, and a lot of very expressive faces and gestures (because that’s sirius for you)

the marauders learned bsl pretty quickly after becoming friends. james is the most expressive and dramatic with it, peter is solid but slow, and remus is nearly as good as sirius himself

they have a whole system of shortcuts and inside jokes in sign. sirius has a specific gesture that means “this is bullshit” that he uses constantly in front of his friends

james and sirius have this insane nonverbal communication. they can have whole conversations with just eyebrows and head tilts. remus and peter are often like “what the fuck did you just say to each other?”

peter is the reliable one. he’s always carrying an extra notepad and pen for sirius and never makes a big deal out of it

remus is incredibly patient and attuned to sirius. he never speaks for sirius unless sirius asks him to. he’ll also wait calmly while sirius types or signs

also he’s the one who translates most naturally when they’re in bigger groups, but he always looks at sirius first to make sure he’s okay with what’s being said

sirius carries a heavy brass zippo lighter everywhere, even though he’s trying to quit smoking. the clink-clack of the lid becomes his primary way of entering a conversation. one flick for yes, two for no, and a long, rhythmic fidgeting for i’m thinking. remus, peter and james can tell sirius’ mood from across the room just by the speed of the clicking

remus learns to read every micro-expression sirius makes. he knows the difference between “i’m tired,” “i’m overwhelmed,” and “i’m about to cause problems on purpose”

if we talk about intimacy, early on remus is a bit nervous about misreading sirius’ signals during sex, so they develop a very clear tap system (two taps for slow down, three for stop, one for more)

sirius is incredibly vocal with his body and communicates a lot with his eyes and breath. when he wants more he’ll pull remus down by the back of the neck and look at him with this intense, needy stare until remus understands

remus talks softly the whole time, murmuring praise and checking in (“good? yeah?”) while watching sirius’ face. sirius nods or shakes his head against his neck

after, they cuddle and sirius will sign against remus’ chest or on his back, little “i love you”s and “i liked that thing you did” and “you’re everything”. remus answers out loud and presses kisses to his hands

they have nights where sirius is overstimulated or tired and they just use touch and eye contact the whole time; no signs or systems or whatever. it’s slower and deeper and remus is so gentle with him
