adding onto this I like to extrapolate from LZ's love for the perfume gift and it's #Neat tag
means he's actually quite a clean person, keeps his room and possessions in good routine order...which means it's especially obvious when something goes missing. I can imagine him very much suspecting Curd of taking his things but he's too entertained to confront Curd about it head-on and instead plots to catch his older brother in the act. He has not succeeded.
Curd has a phenomenal poker face if need be. I think when they were younger and LZ hid away to avoid training or tutors Curd would always know where he was but feign ignorance to anyone who asked.

What is your opinion about Iris Cookie and Dew Cookie?
Iris and Dew are great I love them very much. However it is kind of strange that Iris doesn't seem to remember Dew after she let him out of the temple? I guess it could be a mix of it being dark so Iris couldn't see his face well and his new appearance (timeline is unclear but perhaps he could've aged and his voice was different) was distinct enough for her to not recognize him. Minor hc that she has mild prosopagnosia.
But anyways I like the themes that they discuss! Iris is someone who is distinctly committed to the path that Aquaberry has set out for her, and Dew is the exact opposite. He hates the power he has and how it (and Aquaberry) has controlled his life. Dew longs to see the world beyond what he knows, but Iris doesn't share his adventurousness– so Dew thinks she is ignorant, refusing to see anything beyond her gate. He wants to change her mind, but she surprises him by being a lot more introspective than he'd assumed, choosing an "ugly" doll no one wanted. I think that's kind of the moment he truly recognizes he wants to help her run away from the straight and narrow together. He doesn't want to be alone in the wide, wide world, so he comes back to the one cookie he thinks he could convince to see it from his view. Only Iris is certain in her ways because she probably has seen the world off of the beaten path, and it was cruel to her. Dew is spoiled and self-assured even when he doesn't have all of the facts. Iris meets his insistence with firm, gentle kindness, and even when she is torn from her position she thinks of his words and still wishes to return to her place at the gate. And Dew returns to his past in order to have a chance to get Iris back.
It's just the way their arguments have subtly changed the way they think without totally taking away from their viewpoints on life. Dew still wants to be free and Iris wants to guard the gate, but they dip into each other's worlds in order to get back to each other.
What do you think would happen if Kohlrabi Cookie and Iris Cookie met each other?
Hm. Well, they're both pretty quiet people. I think there's a sort of inner steel to Iris that Kohl doesn't quite have, and past the given hostility that they'd have for each other for being on opposite sides, I think Iris would be a little "I know what you are 👁️👁️" much to Kohl's discomfort. Iris is very observant, her senses sharp in order for her to fulfill her duties as gatekeeper, so I'd think she could easily see past Kohl's idgaf shield and see the turmoil underneath.
They're another pair of mirrors, kind of-- Iris says that she's obligated to Aquaberry due to her taking her in.
So she's an example of someone who was saved because someone chose to extend their hand. Which Kohl did not get to experience after Shallot... until Buttermilk/Melanchream. Most cookies would probably have pity for Kohl if they knew his past, and I don't think Iris would be an exception. Kohl might see yet another cookie with their life purpose set out for them and feel bitter.
Hm.. Does it have any Melancream Cookie headcanons?
Melanchream:
- Melan loves doting on her little cuties, which would be cute if not for the fact she also likes lightly hurting them too. W/ shallot's hair she can be a little rough with the tangles, and with sundae she loves pulling her around by her strings, which are somewhat sharp (kind of like a garrote). This is also why she's so fond of piercing her minions, so she could have an excuse to see their faces contort in pain right up close
- she could be mildly cannibalistic. I think she likes the taste of strawberry jam. (I use a lot of "consumption as a metaphor for love" when it comes to the calamities)
- implied by the first hc but I think she is a sadist to some extent
- if she likes an organ or bone from something (someone) she's killed, she'll incorporate it into her own body. She has duplicates of the same bone/organ in her body as a result.
- her body is/was surprisingly weak, it's just malleable, and she can graft bone shards and such to herself if she gets injured (or just replace the bone or sections of skin etc w a corpse's)
Phoenix Pepper:
- when phoenix gets enraged little flaming feathers will start to sprout all along her body. They'll retract if she cools off.
- every so often she'll "accidentally drop" one of her feathers around the market. Whoever catches/carries one of her feathers is said to be granted great fortune, and replicas are often sold around Chinese New Year/its equivalent.
- she was a reckless flirt when she was younger.
- she's fond of her appearance, though not because she's vain. It's simply because she takes great pride in wearing the signature colours of her floor.
- she's been a fan dancer since she was little / not a guardian. It's what led her to take up fans as her weapon of choice. She's been trying to teach Sancho and Longxia but they're not very good at it.
- she has lots of tattoos, partially because she likes them artistically and partially because she loves supporting the niche artists on her floor.

there's kind of like three lists: there're the ships I like bc I think they are genuinely compatible and there's the crackship-y list where I think their personalities and/or dynamics are too interesting not to buy into. My true favourites tend to fall into the space between these two extremes
list 1:
- kohllot (specifically when they're younger. Tbh I like them as QPR inasmuch as I like em romantically)
- irisdew (transfem dew for yuri flavour)
- cherrycream or whatever the cherry cola x cream soda ship name is (most recent update really sold me on them, I adore that cherry cola instantly defenestrated herself as a better alternative to talking to cream soda)
- sundaeroti (I think maybe sundae showed roti the power of love and memories...I like hc'ing roti as an android to lean into that. Aigis arc)
- sonicmochi (cringefail pathetic man attempting to win over foxgirl by aurafarming and fails miserably. he hits the Vegeta staring up into the rain pose and she's endeared by his pathetic-ness. Like one of her foxes methinks.)
- QPR basilbarley? (I have taken a liking to aroace barley recently. But still think him and pesto are cute. It makes sense just trust me)
- frostmint (lots of yearning potential methinks. Cuddling too. Casual intimacy for "warmth." My 280 pound wolfish boyfriend decides when the hug ends)
List 2:
- butterrabi (their storylines have a surprising amount of similarities and they're both very devotional people. It would be so messy.)
- butterzest (LZ ragebaits and buttermilk falls for it everytime. Buttermilk thinks he's doing something real by dragging LZ down to his level. LZ does not care and likes the thrill.)
- buttercurd (ANGST POTENTIAL when you get so close to understanding someone but just barely fall short and it collapses both of your lives. Despite everything buttermilk still craves Curd's recognition and Curd wishes to fix what could've been. This may get disproved if we are given more Curd dialogue/characterization)
- madlongxia (creepily affectionate maybe-god and the unfortunate object of their affections who suffers greatly as a result. chef's kiss)
- melanllot / shallochream (?) (same as madlongxia)
- melansundae (same as above)
- kohllongxia (this one's way out there but my evidence is mainly in that post where someone asked how a kohlrabi and longxia meeting would go. It's not very well founded but idk. Something about it makes sense to it. Kind of just for funsies)
List 3:
-kohlzest (yeah they're mirrors but also they love to argue it's their enrichment. Even if they're on opposite sides they're still intrigued by the other and want to know more / want to see them live. Two souls cautiously circling one another, magnetized until they collide in a brilliant spark. They both kind of conceal how much they care [Kohl behind his idgaf'ing and LZ behind his flippancy]. I don't have enough words to explain why they compel me)
- kohllotzest (younger, works best in ideal-world AU. Kohlrabi "I will lose everything I love and it is pointless to make connections" Cookie, Shallot "Everything in life matters and it is important to connect with and be kind to as many souls as you can" Cookie, Lemon Zest "Life matters so long as it interests me and I want to live in order to get to those moments when my heart races and I can't stop smiling" Cookie. You must picture it gesturing wildly to a red string board. I feel like a crazy person when I think about their potential for too long)
in my au he was kinda forced to be a good person bc a) melancream got ohko'd and b) the power of (childhood) friendship
but since he ended up being less athletic after settling down hes a bit chubbier now

My understanding of buttermilk's character almost entirely revolves around his devout nature. The part that's really interesting to me about his character is that he was originally on track to be a good person– or at least a decent one.
His moral compass is entirely dependent on who he devotes himself to. His priest attire (especially in contrast to the other Citrus Knights we've seen, who don't use nearly as many religious motifs) is indicative of his susceptibility to fanaticism on a level that could be called religious. If the Order stipulates he has to be a good person, he'll bow his head and obey. Melanchream stipulates he commit misdeeds in her name: he will do it with no hesitation.
He's a cautionary tale: devotion to that extreme isn't a good thing, even when it is directed at something that could be considered "good." I think there's not as much "redemption" that he would need as he just needs to find purpose in his own existence. I don't think Buttermilk is inherently a bad person in that he wants to hurt people, he's a lost soul desperate for someone to validate his life, whatever the cost. I think that idea kind of comes through in his costume as well: he will lead souls to the grave with a smile, unknowing or I believe uncaring of his own death. Just so long as he served his purpose.
That kind of feeds into his physique too, in my opinion. He keeps himself in good shape to be of maximum use to his "god." In the event he could ever live happily without one...I think he would be okay letting his physique slip.
If "redemption" means to rid him fully of his devotion...dunno. Feels kind of like a declawing. I don't think I'd like him as much if he wasn't such a devout.
So many of TOA's characters are "What would you do for the people you love/care for?" I think that's why I like the story so much. Love can enlighten and empower, and love can hurt and kill. (I think that's part of why Melanchream is so weirdly affectionate towards her puppets [and Plague towards Longxia], but that's for a different post.)

How do you think Buttermilk would react if someone hugged him?
I like this ask a lot ...
TLDR: badly.
If it's anyone he doesn't know or trust I think he'd react with restrained disgust. Strangers' touches tend to linger badly and uncomfortably on his skin, even if it's quick and light, so a full hug would feel almost unbearably yucky. He'd retreat if he could and might wanna wash off to try and rid himself of the reminders.
However I do think he is highkey touch-starved. I don't think his parents showed him a lot of physical affection, so he's in a permanent state of "psh I don't need physical touch I'm above it" and then when someone he is friends with actually touches him it's like. hyperstimulus. I drew a sloppy buttercurd comic as a visual aid
not pictured is him alone replaying the touch over and over because what the fuck was that. why did he react like that. why was that not gross. what did curd do to him.
If it was a hug it would be that times a thousand. He'd freak out, to put it lightly. He'd have to be acclimated if he was ever to not react badly. Once he got past that major hurdle he'd be ok with em. Probably wouldn't feel comfortable seeking hugs out, but every so often is fine *sniffs haughtily*
