Thousands of people are checking in at Standing Rock to confuse the police

On Monday, Facebook was filled with posts from people using the site’s check-in feature to say that they were at Standing Rock Indian Reservation in Cannon Ball, North Dakota. The trend is a result of a viral Facebook post urging people to check into the site of the protests to “overwhelm and confuse” police who have been removing Dakota Access Pipeline protesters. But will it work?

An officer told Snopes that the claim that it will confused police is “absolutely false.“ 

If you want to do something about the plan and/or help the protesters, there are ways to show your support.

There’s also a White House petition with more than 294,000 signatures called “Stop construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.”

The tribe will use donations (which can be made via check or PayPal) for “legal, sanitary and emergency purposes,” according to its website.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, Black women are five times more likely than white women to obtain an abortion. This is primarily because of structural obstacles to accessing reproductive healthcare. Black women are also more likely to live in the south where state legislatures continue to restrict abortion access. No one will be surprised to learn that the campaign to build a national movement against gentrification is being waged out of an office in Brooklyn, New York.

For years, the borough’s name has been virtually synonymous with gentrification, and on no street in Brooklyn are its effects more evident than on Atlantic Avenue, where, earlier this summer, a local bodega protesting its impending departure in the face of a rent hike, put up sarcastic window signs advertising  “Bushwick baked vegan cat food” and “artisanal roach bombs.”

Six decades after Emmett Till’s murder, and seven decades after Louis Till was executed by the U. S. Army, John Edgar Wideman investigates whether the father, like the son, suffered a perversion of justice of the kind that remains one of the ugliest scars on America’s soul.
