Thousands of people are checking in at Standing Rock to confuse the police
On Monday, Facebook was filled with posts from people using the siteâs check-in feature to say that they were at Standing Rock Indian Reservation in Cannon Ball, North Dakota. The trend is a result of a viral Facebook post urging people to check into the site of the protests to âoverwhelm and confuseâ police who have been removing Dakota Access Pipeline protesters. But will it work?
follow @the-future-now
Update: While the protesters in North Dakota have said they appreciate the show of support on Facebook, thereâs no evidence checking in on Facebook is actually helping them.Â
An officer told Snopes that the claim that it will confused police is âabsolutely false.âÂ
If you want to do something about the plan and/or help the protesters, there are ways to show your support.
Sign petitions:
âStop the Dakota Access Pipelineâ has more than 150,000 signatures on Change.org.
Thereâs also a White House petition with more than 294,000 signatures called âStop construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.â
Donate to protesters
Thereâs a GoFundMe account for the Sacred Stone Camp from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe t
Sacred Stone also has a specific fund for its legal defense
Donate to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
The tribe will use donations (which can be made via check or PayPal) for âlegal, sanitary and emergency purposes,â according to its website.
or go out and join the protests, but watch out: Protesting is not without risks.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, Black women are five times more likely than white women to obtain an abortion. This is primarily because of structural obstacles to accessing reproductive healthcare. Black women are also more likely to live in the south where state legislatures continue to restrict abortion access. Itâs a vicious cycle of misogynynior, classism & poverty. All legislated and controlled by white male representatives.

The displacement of longtime residents is more than just a matter of inconvenience, a Brooklyn-based group argues.
No one will be surprised to learn that the campaign to build a national movement against gentrification is being waged out of an office in Brooklyn, New York.
For years, the boroughâs name has been virtually synonymous with gentrification, and on no street in Brooklyn are its effects more evident than on Atlantic Avenue, where, earlier this summer, a local bodega protesting its impending departure in the face of a rent hike, put up sarcastic window signs advertising  âBushwick baked vegan cat foodâ and âartisanal roach bombs.â Â
Just down the block from that bodega are the headquarters of Right to the City, a national alliance of community-based organizations that since 2007 has made it its mission to fight âgentrification and the displacement of low-income people of color.â For too long, organizers with the alliance say, people who otherwise profess concern for the poor have tended  to view gentrification as a mere annoyance, as though its harmful effects extended no further than the hassles of putting up with pretentious baristas and overpriced lattes. Changing this perception is the first order of business for Right to the City: Gentrification, as these organizers see it, is a human-rights violation.
A Black and White Case: The Trial of Louis Till, Emmet Tillâs Father
BY JOHN EDGAR WIDEMANÂ
Before Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, and Trayvon Martin, there was Emmett Till, a black teenager who was murdered in Mississippi after allegedly whistling at a white woman. The failure to punish his killers for their crimesâhelped by a leak of his fatherâs World War II military fileâmade Till an agonizing symbol of how the American legal system has been used as an instrument of racial oppression. Six decades after Emmett Tillâs murder, and seven decades after Louis Till was executed by the U.âS. Army, John Edgar Wideman investigates whether the father, like the son, suffered a perversion of justice of the kind that remains one of the ugliest scars on Americaâs soul.

Know your rights and donât let ANYONE stop you from voting!
VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE and know your ballot. Learn about local and state candidates. Letâs build the government we need from the ground up
Do keep in mind though, To vote you must be of legal age and have registered to do so.  If either of these things is not right, They have every right to tell you to step out of the way and leave.
Trumpâs followers are planning on acting as âpoll watchersâ to make sure the election is not âriggedâ (defined by them as Trump losing).
Itâs entirely possible weâre going to see some voter intimidation at the polls.
The only person who has the right to tell you to leave if you are not registered is an official poll worker.
Nobody else, including âpoll watchers,â security at the polling building, etc.
Only offiicial poll workers, whoâs job it is to check you are registered and who you say you are.
if youâre not registered, the official poll worker at the table will tell you how to register. until youâre registered, they wonât hand you a ballot. thatâs the legal and proper way itâs done. any other attempt to keep you from voting is illegal.
if the poll worker gave you a ballot, and someone else tries to stop you, take their picture and tell the FBI.
[Image is a blue box with text in white, it reads:
VOTING IS YOUR RIGHT AS A CITIZEN If an alleged âpoll watcherâ tries to impede you at the voting booth: 1- Tell him to kindly step out of the way 2- Take his picture with a cell phone 3- Call the FBI FBI Civil Rights Division staff will be available by phone to receive complaints related to ballot access (202)307-2767 or toll-free at (800)253-3931. U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Voting Section can be reached at (202) 307-2767 or toll-free at (800) 253-3931. PLEASE PASS THIS ON]
