“Light Meets Shadow”
Setting: Horizon Labs Rooftop, New York City — Midnight.
Rain hums softly against the roof as thunder rumbles over Manhattan. Striker stands near the edge of the roof, jacket unzipped, lightning dancing faintly between his fingertips. Veil appears beside him — emerging from the mist like a whisper.
Before either can speak, a bright flare of magenta light splits the clouds.
Julie Power, a.k.a. Lightspeed, descends — energy wings unfurled, boots clanking against the slick metal surface. She shakes her hair loose and grins.
Striker (smirking): “You just can’t resist a dramatic entrance, can you?”
Julie: “I could say the same about you, Sparky. You light up the skyline every time you’re brooding.”
She turns her gaze toward Veil — assessing, curious, but not unkind. Veil’s misty form coalesces slightly, her outline glowing faintly silver beneath the moonlight.
Julie (tilting her head): “So this is her, huh? The infamous mystery girl who managed to keep Jonas from setting something on fire for an entire week.”
Veil (dryly): “Two weeks, actually.”
Julie: “Impressive. He usually can’t go forty-eight hours without a small explosion.”
Striker sighs, rubbing the back of his neck.
Striker: “Julie, this is Veil. Veil, Julie Power — interplanetary peacekeeper, cosmic powerhouse, and the only person I’ve ever met who can out-sass Captain Marvel.”
Julie (grinning): “Flattery noted. Might even believe some of it.”
Julie: “Alright, Veil. Tell me something — what do you see in him?”
Veil (pausing): “Someone who’s still learning to believe he’s more than his power set. Someone trying to be better, not just stronger.”
Julie (nodding slowly): “Good answer.”
Striker: “Wait, was this—were you testing her?”
Julie: “Of course I was. I’ve seen you crash and burn enough to know you need someone grounded.”
Veil (smirking faintly): “Then we’re both experiments in progress.”
Julie chuckles, visibly impressed.
Julie: “You’ve got bite. I like that.”
A sudden rip in the sky — a tear of crimson light — opens above them, spilling energy into the air.
Veil instinctively phases, her body turning to vapor as debris scatters. Striker charges his hands with lightning, and Julie rockets upward, tracing the anomaly with glowing contrails.
Julie (shouting over comms): “Dimensional instability — I’m detecting an echo from the Negative Zone!”
Striker: “That’s a Friday night for us.”
Veil (focused): “If it’s leaking through, we can contain it — but I’ll need someone on the other side to close it off!”
Julie: “Guess that’s me.”
Without hesitation, Julie dives through the rift, her light illuminating the chaos beyond — streaks of red and black swirling through her wake.
Veil’s misty arms extend upward, holding the rift open just long enough for her to stabilize it.
Striker channels his lightning into her mist, merging electricity and ether like an improvised circuit.
The portal collapses — a shockwave of light and fog rippling across the skyline.
When it clears, Julie reappears, landing between them — slightly scorched, but smiling.
Julie (catching her breath): “Well… that’s one way to meet the girlfriend.”
Veil (grinning softly): “You make a good first impression.”
Striker (relieved): “You both terrify me, by the way.”
Julie: “You love it.”
Striker: “...Yeah, maybe.”
Julie steps forward, placing a glowing hand on Veil’s shoulder.
Julie: “You’ve got his back. I can see that. He’s lucky.”
Veil (quietly): “So am I.”
A long pause — then Julie smirks again, her usual warmth returning.
Julie: “Alright, I officially approve. Don’t make me regret it.”
Striker: “You’re acting like my older sister.”
Julie: “Please. If I were your sister, I’d have grounded you three dimensions ago.”
They laugh — all three of them — standing against the skyline as the storm clears, stars faintly visible between passing clouds.
Veil: “You think this is the part where the credits roll?”
Striker: “Nah. This is just the pilot.”
