It's been a while since I posted.
I'm trying really hard to get my garden going,
so far, the deer, the weather, and the earliest grasshoppers I've ever seen, are all working against me, but I'm not giving up.
I just started some experiments to find the source of some herbicide issues I'm having with my indoor vegetables, and if I can find the origin, I'll begin work on a lineage of pleurotus trained to break it down. (probably Pleurotus djamor, due to aggression and competitor-hardiness) If I'm successful with that endeavor, any mushrooms produced will not be fit for consumption, but I can spore print, discard the fruit, and manage the genetics specifically for the utility of decontamination.
Most of my fruit trees are waking up, so I'm pleased with that, and blackberries planted last year are rocking out. Mulching and rabbit manure probably helped.
I have a bed that I inoculated with winecap, (Stropharia rugosoannulata) and it surprised me by producing one small mushroom really early. I Planted an artichoke plant in that bed, and I'm telling you, the mycelium is dense and pervasive, so I have high hopes for a good flush once the bed has some shade.
I've got asparagus, tomatoes, sugar pumpkins, valerian, lots of potatoes, and various brassicas in the ground at this point. Potato plants look healthy, I'm holding my breath and waiting to see on everything else. I have lasagna rows to plant, last frost date is here, and I'm going to do some direct sowing. Definitely having issues already, but I'm not going to give up. I certainly prefer direct sow to transplanting starts. I have some sugar cane going inside, and some other stuff that I'm moving outdoors once its warm enough; tomatillos, dragonfruit cacti, lion's tail.
I'm going to give amaranth a shot this year.
I'm keeping an eye on a shiitake log too.
And rabbits had kits! Not sure how many kittens, I'm trying to give mamas and babies their space, but maybe I'll get some pictures sometime soon.
Built a second pallet-derived chicken coop and tripled the flock.
