STAR TREK SNW S4 E2 SPOILERS YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED [Yes I will be using this from now on]
WARNINGS FOR SUICIDE AND SELF HARM TALK. AND JUST OVERALL DEATH. I have a lot to say about this episode.

I have. a LOT. of thoughts. First off I obviously have to pitch what Scotty would see in that situation. I might write it but that would mean I have to watch that episode aGAIN and I dON'T LIKE IT IT'S TERRIFYING.
Spock self harm count, that we know about: 2! WHAT THE FUCK. I mean technically he didn't know this time but HE STILL DID IT?? SPOCK ARE YOU GOING TO BE OKAY??? ALSO MORE FUCKING TRAUMA FROM WATCHING YOUR SUPERIOR OFFICER KILL HERSELF? I THINK? AND YOUR FUCKING CAPTAIN CHOP HIS FUCKING FINGERS OFF AND OH, YOUR EX CUTTING OFF THE TIP OF YOUR EARS AND TRYING TO GET RID OF YOUR VULCAN SIDE [which, coincidentally, the LAST time he committed self harm it was to cut out his HUMAN side so. Fun :D]
JIM SAW HIS BROTHER DIE. IT DOES NOT MATTER IF HE WASN'T REAL. Like, Jim could've known he wasn't real, it does not matter how you swing it, it would still be traumatizing as HELL because THAT. IS YOUR BROTHER. EVEN IF IT'S JUST AN IMAGE. AND IT'S WORSE BECAUSE HE DID THINK HE WAS REAL. THAT POOR MAN HE JUST WENT THROUGH A BREAKUP AND GOT TOLD SHE LEFT WITH THEIR CHILD BECAUSE JIM DIDN'T COME BACK ON TIME. ALSO UH. LET'S TALK ABOUT THE FACT THAT HE WAS STABBED. FOR A MINUTE. BY SOMEONE HE TRUSTS. Like, as of episode 10, Jim doesn't strike me as somebody who trusts people with his being that often. Like he confided in her that Carol broke up with him, they HAVE trust in each other. And then she fucking stabs him. I'll talk about La'an in the next paragraph because she's an entirely different can of worms. So yeah that wasn't an illusion she actually did that. I don't think he's going to be able to trust her again. for a while. He wouldn't exactly blame her, I just feel like he won't be comfortable around her after this. WHICH MAKES SENSE. Either that or SHE keeps her distance from HIM for the same reason. She doesn't want him to have like, a panic attack or something around her.
LA'AN. HOLY SHIT. So she stabbed Jim and also BEFORE that was lead to believe she tried to kill ERICA which made UHURA run away. They weren't real, but again, she didn't know that. And this poor girl who really doesn't seem to know how to properly deal with trauma got convinced she was evil or something, not a monster, just evil, because that's "who she was", and then stabbed Jim. When they got transported back, I know she saw the fear in his eyes, in his being, and realized what she did. I feel like she and Spock spent a lot of time together after this. Also not to mention that this happened because she doesn't know who she is. She's scared of herself. She breaks bones and it doesn't hurt. Poor girl needs a hug. Everybody needs. something. They need help.
I can't really tell if it would be better or worse if Sam were there for Jim after everything. I feel like Jim would look at Sam and feel. a lot of emotions. Sam wouldn't know why, nor would he ask. He'd give his brother space. Like a good brother would.
I feel like all of these people wouldn't want to see the other people involved, even the fake versions, for a while [Spock w/ T'Pring and maybe Una and Pike but that's kind of unrealistic for him unfortunately, La'an with Jim and maybe Uhura, Jim maybe with Sam and definitely with La'an].
Also I feel like Pike should be fired or something for all he leaves out of his reports dear gods 😭
Episode 2 is definitely not gonna be everyone's cup of tea, which is fine. Thats the beauty of Trek. It has something for everyone. But this? This is absolutely my cup of tea.
I'm not a huge horror fan, but I do love psychological horror/thrillers specifically, and this episode is exactly in that lane. This is probably the best horror episode, in my opinion, that Trek has done. There was a little bit of every thing in here, constant dread, ghostly figures in the background, body horror, gore, etc. But my favorite aspect, obviously, was the psychological one. I enjoyed the guessing game it played, constantly making us wonder if what we were seeing was real. They genuinely had me believing T'pring was actually there for a moment before pulling the rug out from beneath me. There is a true art to that kind of psychological game in film, and I believe it was well done here.
Using characters' insecurities and anxieties as the focus is what drew me in this episode. That has always been what engaged me in regards to this particular genre; the examination of the human psyche. There is something inherently frightening about facing our darker natures, about facing the parts within us we rather not confront. Which, for me, is far more interesting than plain monsters. (Though, I do enjoy that as well)
With Spock, I found it fascinating (pun intended) that they went with T'Pring as the specter haunting him. Did it use her because there is still some residual guilt or regret for the distance between them they couldn't cross? It would seem so, since they delve into his anxieties about his dual heritage here in a way that SNW hasn't before. (Which is refreshing because they haven't always been the best in this regard lately.) His heritage was always an insecurity he held in his relationships, especially with T'Pring. While she always tried to incorporate and honor his human heritage in small ways, there were always moments where it became an obstacle in their relationship. The surprise date story being an example. It was a constant worry simmering in the background. Spock could never just be. And the way this episode examined that was... horrifying to say the least. Finding out Spock had cut off HIS OWN EARS was a fucked up twist. Jesus.
Kirk's story definitely did it for me. I appreciated that SNW is exploring the early relationship with David and Carol, and giving us more detail to what was hinted at in ST3. The line Sam says about Kirk's being destined to die in some cold dark corner of space is, for lack of a better word, bleak. (If you know, you know) And the ending with him sitting alone in the conference room with the outgoing transmission going unanswered is heartbreaking.
La'an's story is the one, I think, we are all keeping an eye on. Her experience on this ship was especially interesting. She didn't have a single ghost haunting her, but multiple. The captain and the entire crew. Starfleet is her family. This is something she has mentioned before, and I believe that her anxieties are not just about her augmented DNA, and her fears about becoming a monster, but how that will affect her connection with her found family. The Enterprise crew.
I have noticed some talk about how the episode doesn't explain anything in regards to what happen on the ship and how that disappointed people. Its a valid opinion. Its definitely a matter of preference and taste, and not a fault of the episode. I think it's great. I LOVE ambiguity in an ending, especially in a horror. We don't always need answer or have a story wrapped with a little bow. I like being left to question what the hell just happened sometimes. Pike said it best. Space can be a terrifying place, and it doesn't always leave you with answers. He sent six cases to division 12, and two are still left pending. Thats unsettling to me. Uncertainty is scary. I love it.
And speaking of Division 12, why is this not being discussed? We literally got a new Star Trek lore drop and no one is talking about it? Like what?! A paranormal division? Like Star Trek X-Files? Where's that show? I would watch that in a heart beat.

This episode was a whole lot of nothing, so I don't really have much to say about it. It was fine, just... Boring. I don't feel like we learned anything new about the characters, and the horror elements weren't particularly scary or creepy to me. It also kinda frustrated me that we never found out what was going on. I know that that was kind of the point, but I don't think it worked for me, because the episode wasn't interesting enough on its own. It just felt so empty of any actually new or interesting ideas. I understand what they were going for and I appreciate the character moments, but it was all just kinda obvious. At least it wasn't a frustrating episode like the last one.
Pike remains stupid tho. Also I'm starting to get sick of him just sweeping everything under the rug. "Starfleet doesn't have to know about this... I'll leave it out of the report." I know it's necessary sometimes to avoid consequences of episodes which go off the rails like this, but it's being overused. I feel like there should be some consequences sometimes.
I liked that we got to see Sam again ^_^ (kinda).
Also the way Division 12 kept getting mentioned and the blatant exposition about it from La'an (that was genuinely such bad writing wtf) makes me suspect that Division 12 will be back this season, or in another project coming soon. Idk how I feel about that, it seems like a pretty generic SCP type organisation, but there is potential there if executed well.

I've just seen The Griffin Incident. Minor spoilers ahead.
This is a much better episode than the previous episode. This is a very traditional episode where they find all the people are missing from a ship, but doing traditional episodes has tended to be where Strange New Worlds has done really well.
I also feel like this episode did the horror elements reasonably well for a Trek episode. I mean, there's always going to be limits to how far they can go with that because they have to make it fit into the utopian vision the show at least nominally has and also make it broadly family friendly (which SNW has typically been), but this is about as scary as you can get with it outside of eps about certain long running antagonists like the Borg or the Cardassians.
I'm assuming this is probably going to come up again later, though. This was a bit of a cliffhanger episode and while SNW has generally been a bit more episodic than other Kurtzman era shows, I can't imagine they'd do too many cliffhangers like this unless they were hoping to circle back to it later.
Honestly, my main takeaway from this episode is that this should have been the opening episode of the season. It's not my favourite episode of the show or anything like that and there isn't really anything I wanna dig into super deeply, but it is a passable episode, and it is a lot better than Valles Marineris.
