Funny the parallels watching The Thick of It and reading the Elbaph arc. (Yeah the Gods Knights are cartoonishly evil but these Blair era politicians are worse IMO)
A friend of a friend was doing commissions to pay for a resin printer and buying more paint, so I got some of my favorite 40k dudes as display pieces with my books at the biggest size they could be. I didnāt realize just how many complexities there were in upsizing 3D resin prints. Orikan is much taller than Trazyn partially because itās the updated model and because of the tactical rock.

Canāt believe in the Astarion origin if you reveal youāre a vampire in front of Laeāzel you can reference the āweāre just normal men, we're just innocent menā meme.

Major spoilers for Astarionās personal quest, The Dark Urge questline, and game endings.Ā
When I was trying out different paths for how Astarion reacts to the Dark Urge questline something that stood out to me was the wide difference in responses Astarion has, as well as the way he contradicts himself. This essay started as a way of trying to explain āwhy does Ascendant Astarion tell you to take over the world when he immediately becomes a thrallā from a Watsonian (in-universe explanation) vs a Doylist (out-of-universe explanation) and wound up being a focused on; why does Ascendant!Astarion react so differently to when you break up?Ā
There are 4 opportunities to break up with Ascendant!Astarion; 1) refuse to become his thrall immediately after the ritual you breakup and have a follow up conversation the next morning, 2) become his thrall and break up with him whenever before killing the Eldar brain, 3) break up with him on the dockside convo at the beginning of the ending, 4) in the last scene with him say you want to break up at which point he doesnāt let you: āYou're mine remember? The tadpole is gone, which means your future is mine to decide. How lucky you are that I chose you as my consort. Chose you to help me take Baldurās gate, then sit by my side as I rule it. Thereās no backing out now - weāll be together forever. I can promise you thatā¦ā.Ā Ā
Comparing breakup conversations with Spawn!Astarion after killing Cazador, Ascendant!Astarion responds with so much more spitefulness and defensive anger across the board, even at Spawn!Astarions most angry (breaking up with him in the literal last conversation) it doesn't match the anger and cruelty in senario 1. To me it reads as him wanting to make the player character just as hurt and upset as he is after a very emotional day and the lines get really nasty:
He then wonāt say anything but āwhy the hells are you bothering me nowā until you do 3 long rests which stands out considering if you break up in any other non ending scenario heāll talk to you pleasantly afterwards.Ā
That conversation days afterwards is really interesting where his āgoalā is to get you to agree to be partners in crime together, and in doing so is the most honest he gets about how a romantic relationship would have been unhealthy:
In regards to love It's really interesting what Astarion will say about love during the conversation where he asks you to become his spawn:
If the pc expresses insecurity about being a spawn heāll reassure them and say he loves them, in a way that deliberately parallels his Act 1 seduction conversation down to the way that he starts with a degrading pet-name āwhat can I do for my dearest petā vs āhereās my little treat with their cheeks all flushedā.
Just like the seduction scene he wants the pc on his side and attached to him, but if you push back on him during this conversation its clear he no longer believes in love just power exchanges:
If the player stays together with Ascendant!Astarion a dialogue option is that heās seem distant since the ritual, and heāll imply it's due to his new powers but he does that looking to the up and right that others have mentioned he does when he lies. What makes more sense and is better character writings is the Watsonian answer of: killing all your siblings and 7,000 others (including people Astarion regretted victimizing and then had to look in the eye and condemn to death) will fuck a person up. He knows his hands are bloody so he has to believe he got everything he wanted, and he did really want this because if you leave it up to him he will chose to do the ritual vs just killing Cazador.Ā Ā
I think Astarion has to believe he is better (which in his view means more powerful) than his past self as part of believing the sacrifice was worth it. In scenario 2 heāll say this if you bring up his past self:
Whatās a lot more interesting is if you bring up his past self in the morning after conversation of scenario 1 heās genuinely shocked and caught off guard:
What I found interesting was Astarion talks in the same way about how the ritual was worth it and the cool new powers heāll totally get as he does advocating for endings that are bad for him. If you become the Absolute leader Astarion becomes a thrall just like all the other companions whether you do it on your own or in Bhaalās name. For all his talk about Bhaalās army being āan unsurpassable dowryā and how heāll command it, he canāt do jack shit if the player defies Bhaal and then either kills themselves or becomes fully possessed by Bhaal. The Doylist answer is Larian games just have a very limited amount of endings and the characters are forever stuck at lvl 12 , the more interesting Watsonian answer is Astarian is lying/exaggerating out of ignorance or because he really doesnāt have a clue of what to do next and is trying to cover for that.
The whole ritual plotline is very obviously Astarion continuing the cycle of abuse vs helping others, the abuse Cazador inflicted was akin to the abuse he suffered from Vellioth, down to Astarion commenting that Cazadorās rules came from Vellioth. It's also clear that Ascendant!Astarion has processed none of his trauma re: Cazador, after the ritual he says āI will not think about him. I donāt want to even say his nameā and he shouts at you to be silent if you mention Cazador when you break up in scenario 2. I personally think Astarion sees you staying with him as a spawn degrading because he was degraded and abused when he was a spawn based on a line he has if the pc is cursed to go mad with The Dark Urge, where he relates too much to the character.
I think the DnD rules of absolute morality that vampires are extremely evil is a boring answer to why Ascendant!Astarion becomes possessive and controlling, especially since Larian has pushed against that theme throughout the game. Yes Astarion has an Act 1 line about how vampires don't turn spawn into full vampires because they don't share power, in my opinion that line falls flat when considering will have kind and supportive dialogue to the player in a number of other Act 3 quests. Whether the its the Watsonian answer that Larian wasnāt going to rewrite large chunks of dialogue when there are Act 3 quests with no companion reactions or the Doylist answer that he is just extremely possessive and has attachment issues about the threat of you leaving him is an interesting dilemma.
In regards to scenario 4 it's a fucking huge contrast to Astarion's whole character arc about learning to trust and being around someone who respects his boundaries and consent, where here doesn't respect the player's boundaries or consent. It's such a contrast to scenario 3 that happens right before it where Astarion says "We have served our respective purposes, we're free to go wherever we wish" and doesn't mind you breaking up with him as if your relationship was a strategic alliance. It's also the clearest contrast from his pre-ritual dialogue of "we're a team. If I become all powerful, then we become all powerful" because he's taken away all power from the player. The Ascendant romance is not subtle with most of the romance specific dialogue being themed around an extremely toxic D/s relationship where the Narrator explicitly says heāll see you as degrading himself by being with him as a spawn which feels like it was added to remove any ambiguity about what Astarion feels.Ā From the way he says āon your kneesā before he turns the player character, the way he calls you ābad boy/girlā if you fail the check to see his thoughts, and that infamous line about sitting naked on his lap.
Between the heavy message of power corrupts and how the rest of his ending dialogue is about how his evil future plans will be so fun, it's a clear callback to an act 1 conversation:
tldr: I don't think that corruption is as fun or as freeing as you thought Astarion, but he doesn't have to confront that fact if you're "lovers forever, until the world falls down"
Hey guys, you know about the Same Energy website right? has someone made a post about that? Cuz otherwise im gonna sing its praises to high heaven for its artistic references
Okay so I'm just gonna talk about it even if someone's already made a post, someone's gotta spread the word of this incredible website
So you go to the main page, and you like the vibes of one of these pictures
Lets click skull face lady.
It then gives you BUNCHES of images with similar vibes. Want to tweak it a little and narrow it down further? What if you like the vibe of thatt purple one more? Well u click that one and TADA
And you can just keep narrowing down from there, and if you make an account you can even save images you like :D
I know it sounds like i'm advertising for them but honestly i would GLADLY take money to advertise for these guys, their website is still only in beta mode but already I use this (or try to) for my art warmups because I get to try to do something a little different each time. (I would give money to support them but I am broke AF so that's why I'm just spreading the word instead ;A; )
And on the front page there's even an option to search with your own images I think! (Though, I tried to do that but I kept getting an Error, so I don't know if that's a Me With Bad Internet issue or a Website issue. Again, website is in beta, so if it is a problem on their end it will hopefully be fixed soon).
and i just love this website cuz its GREAT for collecting asthetics and vibes (i mean, hence the name "same energy")
It's like Pinterest on crack :0
So yeah :D Definitely go check out Same Energy, it is a GREAT resource for artists and those trying to collect specific vibes.
Sharing here bc helpful resource, but also to add on a few notes.
This is a search engine! Long pressing images on mobile will bring up where the engine found the image (not sure how to pull this up on desktop). It is no different from the images section of Google or Duck Duck Go or w/e else you use in this regard.
I specify this bc pintrest is a hellscape of stolen works :,) it's entire foundation is based on ppl finding aesthetic photos and art and uploading them to the site with no credit or permission. This isn't like that. It is a search engine.
Sometimes what it finds may be reuploads, which sucks, but it's not based in trying to do that. So if you like a photo you see, check out the source. If it seems ligit, consider helping the artist by leaving a tip or doing whatever pleases that site's algorithm.
literally most things that people write off as justĀ ātexturesā to use in graphics are stolen & unsourced material created by artists or photographers NOT meant to be used as elements in projects without royalty payments. you can sayĀ āitās just random tumblr posts they donāt careā but you wouldnāt want someone to take your work and edit into their work so they can be praised for their beautiful style and creativity even if they just post it on social media w/o profit, would you?? so maybe if you browse pinterest or google images for pictures without finding the original source, youāre using images that youāre not allowed to use without realizing it.
you see it on here a lot especially in (i wonāt link anything but iām sure you know what i mean) those album trackĀ āaestheticsā posts, auĀ āaestheticā posts (you see these less in kpop, but where people use non-royalty free images to kinda craft a visual au), and even just rather typical graphics that have a lot ofĀ ātextureā elements. and texture packs too!! thatās often where the problem starts; people just collect images (often literal art), compile them in a folder w/o sources, then insist no one can repost those images w/o crediting the person who compiled them. what???
SO may i suggest some of my fave places you can get FREE, ROYALTY-FREE elements that are totally legal to use
creativemarket has 6 free high-quality resources (textures, brushes, fonts, etc), different every week! wow awesome i check it every week
searchĀ āfreebieā on behance. awesome stuff!!! lots of v nice templates textures and fonts
mockup zone freebies
unsplash: tons of very nice free photographs, not shitty stock photos
pexels: same idea. + they have an adobe plugin so you can get photos without closing your editor damn nice
pixelsquid is a super cool free program (again w a ps plugin that i love) with lottts of super cool hq 3d elements!
as to not make this too long: spoongraphics, lostandtakenĀ (textures galore), pixeden, freebiesbug.
Hey guys! Iām a sort of designer enthusiast/hobbyist and I do my fair share of freelancing, so overtime Iāve accumulated a list as well which I would love to share with you.
Freepik has anything from textures to layered psds, icons and so much more that is actually free to use.
Unsplash is a community of photographers which provides daily content that you can use! You donāt have to credit them but you should. Theyāre amazing.
Icons8 is basically a library of icons and icon sets, they have a little over 60,000 icons for you to choose from.
The Pattern Library is a very generous project of Julien Renvoye, heās basically created a library of amazing seamless patterns/textures you can use.

This is absolutely fascinating. I've now been looking at Alex Colville's paintings and trying to work out what it is about them that makes them look like CGI and how/why he did that in a world where CGI didn't exist yet. Here's what I've got so far:
- Total lack of atmospheric perspective (things don't fade into the distance)
- Very realistic shading but no or only very faint shadows cast by ambient light.
- Limited interaction between objects and environment (shadows, ripples etc)
- Flat textures and consistent lighting used for backgrounds that would usually show a lot of variation in lighting, colour and texture
- Bodies apparently modelled piece by piece rather than drawn from life, and in a very stiff way so that the bodies show the pose but don't communicate the body language that would usually go with it. They look like dolls.
- Odd composition that cuts off parts that would usually be considered important (like the person's head in the snowy driving scene)
- Very precise drawing of structures and perspective combined with all the simplistic elements I've already listed. In other words, details in the "wrong" places.
What's fascinating about this is that in early or bad CGI, these things come from the fact that the machine is modelling very precisely the shapes and perspectives and colours, but missing out on some parts that are difficult to render (shadows, atmospheric perspective) and being completely unable to pose bodies in such a way as to convey emotion or body language.
But Colville wasn't a computer, so he did these same things *on purpose*. For some reason he was *aiming* for that precise-but-all-wrong look. I mean, mission accomplished! The question in my mind is, did he do this because he was trying to make the pictures unsettling and alienating, or because in some way, this was how he actually saw the world?
i hate that every time i look for color studies and tips to improve my art and make it more dynamic and interesting all that comes up are rudimentary explanations of the color wheel that explain it to me like im in 1st grade and just now discovering my primary colors
āred and green are opposites š„°ā cool now how do i paint a tree with pinks and blues without it looking like a childās finger painting or incongruous blobs of rainbow vomit
ok i canāt explain it very well but im looking for tips and techniques for rendering art like
with specifically the highlights and colors being hues that compliment each other, donāt distract from the scene, and make it more interesting/visually appealing
gonna drop some sources I have saved on Pinterest! I don't know if these all link back to the original sources so apologies for that
cohesive but still contrasting
This kind of talks about color and composition
This is a bit about landscape specifically
Values & composition
Contrast in composition
Balance in colors & values
This one's more for palette building but I think it's useful and can be applied to the other ones
Cohesion within compositions/lighting
"Chromatic fringe" - I also see people using this with shading, they bring in a transition color that is a different hue than the base color or shadow, it makes it so that less vibrancy is lost and it doesn't get muddy!
This one specifically has a lot of process behind the style of painting you're looking for!
Also one of my favorite artists who makes bright and colorful art like this is Not Sorry Art on TikTok & YouTube, her website is here and it's<3 my fav. She has some videos where you can see her process
With the oranges painting you put as an example, I noticed they painted the lighter values more toward yellow - they also exaggerated the hues of the undertones of the photo, so I'm guessing they either did it in their head or bumped the saturation up to get a closer look! I really love these paintings you shared and I definitely share your desire to paint/draw like that :)
ALSO!!! I can HIGHLY recommend checking out Marco Bucci's YouTube channel. Picking out diverse colors with a realistic painterly style is something that he excels at. His videos are also incredible references for how to paint (esp. digitally) in general.
For what this post is asking for, I would recommend checking out his Travel Sketching and Sketchbook Painting videos, specifically.
Here's a piece he did for Disney's 2018 Nutcracker film:
