How to Make Your Art Look Nice: Thumbnailing
Itâs here! For those artists who spend loads of time trying to figure out why their art is not coming out the way they want it to be, making thumbnails (or making studies) is the thing for you! Itâs also great of getting rid of the habit of zooming in.
________
Mindsets | Reference and Style | Color Harmony | Contrast
I do this and it helps a BUTTLOAD
I found a small but thick scratchpad at a convenience store that was super cheap and has +100 pages in, all of which can easily be torn out. I often take a pen to those and scribble thumbnails of varying sizes before I start a drawing
Definitely give this method a shot sometime! It changes a lot (and even helps stir up ideas for later!)
âDonât traceâ originally started as a warning against tracing as art theft (as in, tracing someone elseâs art without permission or credit is art theft) and then over the intervening years turned into âyou canât use references because itâs cheatingâ and I think thatâs one of the worst cases of the telephone game Iâve ever personally experienced
you are allowed to trace as practice
you are allowed to trace your own work (for example photographs you took yourself or to keep architectural consistency)
you are allowed to trace things the original artist is encouraging you to trace
you SHOULD use references
you SHOULD be allowed to pick up other artistsâ artistic tics you like (âŚas long as theyâre not offensive, like blackfacing, but thatâs a different kettle of fish)
you SHOULDNâT go around moralizing at other people about how they learn best because you can and will lose friends that way and you can and will hurt other artistsâ development that way.
Also other than art theft there IS no such thing as cheating in art okay use sparkle pens and fan brushes to your heartâs content why is that even a thing I have to say (âŚand yes Iâve had conversations in the analog world about fan brushes as âcheatingâ Iâm so tired of snotty artists who think you shouldnât be allowed to use tools that make things easier because they can do it the hard way)
But honestly, this need to be said louder, as an artist you end up feeling like you aint getting better, trying to draw in perspective without having a guide line . And when others shame artist for using references its like they are expecting the artist to know by memory how everything works on every perspective.
To Consider that fan brushes, or custom brushes are cheating and expecting the artist to do everything in the âoriginalâ way is like wanting the cashier to charge you without using a calculator to do the sum. Tools are invented to be used.
âtools are invented to be usedâ well put
Not allowing using references is same as telling to a chef they canât use recipes but they have to pull any dish in the world out of their asses just like that. The first thing, the very first thing my photography teacher told us was âWhen photographing was invented, ARTISTS took pictures of cities and traced them on their paintings because hey - easier work! Why bother to work hard when you can make it easy for yourself and save your time and energy?â
Iâve been drawing for years, and I still trace. It helps me learn relationships between shapes, and to understand perspectives that are difficult. Other days, I eyeball it until it looks right. 90% of what I have on my computer is reference images.Â
Thing is, use what makes you learn best. Donât steal, but donât suffer because someone says references arenât getting. Â
Lots of this.
I work in animation. My boss encourages the whole team, every day, to learn how to draw the characters by tracing them over and over, before trying to draw them freehand. It helps commit their shapes and proportions to muscle memory and actual memory.
Tracing is an invaluable method of learning. As long as you arenât tracing somebody elseâs work and calling it your own, youâre in the clear. TRACE YOUR LITTLE HEART OUT.

Ice Slime Diet: Fruit and Meat Plort: Ice Plort Favorite Food: Frozen Fig Default Value: 55 Slime Type: Harmful Largo-able: Yes Special Behavior or Properties: -Occasionally freezes the surrounding area with ice, making the ground slippery and causing plorts, slimes, ranchers etc. to slide around wherever the ice has covered. -If the rancher stays in an area covered with ice for too long they will gradually start to take damage from frostbite. -Creates more ice when agitated. Slimeology: Ice slimes are found in the chilliest regions of the Far, Far Range. Constantly freezing all that surround them, they require high energy foods such as meat and fruit. Contrary to their icy nature, these slimes are quite friendly and enjoy following ranchers who, much to their chagrin, are often eager to get away from these frosty fellows. Rancher Risks: An ice slime itself is not harmful, but the sheets of ice it creates can be at best, a nuisance, and at worst, dangerous. If a rancher stands on an ice for too long they will start to develop a harmful case of frostbite. It is advised to avoid standing on sheets of ice for long periods of time, however a rancher can warm up faster in the presence of a fire slime. Plortonomics: Ice plorts are a valuable resource, as they are often used in cooling units that are involved in everything from kitchen appliances to machinery. They are often used in exotic drinks selling at an exorbitant price, when people feel like being fancy. (My fanslime! I LOVE this game!) @monomipark

just so yall know
art block is your brain telling you to do studies.
draw a still life. practice some poses. sketch some naked people. do a color study. try out a different technique on a basic shape.
art block doesnt stop you from drawing, it stops you from making your drawings look the way you want them to. and thats because you need to push your skills to the next level so you can preform at that standard
think of it as level grinding for your next work.
As a scientific illustrator- this is 100% true and going to review your basics will fix it every goddamn time. Not only does it keep your skills sharp, when youâre not emotionally invested in the final product of a piece, you relax and your brain makes more/better art juice for you. So, when you get back to that big/important piece? Youâll know what to do and how to do it.
