Lately I've been saying that it requires like, towns full of poor people to free up enough cash for a billionaire to get theirs. It is a little more nuanced than that, I admit, but if you've got a finite system with a billion dollars and a thousand people, the only way one of them gets to a billion is if nobody else has any. And one way or another there is a finite amount of money in the world.
For every Billionaire Healthcare CEO, there must be thousands of patients in medical debt. For every Billionaire Box Store Owner, you need thousands of employees on food stamps. Hell, to get a trillion dollars, you need a thousand would-be billionaires to have nothing.
The fact that it's more complex than that works in their favor, because it's impossible to blame Bezos and the Waltons for the Sacklers' failings. Realistically, you're not poor directly because Elon Musk is rich. But I think we need to start framing it that way because the alternative seems to be, well, Conservative Austerity.
People will keep dying because they can't afford their medications for as long as we continue to allow billionaires to hoard their wealth. Because we're literally starving people (through gutting food stamps) to pay for billionaires (through tax breaks, subsidies, and the stock market).
Those policies get to play at being humane because we don't acknowledge the human costs that come with them. We allow Republicans to pretend that their policies are just politics, and not life or death.
