if u time travel kidnapped a medieval peasant's baby and brought it to now it wouldn't be particularly surprised by anything bc babies adapt quickly to most new situations and if u kept them here probably nothing especially terrible would happen, but they would likely grow up with a quiet yet unshakable feeling that they were somehow subtly different from everyone else around them in a way that felt impossible to locate (other people smell weird, i dont know,) but was significant and steadfast enough to cultivate over time a visible wedge between themselves & the rest of the world, (every night i dream of places that look nothing like this, people speaking a language i cant understand in a rhythm that feels like home,) and you would have no idea what to do that could possibly make it better. after their first attempt you would visit them in the hospital, you would be holding them and decide you had to tell them the truth and they would look at you in utter disbelief, bewilderment that morphed slowly into agonized recognition and they would start crying, soft at first then big, gasping heaves as it sunk in that this was the first thing that had ever really made sense, that it had to be true if only because nothing else had been so far, and after the sobbing settled and after a gaping terrible silence they would barely be able to look at you and ask why....would you do this to me? and of course all of this provided there was some way to prevent them from dying of every disease as soon as they got to the future (theirs)/present (yours)/past (mine (i had created this in my mind))
