“Teachers are often unaware of the gender distribution of talk in their classrooms. They usually consider that they give equal amounts of attention to girls and boys, and it is only when they make a tape recording that they realize that boys are dominating the interactions. Dale Spender, an Australian feminist who has been a strong advocate of female rights in this area, noted that teachers who tried to restore the balance by deliberately ‘favouring’ the girls were astounded to find that despite their efforts they continued to devote more time to the boys in their classrooms. Another study reported that a male science teacher who managed to create an atmosphere in which girls and boys contributed more equally to discussion felt that he was devoting 90 per cent of his attention to the girls. And so did his male pupils. They complained vociferously that the girls were getting too much talking time. In other public contexts, too, such as seminars and debates, when women and men are deliberately given an equal amount of the highly valued talking time, there is often a perception that they are getting more than their fair share. Dale Spender explains this as follows: “The talkativeness of women has been gauged in comparison not with men but with silence. Women have not been judged on the grounds of whether they talk more than men, but of whether they talk more than silent women.” In other words, if women talk at all, this may be perceived as ‘too much’ by men who expect them to provide a silent, decorative background in many social contexts.”

Every EVERY women’s studies class I’ve been in has had this problem and failed to address it.

The double standard is glaring, but let's not pretend that the new Israeli law is in any way a good one.
Yeah, one of the things that I find most frustrating about talking about anything to do with Israel is that it’s a democracy index 7.80 country that is consistently brought up in the same breath as a group of countries which pretty much all fall in 1-3.5 range (leaving aside Afghanistan as an outlier, because last I checked it had fallen all the way to 0.25 and it’s almost as unfair to compare that to Jordan as it is to compare Jordan to Israel).
Like. Israel is a concerningly flawed democracy at real risk of serious backsliding! It’s very bad! This law is very bad, the rhetoric coming out of the current majority coalition is very bad, the enduring popularity of people who built their political careers cheering on the Israeli equivalent of the JFK assassination is very bad.
But every time you try and talk about any of that, you have to contend with an avalanche of propaganda that posits that this means that Israel is somehow a more repressive regime than its neighbors, and like… I’m sorry, but that’s just completely detached from reality?
Like just as a point of comparison, Ukraine is only a 4.90 on the democracy index, and that’s not great. But only the most diehard self-parody tankies ever bring Ukrainian domestic policy and law up in the context of whether the war in Ukraine is justified, because given that Russia is a whooping 2.03 on the democracy index and has earned every bit of that rating, “some of the political purges in Ukraine are a bit concerning for long-term domestic governance” a fucking absurd thing to go after Ukraine for in the context of Russian hostility.
Anyway holy shit is this Israeli death penalty law awful, and it should be condemned, and I fucking wish I didn’t always have to disclaimer saying that with “but to be clear, this doesn’t mean that Egypt and Lebanon and the PA have any moral high ground, obviously, I mean come the fuck on”
I am whatever the opposite of a speed runner is. I am a game meanderer. I have to look at literally everything. I am overly cautious in every way. I forget to pause and wander away from the game. I take a minimum 7 hours to get through any given level. If you give me a timer I will cry.
Currently reading Jerusalem: A Biography by Simon Sebag Montefiore. Excellent book, btw, I highly recommend it.
Once again I am bowled over by the widely accepted narrative that Jews are colonisers and Israel has no historical right to the land in the Levant and the Arab Muslims are, in fact, the indigenous people, when even the slightest understanding of history on the most elemental, basic level shows that narrative as patently ludicrous.
I can only conclude that people pushing this narrative either has a problem with decolonisation and land back as a concept, or with Jews, specifically.
Don't forget that a lot of it is being deliberately and maliciously pushed by Pan-Arabist interests; their failure to keep the Jews as dhimmis was a massive blow to their collective pride and ego. It's their equivalent of the American South's "Lost Cause".
So you're supportive of an ethnostate apartheid? Interesting.
What makes you think they support Iraq? or sorry were you referring to Egypt? or Azerbaijan? Syria? Pakistan? sorry it's hard to keep track of all the states that restrict people's rights based off ethnicity or religion.
I assume you MUST be referring to one of those. otherwise it would be WILDLY tone-deaf, embarrassing, and frankly pretty racist to read,

and then immediately decide to pull one of these?

Europeans who are actively benefitting from the stolen property of Jews, turning around and calling Israel illegitimate and irredeemably evil for "stealing land" sure are something to behold
This is how I know antizionism is about persecuting Jews, btw. Because if it wasn't, you would see antizionists hounding European countries to return all of the property and wealth they stole from Holocaust survivors as passionately as they harass random diaspora Jews
about to say something mean but i feel like every "male-specific" issue is something that also happens to women its just that a lot of you dont seem to see women as people
women are also feeling lonely and alienated from communities en masse women are also expected to stifle their mental health for the sake of perfomance at work, in relationships, for children ect women are also expected to work extremely hard to maintain a perfect body and perfect health and are punished for being fat/having hair loss/having health issues especially those that affect ones sex life women are also insecure women are also neglected by parents and teachers and authority figures women are also scrutinized for having emotions and punished for not meeting the gendered expectations of our class and expected to climb upwards and overcompensate while being punished for signs of poverty and we get the added bonus on top of, yknow, being women. your emotional issues are not a Crisis Attacking Manhood theyre the way our society is fucking built you just dont see women as people

I was talking to my mom about John Green today and I mentioned that “he’s still on tumblr” and she asked why that would be weird and I said that no one is on tumblr these days, “except him and I guess me”
So
I don’t know what all of you guys are doing here, because clearly this website is occupied only by me and John Green
just the two of us / we can make it if we try.

Anti-city people are just plain fascinating to me
They can't fathom strange things like sidewalks and dedication pedestrian crossing and why a kid would be perfectly fine walking 5m and crossing a street
what you learn from hobbies:
consistent practice opens up whole worlds of skill that you couldn't imagine
making mistakes in the process of learning is not only natural, it is also essential
activities that you enjoy can give you more energy back than you spent on them
wow everything is so expensive
my hands hurt
I know this is a tiny part of the wider problems born of diet culture, fatphobia, classicism, and racism but like god the idea that "healthy" food must inherently taste bad has completely ruined us as a society.
Every time you feel bad for having coffee with cream and sugar or ranch on your salad or putting extra butter and salt on your veggies I want you to imagine the spirit of John Harvey Kellogg in front of you and then I want you to kill him with a real gun and eat your delicious food in peace.

At a time where jewish groups are being banned from pride events, you do not get to use Anne Franke, a dead jew murdered for being jewish before she could ever come out, as a puppet for whatever queer rights message you want to share.
You do not get to profit, financially or attention wise or another way, off of a *potentially* queer jew whilst we are banned from pride events.
We do not know if she was questioning her sexuality but ultimately straight or if she was actually queer because she was killed for the crime of existing as a jew before she could come out. Queer rights obviously matter. Anne Franke is not the person you should be using.
You need to protect alive queer jews. You need to love all jews, not just the dead ones.
I've had to delete multiple comments missing the point of the post
"But they banned zionists not jews", they banned jewish organizations, who refused to say they disavowed israel. That's like asking a local Chinese diaspora group to disavow the CCP or they can't be at pride.
The reason why its antisemitic is because its treating jewish organizations as guilty until proven innocent. Its treating jewish organizations as somehow being responsible for a foreign government's actions. Jewish organizations have to say again and again that they do not support the Israeli government to be allowed to exist in public. Its an extra step that non jewish organizations do not face. That's the antisemitism of it all. No other group was forced to disavow israel to attend pride.
It’s not just like asking the local Chinese diaspora group to disavow the CCP, it’s like asking them to disavow China as a whole. To agree that every single person in China is inherently evil, from the tiniest newborn to the oldest grandparent, that any attack against any person in China didn’t actually happen, and if it did it wasn’t that bad, and if it was then they deserved it. It’s like expecting them to do this while all over the world Chinese people are being attacked, whether or not they actually ever lived in China, and while within living memory every country turned away Chinese people who were fleeing systemic murder, and China is the only country that exists explicitly to protect Chinese people
Put in the tags the completely finished (whether cancelled or wrapped up on its own terms) TV series that has YOUR perfect ending, however you define that
Please don’t include huge spoilers for the specifics of the endings, and it would also make me happy if people don’t use this to talk about the shows whose endings they hated
