Actually, no, I don't think that friendships dropping like flies in your late 20s and early 30s because no one has time for that between overwork and family obligations and marriage and kids and partners and the ritual of the time slayer is normal and ok. No I don't think deep conversations and spontaneous adventures being replaced with a tired coffee every six months is a normal part of growing up. I don't think that emotional intimacy and soul bonds disintegrating in the face of practical inconvenience is a fact of life. I think that means something is deeply deeply wrong with our society and I will never forgive it for the friends I've lost

You know what I don’t see enough of in fantasy fiction (or, like, at all)? Milk kinship. Honestly all sorts of fictive kinship (godparents, ect), because I am sure that especially with magic in the world, there is so much that you could do with things like that, but I feel like milk kinship specifically would be interesting

Today’s curious wonderings: where on earth did the idea/name/term Tommy Atkins come from?

Because when you look it up, people will tell you that it was the generic name used in army paperwork in the 19th century, which is true, yes, but the first recorded use of the term is in fact in the mid 18th century, and the context it is used in (paraphrasing here, but it’s a line in a letter about I think a mutiny that then adds “but the Yanks and Tommies behaved splendidly”) implies that it was already a colloquial term for British soldiers, so either it appeared in paperwork way earlier (which is itself kind of odd, because then was there a reason or was it just a random name that someone made up) or that it was used in the paperwork because it was already a coloquial term
