I don't think I'm otherkin but ever since I was a child I have always known I was meant to have a tail (and claws). I was very upset I didn't have it, and I'd tie a string around my waist so it would dangle around when I moved. Almost 20 years later I can still hear it thump when I'm happy or I can feel it wrap around my leg when I'm anxious. I don't have claws anymore. I have never told anyone this but I'm still glad to know that someone else out there knows what it means to ache so deeply for something you're supposed to have but just don't. I'm not alone

I’m happy to know that I have brought you some comfort. You are not alone. If it helps you then wear a tail, wear long nails, wear fangs, wear ears. You do not have to identify as a therian to do things that will make you happy and comfortable.
Hi! I'm new to the therian community. I was awakened in early childhood but I only learned about the community this past year.
I was wondering some things about being a werewolf/shapeshifter as I feel it may apply to me.
How did you come to terms with/understand being a werewolf?
What does being a werewolf mean to you?
How does being a werewolf feel to you?
I've had times where I thought I became an animal, obvs I did not really, but mentally and spiritually I felt a strong shift. And in my deluded state felt as though I was an animal (I also have mental illnesses that likely play a part in this)
Outside of that I also feel as though my spirit/mental state itself shifts between humanoid to animal and in between states just in general with multiple theriotypes.
I'm having trouble defining my experience or even where I fit in this community. Just looking for some extra perspective.

It’s hard to explain for me, it was partially a therian thing, I grew up in an alternate community that was very foresty and accepting of a lot of beliefs, so I grew up able to fully explore my identity, and came to the conclusion that I am a wolf, on a few levels. It is also partially a religious thing, through rituals and such which I will not be detailing as they are very personal to me, if you wish to know more you can research shapeshifters. There is also another separate aspect to my werewolf identity I will not be specifying on my blog. Apologies, I am not comfortable with being much more specific than that!
I am a wolf on some levels, I am a human on other levels, sometimes I am both on certain levels as well. I am a werewolf.
It is a spiritual experience a lot of the time, the full moon is an entire night I spend dedicated to the moon and the gods I follow, and it is also a night I spend as a wolf. It is also sometimes just a simple shifting experience, feeling more as if I have a tail, wolf ears, paws, bigger teeth, etc. or being more in a wolfish mindset than a human one. Sometimes it is a fight between my wolfish and humanish sides.
In the way you are describing your experience, it sounds not unlike a normal shifting experience, but if you feel as if you are struggling with delusions you very much should talk to a therapist about it, as they can provide you valuable coping mechanisms and advice.
Honestly, it sounds as if you really should research shapeshifters, especially pagan shapeshifters specifically. You may find valuable connection and insight there that I cannot easily give you while feeling comfortable with the amount I am sharing about my experiences. Feel free to come back anytime!
what are some good safe things to do as a large-size otherkin / monster kin? i get paw shifts and lots of wiggly tails and stuff

Hello! Apologies for the long wait, I needed a bit of a break after a few life and world events.
Here’s some ideas that may be fun:
Build a little town or forest out of cans and boxes and such for your plushies to live in, then you can either go hunting in the forest that is very small to your large monster self, or maybe destroy the city like a kaiju, or even just existing nearby somewhere that feels sized properly to you could feel nice.
I will forever recommend making a little den/nest out of whatever you find comfortable! Nothing beats it, maybe go ‘hunting’ and bring your hunt back to your den and relax there, watch a movie that speaks to your therian/monster side!
chewelry is amazing for anyone with any teeth shifts! There are many shapes of them out there, I even one that looks like a little animal for my more hunting moods.
for paw shifts I have always found photography and posing with your paws in paw-like ways to be very comfortable and helpful for me. that and then my fursuit paws, maybe i’ll show those off sometime soon, I feel they’d be a hit with their more animalistic shape than most paws haha!
for tail shifts: I have 3 tails, my fox tail that a buddy of mine taxidermied and traded to me for some bones, a yarn tail I made, and then my fursuit tail, which is a different species and shape than me and my tail, but the wags are unmatched. I definitely recommend all of these options, find a good reputable seller for anything coming from an actual animal, yarn tails are a good thing to keep you busy as well as being really nice if you truly take the time to brush each weft out fully, and fursuit tails are easier to make and super versatile in shape, look, etc.
exploring and finding high grounds to survey the area from is great for feeling big, and it can be calming to be able to see everything. sitting for a while, usually 2-3 hours watching nature is one of my favorite activities, and you can even see some interesting animals if you are quiet and calm. just be very careful in your exploration, make sure someone knows where you are and keep a good eye out for dangers, if you’re going into the forest bring a bear bell or similar.
crunchy foods like rock candy can feel sort of like bones, if that’s something you enjoy feeling in your teeth.

This post is pretty old, but is a good guide on thinking intuitively about your kintype, and what exactly you may be. If you need any help with intuition and developing it, This post does an excellent job explaining the general concepts and some exercises.
I know this is a bit of a later reply, but I do hope it helps! If you need anything else feel free to send in another ask! Specifics help but are not required when sending in anything.
This is a guide to therian and therian-adjacent terms, alongside some alternatives that people may be if they are questioning therianthropy! I will also include some potential terms that people may prefer that could fall under the umbrella of other terms. This will be an ever updating blogpost!
* These are all definitions made in my words by me, they may not be perfect, and I encourage others to both add to and correct parts of this, I WILL INCORPORATE COMMUNITY EDITS!
Basic terminology
Alterhuman
An umbrella term for anyone who identifies in a nonhuman or alternatively human way. This can mean identifying as anything from a pig to a dragon to a jewelweed to Aragorn and beyond.
Nonhuman
An umbrella term not dissimilar to alterhuman, but will generally not include things such as human fictional characters, though some include them as well when speaking casually. Basically a slightly more specific version of alterhuman.
Otherkin
Another similar umbrella term. This means someone who identifies as a nonhuman or fictional human being. Some non/alterhumans do not prefer this term due to the specifics of how they identify.
Alternatives:
𓆱 Otherhearted/kith: a term meaning someone who closely relates to/loves a certain creature, but does not identify as one.
Therian/Therianthrope/Therianthropy
An otherkin/nonhuman that identifies as an earth-based animal, whether alive or extinct. Some who identify as fictional animals still consider themselves to be therians, which should be respected. (Therianthropy specifically means the state of being a therian)
Fictionkin
An otherkin/alterhuman that identifies as a fictional character, whether human or not.
Alternatives:
𓆱 Copinglink: a term meaning someone who identifies as a fictional character to cope with stress, trauma, etc. This identity is a voluntary identity.
𓆱 Delusional attachment: An attachment to a fictional character people who experience delusions may form in which they believe they are that character. (If you believe you may experience this, please speak to a licensed professional about it!)
Plantkin
A nonhuman/otherkin that identifies as a plant.
Kintype/Theriotype
A word for what specifically a alterhuman/nonhuman identifies as, kintype being more general and theriotype being specific to therians. (ex: “I have an elf kintype and a red fox theriotype!”)
Factkin
Heavily debated within alterhuman spaces, this term refers to those whose kintypes are real people from our universe and earth, whether currently alive or not.
__kin
A way of categorizing kintypes, for example “caninekin” means those who identify as canines, though it can be even more specific, such as “werewolfkin” being for who identify as werewolves specifically.
Kinshift/shift
An experience in which an alterhuman mentally ‘shifts’ to think/act more like their kintype.
Kinsidering
a play-on-words style term that means you are considering a kintype ex: “I’m kinsidering Twilight Sparkle” “I’m kinsidering a grey fox”
Phantom Limbs
The feeling of limbs that aren’t really there. Also commonly used by amputees about limbs they no longer possess. For alterhumans these limbs are generally limbs their kintype has but their body does not. ex: tails, wings, ears

Yes I do, I have a tail, and though these are more for modeling, occasionally I will wear press on nails for a more claw-like feeling! Also originally bought for a Halloween-style shoot I have some fake fangs as well.

Packs take many forms, but tend to be built off the idea of a group of nonhumans/otherkin/therians that work as a close friend/familial group, sometimes with a form of hierarchy or specific roles, sometimes without.
Packs are NOT a requirement, and will work great for some groups and some beings, but not for others.
I personally do not recommend seeking out a pack online just for the purpose of creating a pack. It’s best to just have fun, make friends, live life, and at some point you may end up finding a pack that’s right for you. Think of pack as your found family (or your actual family!) it’s a little odd to create a group with the express purpose of wanting a few new siblings, though it’s not entirely unheard of to try.
Packs tend to be a hodgepodge of different creatures, as nonhumans/otherkin tend to differ from one to another hugely! Though there are specific packs out there that control what types of creatures are allowed in.
One thing to keep an eye on is hierarchical packs, which very much can work well, but when there is a “top dog” so to speak, they can easily attempt to shrug off responsibility and take advantage of those lower in the ranks. Take care of yourself and your pack. If you feel things aren’t stable, it’s okay to leave instead of being stuck in a situation that just doesn’t work for you.
Sometimes pack can be human, as well. Though they may not fully understand our circumstances they can be amazing and valued members of a pack.
Everyone thinks of pack differently in some way. Pack can even be people who don’t know of your otherkin/alterhuman/nonhuman status. Pack can be friends, family, partners, humans, nonhumans, pets, etc. Depending on how you define your pack. It does not have to be flashy and formal to be important to you. Be kind to yourself, find your family in those you love and trust, and, as always:

I have recently seen a few posts hating on those who spiritually connect to their kintypes/theriotypes/etc. Addressing this felt important.
We are meant to be an inclusive community. Do not allow a false sense of superiority allow you to feel as if you are above people in the same community as you. Everyone here is hated on by outside people enough, we have to stick together and stop trying to tear our community apart. It is only achieving infighting and spreading our community far too thin.
Physical therians/otherkin/nonhumans are valid and belong here. Spiritual therians/otherkin/nonhumans are valid and belong here. Those who identify in all sorts of ways belong here and are valid.
Stop distancing yourself from the only ones that will truly have your back.
Hello! I wanted to ask for advice for some fictionkin stuff? I tend to have a lot of negative feelings when I'm in a certain kinshift, and my kinshifts lasts for days.
Examples of this is one of my kins have a sorta mix feelings about what I did, and the mix feelings and anger and confusion all just makes me wanna throw things, cry, and all of the above. I'm not gonna ask for help for everything, but some tips to just help ease the anger and feelings a bit will be amazing! If you don't want to for any reason, that's alright too!
So sorry this took me a while to get to! I had to really think about this one! This is a LONG one so i’m going to put it under the cut!
I have been in a similar circumstance before. Rather than anger, though, it came out as melancholy and some level of self-hatred. I will be operating my advice based on this experience.
It took a while for me to adjust to these feelings, but eventually I came to a realization. I am here now, in this body, this mind, and I am living this life. I am not living that life. Whether you view that life as real or not, it is no longer the present. Constantly focusing on the past and every little action you took will drive you crazy. It’s like being unable to think of anything but your most embarrassing moments late at night, those thoughts do not serve you and do not help you.
So, what can you do about this?
It depends from person to person, but I will try to include some tips or exercises, overthinking is tough, but you can manage it, and eventually with less of the overthinking clouding your judgement, you can learn to forgive yourself, or at the very least find some sense of peace and acceptance. The past is in the past, you can not go back and fix it, but you can learn from those experiences and move forward as an improved person.
Try journaling (I know, everyone says to journal all the time, but it doesn’t have to be overcomplicated!). Whenever these thoughts start to come up, pause, bring out a note or a physical journal, whatever works for you, and write down the thought, then how you are responding to said thought. What is it making you feel? And how are you expressing those feelings outwardly? Why do you think you feel that way? Looking back on this later can help you rethink the moment and gain a new perspective on your emotions.
Try taking a step back and thinking bigger picture. How will this memory/thought affect you in a year? Two years? Five years? What is this doing to help you or those you may have wronged? Tormenting yourself does nothing to help you, forgive yourself, and learn to live with compassion.
If you are very bothered and want to make up for your actions in some sense, try volunteering. It can make a big impact and also help settle your mind. Even small actions can hugely help the world and your community.
Take time to acknowledge the good things you did/do. Don’t focus only on negatives, it will send you straight into a downward spiral.
Try to practice kind selfishness once a day, this is something i think everyone should do! Think… if you get someone a gift, or hold a door for someone, they get a little point of happiness from your kind gesture. For you, not only do you get the happiness of seeing them a little happier than before, you also get the satisfaction of doing a good deed, so two happiness points for you! Sure, you’re being a little selfish by getting yourself two whole happiness points, but you’re spreading kindness at the same time, making the world just a little kinder each day.
Ground yourself to the moment. You are here and now, bring yourself back to the present moment.
Guided meditations can be very helpful. A personal favorite of mine is “Tracks To Relax” They have some really calming meditations, many are for sleep but can very much be used for simple calming. Here’s a personal favorite episode of mine: Link

Could you give me some tips on when I have hallucinations (related to my kintype, I'm not asking you to solve all my problems)? For example, sometimes I feel like I'm drying out no matter how much water I drink, and I'm only able to stop it by submerging myself in water. I do not personally experience hallucinations, but I will do my best to give you some potential fixes/alleviators.
- If you have the time and space, taking a shower or bath is not a bad thing to do. In fact you can double it with some self care and make a nice relaxing day out of it.
- Moisturizer maybe? Hand cream, body lotion, lip oils or conditioner, etc? Could work and feel somewhat like a mucus membrane that will protect you while you’re away from the water.
- Sprinklers or water parks during the summer may be a treat
- Wrap some ice or an ice pack in a towel, it will slowly melt and dampen your skin. A good portable one for hot days.
- There are water bottles out there that have a spraying function where they spritz water onto you if that sounds appealing.
- Instead of blow drying your hair let it air dry, it may help with this feeling!
I hope these will help, or spark some ideas as to what might help!

As alterhumans, nonhumans, otherkin, therians, plantkin, etc. I feel as if it is not said enough that it is okay to identify as human!
Most of us bodily are human, so there is some level where our humanity dictates our identity. And that is okay! You can act human, identify as human, and also identify as a nonhuman being!
Fictionkin are a huge part of our spaces, and though we focus on our animalisticness a lot, they deserve recognition and respect! Whether human or any other species or non-species. Many though, are human or human adjacent. And that is amazing!
Some nonhumans feel their kintype is the “real them” below the surface. But others feel there is more balance in their physical to nonphysical identities, they are human and also their kintype, this form is just as important as any other.
Maybe they are a werewolf (cough cough) who has a human form as well as a wolf form! (or a were-creature at least)
There are MANY reasons why a nonhuman being may identify as human on one level or another, and this should be more respected and talked about in nonhuman communities! Let’s have widespread acceptance and discussion of all sorts of beings with all sorts of identities! You are loved and respected!
