It was once thought that the Sutton Hoo helmet was made in Scandinavia rather than England. This rare Anglo-Saxon die stamp found by a metal detectorist in Kent has changed that view. Experts believe it was used to create decorative metal foils for high-status military equipment, which would include the Sutton Hoo helmet. The copper alloy die stamp dates from approximately 550-650 AD. Due to its historical significance, it was recently declared treasure. Dr Andrew Richardson, Finds Liaison Officer for Kent County Council and Kent Officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme, said: “This small but remarkable find provides important evidence that helmets like the Sutton Hoo example could have been made in Kent, highlighting the skill and connections of early medieval craftworkers in the county.” What do the figures on the stamp represent? “These figures, sometimes referred to as ‘weapon dancers’, have often been interpreted as being connected to the cult of Odin/Woden.” —Portable Antiquities Scheme Photo is by the British Museum’s Portable Antiquities Scheme

Perrott's Folly was built in 1758 by John Perrott - a wealthy landowner. It is a 29-metre tall red brick tower that has also been known as 'The Observatory' or 'The Monument'. It is Grade II listed & stands on Waterworks Road in Edgbaston.
The reason for it being built is unknown, but it it is speculated that John Perrott wanted it for either entertaining guests, spying on his unfaithful wife or watching over her grave ☠ (info from Birmingham Conservation Trust website).
Remarkably, although in a state of disrepair, the ornate 18th century ceiling is still in place & many original features of the Folly still remain. I can also say there's a lot of steps!
LORD OF THE RINGS
It is not formally recognised but it is widely believed (& to me, quite undeniable) that the Folly, 'along with the Victorian stack of the Edgbaston Waterworks' were the inspiration for local author JRR Tolkien's 'Two Towers' book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
What is it now?
It is currently owned by a charity and occupied /managed by a not for profit organisation called reFuture Collective who are an 'arts & architecture collective whose projects connect communities, cultural practices & buildings of historical value'.
There are fortnightly events for adults & young people who attend on a social prescription basis. (See website).
Can I visit?
Sadly the Folly is not open to the public but it is hoped with restoration & soon to be the new toilet, this may change in future. More creative groups will be invited to use the space & hopefully if the finances it so desperately needs can be found, tours will become possible again.
Help needed ! If you are able to donate either money or services to the upkeep of this important landmark please contact refuturecollective. Live link to PENNIES TO PERROTT'S FOLLY
