He has a love hate relationship with bartending. On the one hand, it's easy to find a place that's running low on hands and will look the other way at a guy requesting temp work. On the other hand, it means the bars are seedy places just as apt to be haunted as the motels he frequents. Sometimes it's not so easy to tell until he's closing up for the night all on his lonesome. Other times, it's right there in his face for a whole shift and he has to ignore it until it disappears. If it disappears.

That's the kind of thing he's dealing with tonight when she walks into the bar. His attention slips, suddenly getting a familiar sensation that makes him roll his neck a little. She doesn't look familiar. He almost hopes she takes a booth, but the bar isn't very crowded. Henry glances away from her and fills another patron's mug. When he looks for the ghost he's been keeping an eye on, he realizes it's gone. It's moved. He doesn't like that. It's going to be a problem for closing time.

At least the blonde isn't a ghost.

"Hi. ...Um, what can I get you?"

Instead of doing NanoWriMo I will be doing something where I try to aim for writing an actual average of 400 words a day for the month of November in memory of Terry Pratchett, who as far as I know never thought telling a computer to write a book for you is a good way to hone your skills as a writer.

I LOVE THIS. THIS is the spirit of NaNoWriMo: to invent a challenge to make you write.

If I may add some ideas:

The 666 challenge: Writing six pages a day in a month (no matter how shitty) because Stephen King writes 6 pages a day. Equating it with the devil is to explain why it's shit sometimes.

The 420 challenge: Get high. Write 420 words a day.

THE OTHER 51 challenge: Write 51 words a day because, yes, Hamilton wrote 51 essays in six months, but that bitch was crazy, and you can write 51 words without feeling like you're running out of time.

The Fibonacci challenge: Try to write as many words a day as required to meet the Fibonacci sequence. So, 100 on day one. 200 on day two. 300 on day three. Etcetera. If you don't hit the number in the sequence, you can respond "DO I LOOK LIKE A MATHIMATICIAN TO YOU"

If you wanna NaNo your heart out at 1667 a day, absolutely do that. Enjoy it! But if start talking now if you're looking for a group who will join you and not try to fuck AI up its server-hole.

I'm adding from my writing discord server, we usually put on a "slow nano" that spans from oct 1st to Nov 30th. It begins at 150 words on Oct 1st and the goal increases by 50 words per day, until October 31st, where you will be at 1650. November 1st is also 1650, and then it begins to wind down by removing 50 words per day. This formula ends up with a little over 50k, spread over 2 months, with a feeling of warming up and cooling down.

We also have several games (they can be played year round and many do) outside of sprinting, though I think the Owe Me Game is the most played. The game begins where everyone playing writes 100 words, and then they get to challenge another player to that player's goal word range (if your range is 200-300, they could pick 236 words or 211 words, if it's 600-900 they could pick 601 or 899 etc). The challenged player then has to write that amount in the next 36 hours, and then they can challenge another person to do the same. It goes back and forth for a set number of days per game (around 10 days I think). It gets a lot done, and helps writing not feel as lonely.

Which is another thing I can recommend- regardless of goal word count, November has for the last 21 years for me been the time when I could easily find groups of writers buckling down together and doing writing in groups and sharing. That's going to be the biggest loss out of this whole situation. So, please, poke writers near you, announce writing group times, make some pickup group chatzy chats or discord or Tumblr communities- whatever you can do to forge communal writing. Set your goals and do your writing, sure. But. November has been writer social month for decades. Don't neglect that part of it, and don't feel bad mourning that part of it as needed.

"Oh? You too, huh?" He says with a curious quirk of his brow, "There's really nothing you miss from your time? No one? Nothing? Not even any conveniences?"

There's tons of things, but he'd miss them back home as much as he would here. This isn't a conversation he wants to get into.

"Nope," Terry says. "Knock it off."

"Guilty as charged." Thad lets out a laugh. Well, Terry had him there. He didn't need a car, which wouldn't make his answer surprising in the least.

"Running, duh." Thad snickers, "And hey! It's not eavesdropping if you're talking aloud to yourself. That's your own fault there." Maybe that was something the other would like to work on if he didn't want others to overhear in the first place.

"So what's with the musing on future transport? You homesick for your time or something?"

Or, well, trying to. The phone lagged and made him type it anyway. He hums at the question, brows arching at the continuation. His lips twist.

"Stupid conversation." Terry shrugged. "Not much to be homesick for in my time."
