that's the thing about illicit affairs . . .

london   looked   up   at   enzo,   taking   a   deep   breath   before   shaking   her   head.   she   knew   that   she   had   free   will.   if   she   really   wanted   to   be   with   enzo,   all   it   would   take   is   a   few   easy   words.   but   for   some   strange   reason,   the   words   got   lost   on   her   tongue.   “   enzo…   ”   she   whispered,   looking   between   his   eyes   and   his   lips.   “   you   know   i   do…   i   just…   i   don't   wanna   ruin   this.   ”

leans weight into palm that settles on the wall behind, next to her head, further closing little distance that remained between them. could notice how she was battling thoughts and feelings, though argument she conjures doesn't resonate. “ that's a cop - out and you know it, london. ” scoffs, slowly shaking his head, hues boring into hers. “ you're either in or you're out. i don't have time for games. ”

kenzo   leaned   against   the   wall,   watching   faye   go   through   her   clothes   with   a   sense   of   urgency.   he   yawned,   completely   uninterested   with   this   idea.   “   listen,   wenny.   this   is   the   last   thing   keziah   would   be   cool   with.   i   think   she'd   deadass   kill   me   if   she   caught   me   out   with   you…   "   he   chuckled,   crossing   his   arms   over   his   chest   as   she   looked   her   over.   he   was   always   told   to   keep   his   distance   from   faye,   especially   by   keziah.   he   didn't   normally   listen   to   her,   but   in   cases   like   this…   he   wouldn't   overstep   her   boundaries. 

standing in front of a mirror, brings two hangers with skimpy tops over her frame, switching between them repeatedly, before throwing kenzo a pointed look over dreadful nickname. “ right ... 'cause she'd be totally cool with you being in my room, watching me get dressed, ” floats toward him with a taunting smirk across features, dropping the hangers on her bed. “ or undressed. ” index finds his chest, digging lightly into muscled flesh, pushing him literally and figuratively. faye always got a kick out of messing with his head. “ come on, don't be boring. keziah is out of town and i need arm candy. ” brows raise and lashes bat, faux innocence in her eyes. “ she doesn't have to know. ”

"do you?" she couldn't possibly mean it. not the girl he used to know, not the one that had stolen his heart all his years ago. sure, people changed and time had a cruel way of hardening the edges, but he refused to believe the warmth they shared had completely turned to stone. "you think my closet is full of skeletons?" doesn't even flinch under her gaze as he takes a final step to close the distance between them, taller frame hovering over her. the closeness alone will be the end of him, and he knows it. yet, he can't help himself. not even after all this time. not when she's everything he's ever needed, everything he's ever loved. " my side of the street is exactly where you left it. unlike you, i didn't hide from the ugly truth of where we came from."

question lingers between them. does she mean it ? safer not to answer, not to acknowledge the way his proximity still knots something deep inside her chest. how impossible it is to look at him and not remember every version of herself he'd met. “ i don't know what you came here looking for, isaiah, ” voice steadies as arms fold across her chest, creating a barrier where distance no longer exists. “ but i don't think you're gonna find it. ” chin lifts defiantly, though conviction wavers the moment eyes lock with his. those damn eyes, still warm and familiar, capable of making her feel sixteen years old and hopelessly lost. “ you help other people keep their skeletons hidden. ” accusation lands sharp, softened only by the sadness threatening beneath them. “ i didn't hide — i moved on, ” a beat passes, “ there's a difference ... one means you're running away, the other means you're smart enough to know when it's time to let go. ”

she can't even remember how long she's been waiting to hear the same words that are now rolling down his tongue, but now that they're resting in the space between them. all she wants is for him to take them back, to stop ripping open the wounds she had been trying so desperately to heal. a broken breath escapes her plump petals, the fragile mask she'd been clinging to completely shattering into pieces. "stop," the brunette begs, taking a shaky step backward. "you can't — you can't say things like that now, not after everything." tears blur her vision but she refuses to let them fall, instead long lashes blink them away as she forces herself to look at him. "what do you want me to do with that? what am i supposed to do with that? " her throat feels tight, burning as the words pour out of her. "is that supposed to comfort me ? am i supposed to be grateful that you love me enough to ruin both of our lives but not enough to actually choose me ?"

the words land exactly where they're meant to. cruel not because she's wrong, but because she isn't. henrik goes still, gaze dropping between them as if the answer might somehow be waiting there. “ you think i don't know how unfair this is ? ” asks softly, exhaustion bleeding through polished composure. “ i know how it looks, ayla. i know it sounds like i'm asking for credit, when i'm miserable about a choice i'm still making. ” jaw tightens, eyes briefly shutting as frustration flashes across features. for a moment, all he can do is watch her retreat from him, as though the distance might somehow make this easier. “ i'm not trying to ruin your life ... i just thought you deserved to know. ” even if the truth might be harrowing. hues lifts back to hers, painfully honest despite himself. “ i don't know how to choose between the life i've spent twenty-eight years being raised for ... and the person i love. ” swallows hard, ache settling in his chest.

"   haven't   you   heard   ?   i'm   terrible   at   breaking   old   habits   .   "   and   he   happens   to   be   her   longest   ,   and   most   addictive   one   yet   .   "   yes   but   in   a   hot   way   .   "   teases   on   a   smile   ,   glancing   down   to   the   cuts   on   her   knees   and   shrugging   ,   "   might   have   a   gnarly   bruise   on   my   ass   tomorrow   but   nothin'   i   can't   handle   it   .   but   if   you   want   to   dress   up   like   a   sexy   nurse   for   me   ,   i   won't   complain   .   "   a   grin   breaks   out   across   her   lips   when   he   surprisingly   caves   into   her   request   ,   whisked   off   of   her   feet   and   into   big   ,   warm   arms   .   if   she   weren't   rapidly   sobering   up   ,   would   think   this   might   be   a   dream   .   arm   wraps   around   his   shoulder   and   she   relaxes   into   the   embrace   ,   cheek   pressed   to   this   chest   as   digits   toy   with   the   hair   at   his   nape   ,   "   didn't   ruin   any   of   your   plans   tonight   ,   did   i   ?   any   hot   date   that   you   had   to   ditch   to   come   save   me   ?   "

“ which one am i ? ” slips out, more earnest than intended. “ the old habit you want to break, or the one you can't ? ” smirk softens whatever vulnerability might've lingered beneath the words, though not entirely. adjusting her higher in toned arms, instinctively tightens his hold, settling her weight comfortably against chest as he motions past the crowd, towards the exit. it's frustating, how natural it feels. warmth of her tucked against him, fingers playing with hair at his nape, makes it dangerously tempting to forget why he'd spent weeks keeping his distance in the first place. “ let's not unlock any new kinks tonight, trouble ... though if you're worried about bruising, i could be convinced to offer a massage. ” amusement flashes across dark features before her question earns a low scoff. “ no hot date. ” gaze drops to hers for a moment, something softer creeping in despite himself. “ i don't really have time to entertain a relationship. ” irony is not lost on him, after dropping everything the second she ringed. at her beck and call, in a moment's notice. pathetic, maybe ... or maybe eden had always been the exception. “ besides, ” brows lift slightly, “ hard to compete with a drunk girl falling off bar tops for my attention. ”
