Pick your beak up Queen your plague mask is falling
The new wave of attention for this post is concerning
I’m gonna fucking scream, my MIL has diabetes and asthma, is 63, and cannot fucking understand why me and Kev keep telling her that we don’t want to meet up with her right now to “Go do something fun”
BECAUSE WE DON’T WANT TO ACCIDENTALLY INFECT AND KILL YOU, DEB
Both. She doesn’t seem to grasp the fact that she’s in danger and that me and Kev are both essential employees in essential industries and have to keep working and can’t isolate ourselves, which of course only increases the risk of going to see her, which is why we’re both like “Listen we don’t know what we’ve been around we don’t want to infect you by accident, you are literally in the age group where it’s dangerous AND have two things that could make it worse”
She’s like almost insulted that we don’t want to go out to dinner with her, but
1. THE RESTURANTS ARE ALL CLOSED IT’S ALL TAKEOUT OR DELIVERY ONLY
2. DEB YOU COULD FUCKING DIE
Why are all older people apparently like this?
Did they not read about the fucking plagues?
Do they not care?
My dad is the same way, my grandma is WORSE. Why.
There has to be a reason.
I have the same two illnesses, only I have Type One diabetes, and I’m not sure which one your grandmother has OP. Why doesn’t she get how serious that would get for her?
Mother in law, type 2, and I don’t know. I really don’t fucking know. We’ve both explained it to her twice over and she’s watched the news and it’s like trying to explain it to a fucking brick wall. None of it sinks in.
“Oh it’s worse for old people,” she says, “But I’m not that old.”
“YOU ARE SIXTY THREE.” Kev says. “MOM YOU ARE SIXTY THREE YOU ARE PRECISELY IN THE AGE GROUP WHERE IT IS DANGEROUS AND HAVE TWO ILLNESSES THAT IT COMBINES WITH TO KILL PEOPLE.”
“Oh I’m sure it’ll be fine. We should go get dinner and go antique shopping!”
“MOM ALL THE RESTAURANTS ARE CLOSED NO WE ARE NOT DOING THAT.”
(Huffy) “Well if you don’t want to spend time with your mother you can just say so.”
Kev and me both; “Muffled screaming”
@ all of you very reasonably saying “well perhaps you could skype or facetime her for movies or dinner?”
I wish. I really wish. But this is a woman who refuses to learn how to google things and won’t go to the online Home Depot website unless we’re there “Because otherwise she might get computer viruses”.
There is a 0% chance that I can teach her how to use skype over the phone. And we’ve explained to her that stores are closed and you cannot eat in restaurants right now but she cannot wrap her head around this. “That’s silly. What if we order carry out and just sit down and eat? They can’t stop us.”
On the other hand, my parents at least are being reasonable and cautious thank fucking lord
I am sorry but also it’s so fucking funny that she’s more worried about the computer viruses right now
THAT IRONY WAS NOT LOST ON ME
suffering from cheek kisses deficiency (self diagnosed)
So. When I was in 5th grade. All my classmates had ganged up on me and called me a lesbian and I didn’t even know what it meant at the time. I even said “I’m Spanish. Not lesbianese”
Anyways. At lunch a lunch lady had saw them making fun of me and asked when they said and I told her they called me a lesbian and she told them to apologize????
And then I remember telling my teacher the next day and as class was leaving she asked for me to hang back. She told me that being a lesbian was nothing bad and to just ignore them. I was like “I don’t even know what a lesbian is? All i said was that queen amidala was so pretty I wanted to marry her” and my teacher chuckled and nodded her head before saying that I could go.
Y'know…looking back on this, I’m pretty sure my teacher was a lesbian.
This is the only valid reply on this post.
So boss just put out the schedule for the next month and not a single week do I work less than 60 hours. My friends who work up at the hospital say theirs are the same and usually worse. My friends who work at grocery stores are the same.
I imagine most essential employees are all in the same boat.
All I’m saying is that we should all simultaneously go on strike after this is under control.
Me @ my co-worker; you know how you were saying how fucked they’d be here if we all just. Left. Anyway lemme tell you about a thing called unions.
Y’all don’t even get credit half the time for being front-line health care workers, which is bullshit.
I would honestly be astonished if I worked any 5 day weeks for the next several months
People I know keep asking me if I can work from home, and all I have for them is bitter laughter.
Not unless we suddenly get way better at robotics, no
@systlin @dancing-thru-clouds What can those of us who are not working and/or working from home do to help people like you out, aside from staying home & not hoarding medical supplies?
(Can we send you groceries? Or something like that?)
The thought is very sweet, but I’m in a lucky position where I can afford groceries. Probably better than a lot of folks right now, given that my site has authorized any and all overtime for essential personnel until the pandemic is under control.
A little commiseration is nice, and go look after vulnerable people in your community. Food banks are scrambling for supplies right now!
Right? I can afford food and such, and have been using that to help out my friends who are artists and teachers who are now out of a job for A While. But get together a donation for a homeless outreach program or something-I’m really scared for that population
Yeah.
I’ve found a few places online that are selling N95 masks, at inflated prices and incidentally anyone who price gouges like that during a crisis is going to be gnawed by Nidhogg after they die, in-between reporting them for crisis price gouging am seriously considering getting a case and donating it to the hospital.
And donating to the local food bank, because lord knows folks are gonna need it.
*pounds fists on the table* FOOD BANKS!
As a worker at a food bank, we need help. If you need a job, we might be hiring (minimum wage, but still). If you can volunteer, please do. If you can donate money, please do.
We can provide 6 meals with every $1 we get, and everyone right now needs food.
THIS
IF YOU WISH TO HELP GIVE YOUR LOCAL FOOD BANK MONEY

Hey guys I just found out in this class that during the Black Death, aka The Great Mortality, the gravediggers guild in Florence negotiated themselves a higher salary and political power because they were suddenly the unexpendable laborers supporting society....Just An Idea from 700 years ago
