Hi, I want to talk about this because one of my twitter mutuals tweeted this screenshot and the captured tweet actually makes me slightly mad.

I get the feeling that the people who genuinely talk about mental health and it's reality in a non sugarcoated way and use art as an outlet for what they struggle with get accused of glamorizing or romanticizing mental illness way more than people who actually glamorize it.

Dominic has talked about his struggles several times in interviews and in his songs and uses imagery related to it in his music videos. And let me tell you, I, as a person with depression and anxiety, feel really understood by him. That's part of what drew me to his music initially (next to how genuinely smart he is and what an amazing person and the values he stands for and how he portrays that in his music) like listen to Medication or Kill Somebody, he understands because he writes about his own experiences!

Let's talk about the part with the pills: He has Adhd and got prescribed medication for it and he himself said that he felt it destroyed his personality. That's his experience. Where is that glamorized? And honestly sometimes meditation is prescribed too easily instead of dealing with the problem, some people don't like being on medication for their issues (I personally choose not to take antidepressants) and some people are really happy with it because it makes their lives so much easier.

The straight jacket part: I'm guessing it's mainly about the psychotic kids video. It's the perfect imagery for that video. The song is about the older conservative generation saying that the more liberal younger generation is psychotic anyway and doesn't know what they want, they have to he controlled. What do you do with a straight jacket? Basically control someone so they don't hurt themselves or in this case others (the older generation and their beliefs). No glamorization, real good use of imagery.

Mental illness as an aesthetic: Where? He talks & sings about it because he experiences it. And guess what: mental illness generally impacts huge part of your life. So of course you're gonna find it in the stuff he does. Where the fuck is that using it as an aesthetic?
