Y’ALL, THIS QUOTE IS SO IMPORTANT. yeah, kylo is talking to rey when he says this— but couldn’t he also be talking to/about himself??

throughout tfa & tlj, it’s clear that kylo has a problem with holding onto the past: his obsession with vader, his need to wear a mask and change his name to cover up where he comes from. his inability to let go of these things and stop comparing himself to those who came before him is what holds him back from becoming the evil, ruthless leader that snoke wants him to be; at the same time, it also holds him back from turning from the dark side and joining his parents and rey in the light. his constant need to be better than vader and live up to everyone’s expectations tears him apart and inhibits him from really accomplishing anything.

when he’s speaking to rey about becoming who you’re meant to be, i think that, in a way, he’s trying to prevent her from making the same mistakes he had: getting too caught up in the past. but while he’s speaking to rey, i think he’s also speaking to himself; a last-ditch effort to try and get himself out of this conflicted middle-ground between turning and going full dark side that he stands in.

kylo wants & needs so badly to let go of the past, but as we can see from tfa and tlj, he just can’t; he needs guidance, and with no one to help him, he’ll stay stuck, miserable and lonely, on the dark side.
