Listen, the Netflix version of ASOUE added a lot of scenes that contradicted the books (*violently coughs* the poison darts scene *violently coughs*) but then they added this scene, which isn’t based on anything in the books, but damn if it doesn’t capture the spirit of the overall series:
- The fact that the Baudelaires are the only one who can see through Olaf’s disguises, so it’s only fitting that Olaf is the only one who can see through one of the Baudelaires’ disguises.
- The banter.
- The fact that Olaf is actually amused by the whole thing.
- The fact that Klaus is winning.
- The fact that Olaf knows Klaus is winning and is still amused.
- “Dr. Faustus.”
- The fact that Olaf clearly recognizes the name, ‘Dr. Faustus’, which implies that he’s knowledgeable about the play. What I love about this is that a casual viewer might think his knowledge is a plothole because Olaf, three seconds later, doesn’t seem to recognize the word ‘Oxford’, which the narrative sets up as an example of his ‘ignorance’, and the entire series is pretty much built on the idea that the ‘good guys’ are educated and the ‘bad guys’ are uneducated…but my favorite part out of all 13 books is when Olaf starts reciting, ‘This Be The Verse’, by memory, which is something that he shouldn’t be able to do because he’s a ‘bad guy’, and it’s pretty much implied that the whole ‘good = educated, bad = stupid’ binary was created by the ‘good guys’ in order to pat themselves on the back, because surely, anyone who was smart would pick their side, right? Right???
- Also the fact that Dr. Faustus is about a man who is so smart that he succumbs to his own hubris by damning his soul to gain more knowledge/power. I just feel like, after everything the VFD has done, out of the plays out there…yeah, Olaf would be interested in that one.
- That beard.
