I know this is a deeply American thing to say but I am begging everyone to stay the fuck away from military recruiters. Especially high school kids. You are going to be seeing an unholy amount of them in schools or around schools or literally anywhere kids are known to congregate. THIS INCLUDES ALL FORMS OF ROTC. Stay the fuck away from military recruiters. As someone who’s familiar with entirely too many branches through entirely too many friends and family, including my partner, recruiters are authorized to say literally any fucking thing they think will make you sign on that line. They cannot and will not deliver on those promises. They need bodies for the war they’re pretending is only now starting up again. That’s all you are. A body. Stay the FUCK away from the military.

My brother enlisted coming out of high school. I was in high school the next year. He bombed out of basic training PDQ and was back at home and SERIOUSLY fucked up from it and never actually recovered, I don’t think.

So I get to my junior year in high school and we *must* talk to the military recruiters. It’s required. We can tell them any old thing we want to, but we *must* at least hear them out. Being the kind of person I am, I did. I listened. I talked, and I listened to the guy’s responses. I told him I’d discuss it with my brother who had done basic training.

I got home, and told him that I’d had the conversation with the recruiter. He looked me dead in the eye and said, “Whatever he told you, it was a bold-faced lie. They’re allowed and ENCOURAGED to lie to get recruits. Do NOT even give him a “no thanks.” Just ignore any contact.”

This was in 2001, BEFORE 9/11.

Imagine how desperate they are for recruits now.

If they ask you what time it is, refuse to even look at your watch. Don’t even let them get into it. If you *have to* talk to them, tell them flatly that you’re not interested and that you aren’t going to budge. And then DON’T.

Because they don’t give one single solitary shit about you.

Also if you show even the slightest bit of interest, they will literally stalk you. They will send you things in the mail for years, they will contact you on social media, they will email you, they will call your phone, they will call your parents' phones, they will have you pulled out of your classes to talk to them, they may even visit your home directly. If you change schools, they will follow you to that school. If you move to a new house (even a new town, a new state), they will find the address and follow you there too.

When I was like 14 or 15, I mentioned to my school counselor that I MIGHT CONSIDER looking into the military for college because I was a poor kid living in a rural meth town. I said that to her ONCE. That same week, I started receiving letters and emails from recruiters. I didn't have my own phone yet (again, poor kid) but my mom started getting calls from recruiters about me. I got FACEBOOK MESSAGES FROM GROWN ASS MEN TRYING TO RECRUIT ME. I was 15 AT THE OLDEST. By the time I was done with high school, I had moved to another school and changed addresses THREE TIMES and was living in a whole different state and I was still getting relentlessly bombarded with letters and calls. That is how creepy and obsessive and desperate these fuckers are to prey on vulnerable kids who just want a better life for themselves.

YES! It is the same cat! He was 1 year old in the original vine and he's 13 years old now! He's super healthy, very active for his age, and loves to cuddle.

I'm probably going to aim for some boring ass retail job. Nothing particularly fun, but still enough room for a little silliness to keep the work tolerable.

And at home, I have 4 or 5 different hobbies and interests that I can make more money from. I like drawing, I'm getting into 3D modeling and animation, I want to be a voice actor, and I'm good enough at video games and funny enough that I could try my hand at streaming.

With enough time, effort, and some luck, I could make a living wage from all these things. The sad part is, all these things still don't guarantee that. Just because I might have found a way to live well enough doesn't mean everyone else shouldn't be pissed.

I became best friends with one of my best friends because I liked them. We agreed that they would reach out to me if they wanted a romantic relationship, instead of me asking if they've changed their mind every month. Now, I'm starting to think that they just aren't interested... But that changes nothing. I still like them, and they're still one of my best friends. We don't need to be dating to enjoy each other's company.

This is opposed to one of my other friends who unironically made a suicide pact with his fiance.
