Enjoy the Images, Words, and Especially the Music

Just finished The Black Jacobins, which tells how the Haitian Revolution became the only successful slave uprising in history. Toussaint Louverture stands at the center — brilliant, complicated, deeply human — and the whole story is powerful and inspiring.

What I’m walking away with:

• Big change usually starts with regular people who refuse to accept the world as it is.

• Leaders can be flawed and still shape history in enormous ways.

• Freedom is never handed over; it’s fought for, inch by inch.

Reading this also makes it impossible not to think about Haiti today — all the struggles, the resilience, the beauty, and the weight of that revolutionary past. It left me wanting to understand more about Haiti’s culture, its people, and how that history still lives in the present. Definitely planning to keep reading and learning.
