Because, basically, I'm not sure I find it realistic that a woman (or man) appointed to this role would last long if she was terribly abrasive or confrontational. It would be counterproductive and distracting for everyone involved. (It serves a purpose in the book, but I prefer how the movie did it.)

Movie!Stratt creates the appearance of being very consensus-oriented. She doesn't even acknowledge the concept of power games or sexism for that matter. Authority doesn't live in confrontation or visible status markers but in the visible support and deference of everyone around her, because she made sure they are all pulling in the same direction to begin with.

She's absolutely has a lot of power but she's keeping it understated. Nothing flashy. Business casual, always moving, flat shoes, calm voice, always questions, honest answers. She's consulting the room (while leading the conversation), she is to the point but reasonably polite, she works in tandem with others, creates a sense of shared experience. "Applause!" Carl knows exactly when to jump into the conversation while deferring to her authority, "Talk to her", "Just answer the question", "I would take the three". He clearly really knows her and can pick up his end of that game. The "We don't know" chorus. The "What's the alternative" centrifuge discussion. "Thank you so much" to the underling with the coffees. Seemingly flat hierarchies.

She lets people talk and then gleans what she needs. She gives credit.

Her job is to make the decisions and take responsibility, to keep the momentum going. People are unsurprisingly okay with handing it off. She points, they march.

No one considers opposing her because they all trust her. Because they feel involved in the process. It's not hard to ask, after all, when everyone knows what it's for.

Even in the end, she has the entire team on her side when confronting Grace with his choice. Because none of it is about power or ego. Only about the mission.

The lack of future international cooperation gets her most emotional utterance out of the entire film. "Which they won't."

At every point she is pulling for a team effort. And it works. (Except one time.)

Helm Crew

1.Commander/Pilot

Overall mission success. They are responsible for the safety of the crew and ship. The main decision maker. The primary pilot who will pilot Blip-E.

2.Copilot

Secondary pilot who assists and coordinates with the pilot/commander.

3.Relief Pilot

Pilot/Navigator who maintains both ships' course through space before and during the retrieval stage.

4.Flight Engineer

Ensures Blip-E's engines and fuel are in order. Assists in the launch of Blip-E, and in docking and landing of both ships.

Medical Team

5.Flight Surgeon

Head of the Medical team of Blip-E. Primary care physician of the crew and monitors their long-term health.

6.Physician

Physician who assists the flight surgeon. Provides comprehensive care.

7.Nurse

Assists the flight surgeon and physician. Provides direct patient care.

8. Psychologist

Regularly checks and evaluates the crew's mental health. Provides therapy, evaluations, and testing. Works alongside the Psychiatrist.

9.Psychiatrist

Diagnoses mental illnesses with in the crew and provides treatment. Works with Psychologist.

10.Eridian Physiologist

Responsible for taking care of the deceased Blip-A crew. Provides their expertise for the medical team.

Science Division

11.Principal Scientist

Lead Scientist who oversees everything and everyone under their supervision. Main project strategist. Collaborates with the Engineering Division.

12.Physicist

Helps the Engineering Division with handling the logistics in Blip-A's recovery and helps keep Blip-E's systems maintained and running.

13.Astrophysicist

Helps the Helm Crew in the navigation and exploration of space. Provides insight on relativity and keeps track of the duration of the mission.

14.Astrophage/Taumoeba Specialist

Maintenance of the fuel tanks. Responsible for ensuring Blip-A's hull has no remaining Taumoeba present on board before recovery.

15.Space Radiobiologist

Responsible for ensuring space radiation does not leak into Blip-E. Works with the Engineering Division to block radiation in Blip-A.

Engineering Division

16. Principal Engineer

Head engineer supervises stages 5 of the mission. Lead designer. Collaborates with the Science Division.

17. Senior Mechanical Engineer

Deals with Blip-E's maintenance and the repair and recovery of Blip-A. Assists the principal Engineer.

18. Junior Mechanical Engineer

Assist the senior mechanical engineer and principal engineer with regularly maintaining Blip-E's systems.

19.Process Engineer

Ensures Blip-E and Blip-A maintain and are compliant with safety regulations.

20.Astronautical Engineer

Helps in Blip-E maintenance and in the repair, connecting, and recovery of both ships.

21.Material Engineer

Helps in creating the necessary materials to repair the ship and that are needed for the mission.

22.Crystallographers

Handles communication within both ships. Maintains Blip-E's source of visuals.
