The file of one Commander James Bond stares back at him, still and unwavering, the spitting image of how he was in the dream.

They said that there were ships that left long before The War had torn the Earth apart. They were supposed to come back, once everything had settled, to help people rebuild. Q always thought it was a bunch of hogwash. It didn’t matter to him much anyway: he had James with him, and that was more than enough.

But, he supposed, they could all do with a bit of hope.

Q had no reason to believe Bond was dead. Last time he saw him he gave him a car and saw him ride off into the sunset.

Initially I thought “Oh maybe this is in the middle of the movie where shit happened and Bond nearly died yada yada” but the how would Q know who isn’t his handler anymore AND SUDDENLY IT HIT ME

THE SMART BLOOD

Like I don’t think Bond could have easily gotten that out of his system when he left and yea technical Q is supposed to deactivate it and delete all data now that Bond isn’t a double 0 anymore but… Would he?

Or would he have it running in the background, always on, no label, nothing to give away who he is tracking, encrypted, strictly for Qs eyes only. Glancing at it when he had a particularly bad day, a mission gone wrong, unable to sleep starring at the blinking dot somewhere in the Caribbean. And it hurts bc it keeps reminding him of a loss he doesn’t want to admit and it makes him feel hollow and empty, but its also reassuring and stable and save, knowing that somewhere out there Bond is alive and breathing and happy and there should everything go to shit.

And then suddenly the dot disappears.

And Q fucking panics.

Is he dead? Is it his system? What what??

Q can’t fucking sleep and he cleans is flat excessively and this is so much worse so so much worse oh god–
