This isn’t quite the story that I envisioned starting out, but it is so, so much better. 

Because a lot of times, writers cling so desperately to an idea (hi, me!) even when they’re struggling, to the point where they finally give up in frustration.

Be flexible in your writing. Trust your instincts. If everything in you is screaming something’s gone wrong, it probably has.

A story is a series of footsteps. Every word, every sentence, every paragraph, every scene -- all of them are footsteps heading in a particular direction.

Sometimes, the end result is a perfectly straight line, from start to finish. That’s fine.

And sometimes the end result is a gradual curve, which is also fine.

It’s even fine if the end result is all weaving and meandering.

The important part is, all the footsteps follow logically, one after the other.

The problems come in when you force the trail. You’re writing, writing, writing, and you realize, whoops, the story’s not going in the direction you intended. So instead of backing up and rebuilding it piece by piece, you just give it a hard shove to get it back on track, only to discover that it’s turning off your intended trail again.

The end result is a trail of footsteps with huge gaps, deep ruts where you stumbled, missing sections where you shoved the plot so hard it went flying through the air, and... well, a mess.

When this happens, you can do one of three things:

Edit it to cover those gaps and smooth out the ruts.

Rewrite it entirely because the gaps and ruts are too disruptive to fix.

Recognize that you’re trying to tell an entirely different story and try again, only without the GPH (Grievous Plotty Harm).

Pitti Uomo is the twice-a-year menswear tradeshow in Florence, Italy, where industry buyers and sellers meet so they can coordinate their seasonal offerings. But at last month’s Pitti Uomo, there was a strange and unexpected booth. It was nearly all white, had angular shelves, and showcased a new line of ready-to-wear shoes. Above the display, a printed banner read, “Foster & Son.”

For the last hundred years, London’s bespoke tailoring and shoemaking trades have prided themselves on being different from ready-to-wear. Many companies took great pains to explain how custom-clothing is superior to factory production. Additionally, the Savile Row Bespoke Association tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to guard who can use the term bespoke. But in the last ten years, there’s been a shift. Many of London’s best bespoke firms are now using the craft side of their business to give their ready-to-wear lines a halo — something Parisian haute couture houses have been doing for decades.

The venerable firm Foster & Sons has carried the grand tradition of bespoke shoemaking since 1840. They’re part of a small group of custom shoemakers located on the West End, sitting alongside names such as John Lobb and George Cleverley. During England’s medieval period, London was split into two halves. There was the proper city of London on the east, which was a center for finance, banking, and law. Then the City of Westminster on the west. When King Henry VIII built his new royal palace on St. James in the 16th century, he brought with him his aristocratic following. Wealthy elites were happy to live west of London because the pleasurable countryside was usually upwind of the smoke drifting from the crowded City. Over time, as money poured into the area, the West End became known for all the things associated with British aristocratic life — shopping, leisure, gentlemen’s clubs, government, and bespoke shoemaking.

Why you are all wrong about James Bond and his suits.

There are many assumptions that we make as a fandom; that James bond likes, fast cars, fast women, and impeccably tailored bespoke suits. But how true is that of Daniel Craig’s Bond? Does Craig’s bond wear bespoke? Does his Bond even like wearing suits?

The answers supported by on-screen evidence might surprise you.

Does Craig’s Bond wear bespoke tailoring?

The answer is an empathic No. Craig’s Bond’s designer of choice is an unusual one for Bonds, Tom Ford an American designer, whom he wears almost exclusively especially when it comes to tailoring. This replaces the British and European designers or Bonds past. Here’s the kicker though Tom Ford doesn’t have a bespoke tailoring service. They have a made to measure service but that’s a very different kettle of fish.

A made to measure suit will be chosen from a set off the peg designs and a pattern cutter will alter the standard pattern for that suit to your measurements so if you need longer sleeves or trousers they will do that for you but that’s very different from bespoke.

Bespoke suits are made from the ground up for the individual wearing them. They are designed and cut completely to there specifications. Do you want a three-button suit rather than two? Double-breasted rather than single, peaked lapels rather than notch a bespoke tailor can do that all for you.

The making process is often very different too. Much of sewing for bespoke suits is done by hand, by skilled craftspeople in a workroom, rather than machinists in a factory. The bespoke suit is fitted to the wearer’s body and all its idiosyncrasies. If you have one shoulder high than the other they will fix that rounded shoulders and a stoop they will fix that too.

If you want to see what Bespoke British Tailoring looks like and how it differs from Bond’s, look at the suits Gareth Mallory wears they are by Off Savile Row Tailors Timothy Everest who also made the suits for Hynx and Blofeld in Spectre. The suits Mallory wears have a cut that is elegant and timeless and discretely form-fitting rather than Bond’s hipper tighter suits.

In my opinion, Craig’s suits although tailored are probably off the peg and then altered by a tailor after purchase and possibly not by the in house tailors. I say this because the way he wears his suits is over tailored in a way that Tom Ford runway suits aren’t suggesting he had them done himself.

Now let’s talk about that fit in the picture above is from spectre and James is wearing a suit that doesn’t fit him AT ALL as a trained tailor/costume maker this suit makes me cringe it completely doesn’t fit him and it looks like the suit is wearing him rather than the other way around. Notice the way the fabric of the suit strains to fit his waist and the chest gapes open and doesn’t lie flat. You can see the same thing happening in the suit below.

Go back to the picture of Mallory and see how a suit is supposed to fit notice how it caresses his figure and the sleeves fall gently from the shoulder. 

Does Craig’s Bond even like wearing Suits?

In my opinion, He does not. Let’s look at what Craig’s Bond actually wears on Screen. I counted all the outfits in his movies and here are the statistics:

Unlike past Bond’s we can see Craig’s Bond favours casual clothing. Of the sixty outfits, he wears on screen 55% aren’t suits. In his first outing Casino Royale, that percentage is a huge 70%. Which isn’t what you expect from Bond is it.

Note: For the purpose of this discussion, I’m talking about characters who are headcanoned as and written/drawn as cis men. I’m not talking about characters who are – or who are headcanoned as – non-cis. We need more headcanons with characters who are trans, genderfluid, non-binary, agender, etc. until we get proper healthy representation in media!

I’m talking about the ideas that perpetuate harmful stereotypes, are rooted in misunderstanding or misogyny, or are inaccurate, specifically regarding two things:

One partner in a new m/m ship has to always be “The Girl.” This is usually the smaller, skinnier, prettier character, or the one who’s accommodating, nicer, and gentler. In a canon relationship with outside power dynamics (royalty, business, etc.), “The Girl” is usually but not always subordinate to the other one in some way.

You can tell which one bottoms in anal sex because <insert inaccurate reason here, usually based on physical appearance or personality traits>. Often, this person is “The Girl.”

Because that? Is not how it works.

First off, if two characters are cis men, neither is “The Girl.” So we can scratch that right off the list.

Second, you can’t “tell” which character would bottom by personality traits, physiology, age, job description, or any other factor. The only way you can tell which character would bottom – and the best way to convey that idea to your reader – is to have them simply want to. Say it right there on the page.

A man may enjoy bottoming. A man may not enjoy it. A man may enjoy both – or neither. A man may enjoy it but might have eaten a big meal, so bottoming would be uncomfortable or messy. That’s it.

Please, please don’t have the other partner (the one often labeled “The Girl”) shocked and reeling when asked to be the one doing the penetrating rather than being penetrated. There is nothing wrong, demeaning, or degrading with bottoming.

Seems like every time Tumblr finds a new fandom with an m/m ship, so many discussions focus on which character is “the girl” and which one “always” bottoms.
