Ethan Marks’ performs Thomas Sturm's “Haydn’s Concerto for Trumpet," a performance-art work for solo trumpet and electronics that explores the materialization of sound and its treatment as a plastic medium. Marks becomes phonograph as a speaker attached to the bell of his trumpet sends historic recordings of the instrument into his mouth, which he then manipulates with subtle (and not so subtle) changes in mouth shape and valve positions. The recordings are a plundered collage of trumpet repertoire, pieces of music significant to Marks’s relationship with the trumpet and his musical development.

"Pneumata" is a autonomous sound sculpture that evokes the presence of a person experiencing breathing difficulties. The simulation of regular deep breaths to rapid or limit breathing, and finally to total breathlessness, mimic the stages of human pneumological issues. The robot cycles through these states in a manner influenced by the breathing of interacting audience members. By sitting and breathing with Pneumata, participants experience a simulation of the interaction between breathless individuals and their caretakers.

“The Net is a metaphysical space that mimics our metaphysical experience of the dead as being neither here nor there but somehow everywhere yet nowhere in particular” (Gibson, 2007). "everywhere yet nowhere in particular" explores instances of digital ghosts, infomorphs, and objects left online by people who have died. Originally presented as a sound installation comprised of three video collages and one sound collage which stitched together the remaining bits of these people / infomorphs. This album documents in the sound of the space as well as the five parts to the sound collage. Exhibited in the WaveCave from 4/26 - 5/2. Where do we stop? The CALO Research Initiative is a collective exploring the implications of involving AI Performers in improvisation. Drawing from pataphysics and speculative fiction, this research explores subjects such as the nature of machine voices, the intersection of music between technological and biological bodies, and relationships between human and robot minds.
