I was thinking of the still lifes from the backrooms movie and as we know, the still lifes are how those people were remembered and reproduced in memory. And not only is Barbara's face fractured into many pieces, it's like, there's different views of it all just right next to each other which gave me cubism vibes specifically Picasso (I'm not an art expert so like, pinch of salt) so I decided to dig, none too deep, but look what I found :
The weeping woman (1937) by Picasso
Portrait of his partner Dora Maar.
Picasso was like really toxic to her and she got hospitalised for depression irl.
Femme assise dans un fauteuil noir (1962)
Portrait of his second wife Jacqueline
‘If you are a Picasso collector, you want to own a Jacqueline portrait, just as you would want to own a Marie-Thérèse or a Dora Maar, because they are windows into the artist’s life at that time.’ (I mean, this quote by Keith Gill is just really apt)
And to close out my very casual dip into research, we've got this :
Picasso's Self-portrait facing death (1972)
Painted just a few months before his death, he's depicted wide eyed, awaiting death with anxiety.
Idk I'd love if any art aficionado has got more cool insights into this Picasso X Backrooms symbolism.
