Infinite Incursions 8/31/2023: After-action Report
Results
It can be easy assume that our victory means that we did all the things right and there's no room for improvement, but US36's initial struggle to respond and react to US17 proves that there are challenges to the current modus operandi that US36 in general (and [TOLL] in specific) should address. US17 was a powerful enemy, and we cannot rely on being "the comeback kids" too often. We have broken even over the course of the last 8 incursions, and we're still coming off a losing streak of 4 losses in a row.
Knowing your enemy
US17 gave a solid example of how to work together as a server, regardless of whatever in-server politicking they may have going on outside of Incursion events. They had extremely even coverage of the sub-18 systems to the point finding a system that could be a "safe haven" for longer than a few hours was impossible. If you 'jumped over,' you were pretty much guaranteed to be picked off if you let your shields drop, sometimes for less than a minute.
Enemy teamwork
US17 didn't show any level of advanced inter-Alliance teamwork, but there was a clear, prearranged strategy that absolutely served them well in the first half of the incursion. The took a solid lead early and it was nearly six hours before US36 was able to claim a lead. The even distribution of player bases in the sub-18 systems combined with the established plans to 'scorched earth' any discovered shield-less bases meant that, early on, it was hard for any US36 player to gain a significant advantage.
Simultaneously, the invasion was near swarm levels of effective, hammering darn near any player base or ship available almost as soon as the incursion started. Nearly all the invading players were high level, meaning the response was challenging to say the least. The invaders were excellent tacticians, high-power, and ready to bring the pain early.
Enemy power
US17 has an appreciable number of "whale" players, as indicated by the lvl. 60 stations with maxed out ships and fully leveled crews. While few enough they could be avoided by anyone unable to directly take them on, the unusually high presence of them was cause for concern.
Enemy strategy/tactics
The long-term strategy for US17 appears to be to high hard and fast early on, then ride out the remainder of the incursion from the early successes. Clearly, this did not work out for them in the long run.
Alliances had some clear in-game communication and coordination happening. Several times we encountered a station that was defenseless and left to let the 10 min. timer elapse before alliance player bases appeared in-system and the full power of their strongest ships with PvP crews showed up to pick off the US36 players that showed up to target the "helpless" base. As soon as the more powerful stations/ships arrived to defend the system, the "weaker" station shielded up.
Tactically, individual players displayed similar tactics, searching for compromised S17 bases and lying in wait with cloaked ships or positioning their station nearby and waiting for a S36 player to target the 'bait' station.
This indicates that the practice of 'honeypotting' is a common one on US17 and should be expected from any incursion event with them in the future.
Enemy response/react
US17 had some impressively fast response times. Ranging from 10 minutes to as little as a few seconds to respond to an attack on one of their players.
Response was nearly always overwhelming, indicating at the least some communication within alliances if not the entire server.
Enemy weaknesses
US17 faltered during the "long tail" of the incursion. As the battle became one of attrition and the blitzkrieg became a thing of the past, allowing the more 'slow and steady' approach of US36 to win the day.
This author would like to point out that this may be the only reason US36 won this incursion.
Knowing your allies
US36 Teamwork
The absolute lack of unity, or at least diplomacy, among US36 was obvious. The distribution of safe-harbor systems was a good indicator of this, and the simple fact was that [TOLL], at the very least, was expecting other alliances (or at least other non-[TOLL] players) to use the incursion to snipe our players in attacks of opportunity was, perhaps, the clearest indicator of this division. The only 'teamwork' between alliances on display was the willingness to 'salt the earth' by destroying non-alliance player bases and ships with extreme prejudice.
US36 Power
US36 has few whales, though the alliances do tend to be "top heavy," meaning that a solid attack/defense could be mustered to counter 80%(anecdotal) of any significant incursion attacks.
US36 Strategy/Tactics
The majority of the strategy for US36 is, "Each player must be able to stand on their own, and other players helping you is a mercy at best."
Very Klingon philosophy, that.
US36 Response/React
US36 response time was...lackluster. Part of this was the lack of communication between alliances/factions. A player in [TOLL] couldn't reliably reach out to a nearby [IRON] player and expect a response.
US36 Weaknesses
The 'factioning' of the server, even during a larger event intended to pit the servers against each other regardless of inter-alliance politics, meant that there was almost no communication between allies-of-circumstance.
Response time is low and slow, which works for attrition but not for emergencies. There's no consistent emergency response protocol in place for US36.
Reaction is on a per-alliance level. Some alliances, like [TOLL], have a response based strictly on who happens to be online and in the right server at the moment.
Knowing yourself
[TOLL] Teamwork
[TOLL]'s collective team cohesiveness is spot on. There simply aren't examples of one team member being unwilling to work with another.
The 'working together' aspect is...spotty. If two members happen to have engaged in some level of teamwork in the past, then they generally performed well.
[TOLL] Power
While top-heavy, [TOLL] does not have any 'whale' members.
Power concentration in levels is diffident, at best. Members with similar levels may have wildly different power levels/load-outs/crews/etc.
[TOLL] Strategy/Tactics
[TOLL]'s organization is akin to an ant colony. The queen can direct inside the 'hive,' but the ants largely are allowed to roam free. There are 'scouts,' members who are more willing to explore and expand [TOLL]'s sphere, and the rest will follow, but there's no organization. Members fall back on habit more often than not, and said habits may not mesh well, depending on the player.
Training as teams is non-existent and it shows.
[TOLL] Response/React
Response time largely depended on who happened to be up and active at any given time. Standouts notably included Jettearoo, SpaceyDykeBLM, and DriveByBaggins, though this is reflective of this author's personal experience and fully anecdotal.
[TOLL] Weaknesses
Teamwork and response are [TOLL]'s worst features. As a ragtag band of marauding misfits and rogues, adherence to team structures is a notable weak point for the alliance.
Recommendations
Preparation
All lvl. 25s and above should be coached in the best way to prepare for incursions and the differences between invasion and defense fully explained to all members. Additionally, leadership should work with the team members to achieve the best options of their personal goals and tailor their ships, load-outs, and crew members to best fit with the team dynamics during Incursions.
Increased membership would always be a good thing, and outreach both on the server and to the larger communities in which players operate should be encouraged. The more players we can get to join the game, US36, and [TOLL] specifically, the better we'll perform from sheer numbers.
Even when US36 has a bye month or Incursions are put on hold for dev work, as incursions can be the single most challenging aspect of gameplay given how comparatively rarely they happen vs. anything else in the game, all players should be reminded that they'll either need to kit for Incursions or bunker down during incursions.
Better team divisions (see "Teamwork" below) will help, especially as team members work together during other events and assisting each other with dailies.
Communication
Encouraging all [TOLL] members to join the Discord server is a start, though in-game chat will continue to be the best option for fast response. With this in mind, the following recommendations may be the best methods of communication.
Up-to-the-minute and alerts: In-game chat - The in-game DM and Alliance chat system is still the best way to get attention directly to something immediately to players actively in-game. This is good for: Alerts (Base attacks, territory invasion, armada disruption, cloaked ship, etc.), in-game conversation, passing coordinates in-game, etc.
Real time, non-critical two-way communication, anything private to [TOLL]: Discord - Send invites to the Discord on a regular basis (weekly? monthly?), especially to members who are less active on in-game chat. ALTERNATELY: Some players don't like/trust Discord. Alternate methods should be explored for similar group-style communication.
FAQs, How-to guides, explanations, and dossiers: Tubmlr - Anything non-private should be posted to Tumblr (in other words, anything where the same information can be found in open spaces/sources, e.g. - "bunker" systems used in incursions, dossiers of problematic players and alliances, etc.)
Announcements and High-priority Alerts: Mailing list - A dedicated [TOLL] mailing list should be established to keep members up-to-date with the latest actions, how updates and announcements will impact [TOLL], etc.
Calendar: An events calendar that incorporates the in-game events, the schedule for territory defense, and related should be established on a shared-account service that syncs to personal calendars (Apple and Google calendars, Outlook, etc.)
Diplomacy
Greater outreach to other alliances is a must for continued success in incursions, and just enjoyable gameplay in general. Alliances of friendship (like [KATZ] should be pursued, and players helping other alliance's players should be encouraged. (Individual discretion should be allowed for players in alliances in Caution or Unfriendly status, and players should be advised to not interact with Enemy alliances without orders otherwise)
This diplomacy could be extended to allowing members of [TOLL] to use the semi-protected resources in neighboring territories, and this should be encouraged as a benefit to working with [TOLL].
Teamwork
Teams should be established, similar to Strike Team She-ra. 'Badging' can even be done via usernames, though we'll want to ensure we conform to character counts and Scopely allowed guidelines.

The Mystery of the Missing 7-day Chest
If you're anything like me, you grind on the daily to get the daily loyalty token so you can unlock the 7-day loyalty chest. The chest that's not there.
It turns out, this was on purpose. Apparently, some goodies that were supposed to be in said chest are not, so they've temporarily removed the chest so people didn't redeem their tokens and miss out.
If you're not on the official Discord server for ST:FC (or even if you are but can't sift through the hundreds of messages per hour like I struggle with), you'll likely have missed the info on this:
Discord is the easiest way to communicate over voice, video, and text. Chat, hang out, and stay close with your friends and communities.
So, no, it's not a bug.
The failure to be able to send ships to systems without the ships getting locked in the galaxy map requiring a restart is a bug and is legitimately frustrating.
Welcome to [TOLL]
This is the first official post of the official [TOLL] Toll Collectors blog/website. If you're here and not playing Star Trek: Fleet Command on Server US36, you're probably somewhat confused, so I'll summarize...I mean, I kinda just did...
THAT SAID, I am not the Admiral of [TOLL], that'd be SpaceyDikeBLM. Currently, the alliance is marked "private," meaning you'll need to get an invite to join. Several members are on the lookout for new players, so if you are on Server US36 and want to get hooked up with an invite, keep an eye out for the [TOLL] marker on other players' ships/stations and just pop us a message.
The membership is either queer or allied and ABSOLUTELY anti-whatever-the-hell-the-right-thinks-it's-getting-away-with-right-now. We don't tolerate bullies and WILL call you out if you are one. Generally, we all just want to play our silly temporally confused space game and have a little fun, but we also recognize that not everyone behaves in public. You play nice, we're nice. You play ugly...
Strike Team She-ra
Part of [TOLL] are a couple players from the happily merged-in, former alliance, [SHRA] Princess Alliance. [TOLL] and [SHRA] were a perfect match and teamed up quite often unofficially, and since [TOLL] was bigger and had a better support, [SHRA] decided to join [TOLL] as Strike Team She-ra. At present, our mandate is to function in the "lower level" spaces, that is anything below Ops lvl 30 is Strike Team She-ra's domain. I ([TOLL]PrincessColumbia) am the commander of this little team.
Depending on the need, we may keep Strike Team She-ra at this mandate or expand it as necessary. If you're interested in being part of the strike team, let me know and I'll see if you're a fit.
What to expect
Right now [TOLL] is at war with [NEXS], so expect a lot of reporting, dossier building, and information related to movements and getting our players through the events that happen regardless of the war happening or not.
While operating as [SHRA]'s Admiral, I had started a series of "how to play this game" videos that I'm hoping to continue, links to those will be posted here, too.
S36's Admiralty also voted on a new Rules of Engagement (RoE), which we'll be posting links to and doing breakdowns of here, as well.
That's the immediate future, visit early and often to stay up to date.
Hailing Frequencies on idle, fly safe out there.

[SHRA] Princess Rebellion is now Strike Team She-ra of the [TOLL] Toll Collectors alliance
After months of working on growing [SHRA] and not growing in number (for all we grew in power) it was becoming increasingly apparent that unless I took special measures to recruit outside the game, [SHRA] wasn't going to grow. Meanwhile, [TOLL] had been reaching out on a regular basis to help out, provide support during incurssions, and generally be fantastic allies in the game.
Well, as of a couple weeks ago, the entire membership of [SHRA] voted to merge with [TOLL], and we're now known as Strike Team She-ra. The specific details on how that works haven't been fully hammered out, but so far we're the "low-tier" strike team; since the game's rules say players above a certain level can't target lower level players and the former [SHRA] players are all comparatively lower level than the rest of [TOLL], our job is to sweep the lower level players when needed. (Wars, incursions, RoE violations, etc.)
So far it's been great fun and I'm really excited about where we're going with this.
...and maybe making Strike Team She-ra a full squadron...đ¤

Hi,
Itâs you friendly neighbor fanfic author here. In the light of this apparent new trend of people feeding unfinished fics to AI to get an âending,â and some people even talking about âblanket permissions,â let me just say this:
I EXPLICITLY FORBID ANYONE TO FEED MY FICS TO AI. DUDE, THAT IS ABOUT THE LEAST RESPECTFUL THING YOU CAN DO. IF YOU DO IT, SHALL YOU BE EXCOMMUNICATED FROM YOUR FANDOM AND WALK ON LEGOS BAREFOOT TILL THE END OF DAYS.
That is my anti-permission.
Thank you for your attention.
Just gonna say, "Same!" IF I die and someone wants to complete my fics, give them to someone who actually is a human person in that fandom/genre/creative space. That's assuming I haven't found an inheritor of my fics by then.
âoutside agitatorâ, you mean people that we donât know and didnât mobilize are traveling to our location to join the fight? adding an element of uncertainty that makes it harder for the cops to concentrate on beating us? SWEET!
On first pass, I read that as "outside alligator" and my brain did several segfaults trying to parse what an alligator (which should be outside) would be doing joining a fight or doing any significant traveling.
Doc, what are the top five items food banks LOVE to receive? I'm doing a collection soon and want to ask for specifics.
MONEY. WE WANT MONEY. MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY. WE CAN DO SO MUCH WITH IT. WE HAVE ACCESS TO DEALS YOU COULD NEVER. MONEY
That aside.
Iâm only going to talk about food items but if your food bank takes personal items, a lot of times diapers, feminine hygiene products, etc, are very very welcome.Â
1) Canned chicken and beefÂ
looooooove this stuff. Itâs expensive, it lasts forever, it tastes good and it can be used a variety of ways. This stuff is fucking catnip to food banks, itâs so hard for us to provide proteins.Â
2) Fancy nut butters
Peanut butter is a standby for food banks as a shelf-stable inexpensive protein, but if we have a family with a kid with a peanut allergy thatâs not going to work. Non-peanut butters are expensive and itâs something we hardly ever see donated. (we also like peanut butter, but thatâs easier for us to buy ourselves than non-peanut butters)
3) Canned or packaged tuna
You may notice a trend here in shelf-stable proteins. And yeah. Thatâs basically it, so Iâm not going to keep harping on it. But this stuff is a godsend.Â
4) Easy breakfast things for kids (Granola bars, instant oatmeal, and the like)Â
Whatever Donald Trump tells you, most people who get food from food banks are actually working their asses off and so they have to leave Obama to raise their baby or whatever, and they donât have a lot of time in the morning. Things like this that kids can make for themselves are expensive. (Another trend you may be noticingâdonate shit that costs a lot of money. That helps us more than all the shitty green bean cans in the world) But they are so helpful for busy working families where the parents may not have a set schedule and sometimes little Amanda is making her own breakfast before she runs off to school. Donât let kids go to school hungry.Â
5) Shelf-stable juice
This is one people never think of! But if you show up with a bunch of (preferably reduced sugar stuff) bottles of juice at my door, oh man, you are gonna get so many check mark and okay hand emoticons. This stuff is great for kids, and it doesnât require refrigeration until itâs opened, so it works great for food drives.Â
But seriously, give money
And itâs way better food, too, anything you get prepackaged has A TON of sugar and/or salt in itâŚcollecting cans may be more exciting than writing a check, but if the point is to help people, the check is going to get a lot more done
Yoooooo heads up for those of you with kids, I know this time of year schools start holding canned food drives so keep this in mind if youâre able to give.
collecting cans may be more exciting than writing a check, but if the point is to help people, the check is going to get a lot more done .
hint: the point should be to help people.
Also, please consider setting this as a scheduled post for June/July. A lot of food insecure families with children rely on school lunch to make ends meet, and thatâs obviously not an option during summer vacation. Lots of people give during November and December, but summer is a lean time for food banks. Which is a shame, cuz fresh produce is at a boom during that time of year, so not only would summer donations boost how many people the food banks can help, it would boost the quality of the help they provide.
As someone who has had to rely on food banks numerous times, can confirm that the above stuff is WAY better than, like, 99% of the crap that most people pull off their pantry shelves and shove in a box for donation.
But the money, give that if you at all can.
Seriously, you have NO idea how much you'll make the day of some emotionally and financially strapped mother who opens the food box during the holidays and finds a premium ham or whole-ass turkey that the food bank scored a ripping deal on. She'll be ugly-happy-crying because she gets to give her children the best meal they've had in months and the best holiday dinner they've had in a couple years.
And yes, I'm speaking from experience on this.
NO ROOM FOR MAYBES WEâRE PARTNERS IN CRIME
So proud of her transition!! Amazing results!! The light in her eyes is back. HRT is magic â¨
No wonder she kicks so much ass, when you've piloted a flying lion and faced down the emperor of the known universe, of course a corrupt politician is going to seem like a total chump!

I just remembered my second Pride, where I made different flag themed daisy chain bracelets/necklaces to hand out. I need folks to understand something:
They were free.
They were fucking free.
They were maybe ¢60 of acrylic yarn each at the most, and the whole ziploc bag of them took 2 hours max.
Three people gave me sad eyes until I took their money.
Someone who was clearly the mom friend of their group made me take a $5 and gave a 10 minute pep talk.
At least four more people insisted on getting change to pay for the, once again, free bracelets.
In spite of all these shenanigans, the absolute best was this one person who I can only describe as, âqueer surfer dude who looks like a boyfriend who looks like a girlfriend.â I can remember nothing of the outfit, only the impeccable vibes. I did the same thing I did with everyone else, explaining the bracelets were free, and they nodded along as they took the last 6 strand rainbow bracelet. As soon as they had it on their wrist, they pointed at something over my shoulder and, like a fool, I looked.
Next thing I know, theyâre running off cackling, yelling, âYOUâLL NEVER CATCH ME!â and Iâm holding a fucking $20. I had to stop at least two people from chasing them, cause they thought the person stole something, and then they tried to give me money cause they thought it was funny seeing me flail over people being Too Nice.
That was the year I got reverse-robbed at Pride. I hope everyone out there is having a good time and, in particular, that queer surfer dude is out there still causing benevolent chaos.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman told employees in an internal memo this week that the âblowupâ on the site would pass.
âItâs the latest example of a social media site making a critical mistake: users arenât there for the services, theyâre there for the community. Building barriers to access is a war of attrition.â
