one of my favorite lotr facts is that gondorians speak sindarin as a first language and yet when faramir was talking to frodo and sam about cirith ungol he was like “we don’t know what’s in there.” like faramir. cirith ungol is sindarin for “pass of the spider.” do the math
i want the gondorians to just be in denial. sitting around a fire after a day of badass rangering telling ghost stories and “I wonder what haunts Spider Pass” and one guy goes “hahaha what if it’s a giant spider. or like. a billion spiders. ghost spiders”. everyone else throws shit at them and is KNOCK IT OFF.
faramir is IT’S NOT A GIANT MAN EATING SPIDER OKAY
‘cause look there’s the unimaginable evil of mordor and then there’s the thought that you basically live next to a pass entirely of evil death spiders. i’d be in denial too.
Ok but if you knew there was a place called Spider Pass near you but you’d never been there I doubt you’d imagine literal spiders. You’d think it was because it was sort of squiggly and spidery. Or, you know, it’s pretty fucking reasonable to assume that Sauron would name the pass after the evil spider Ungoliant because basically why the fuck not, the whole land of Mordor is full of stuff like “Mount Doom” and the “Dark Tower” and the “Black Gate” and I think there’s “Fields of Sorrow” or something so really is “Spider Pass” much out of the ordinary here
I mean, let’s look at a modern day example for comparison. Out in Utah we’ve got Dead Horse Point, and like none of the tourists who go there expect to see a dead horse. “Oh, sure,” they think to themselves, “there was probably a horse who died here at some point, back in the old days.” And they keep getting surprised when they go there and find the literal horse carcass out in the parking lot by the visitor center.
And then they’re always all like, “You should clean that up, it’s unsanitary, how long has that been there,” but like, lady, I just work here, and what are we gonna do? If we clean it up, we’d have to come up with some other name, or find another dead horse.
So I’d totally get Faramir and Company not expecting a spider in Cirith Ungol. “Oh, sure, there probably was a spider there at some point, back in the old days” they doubtlessly thought to themselves. Fools.
