   “ what do you think the fairy queen is like? ”   an innocent question, asked just as innocently.  coco’s feet dangle from the seat as she helps herself to some food.   “ she must be nice, to invite us to such a lovely party.  i bet she’s pretty too.  do you think she likes dancing?  i’m not very good at it, but if it would make her happy, i’d do my best to make sure i join in at some point.  or maybe she just likes to see everyone together.  that’s nice too, it’s good to see people having fun… ”   she just keeps babbling on now, but she can’t help how giddy she feels about it all.

While a slight increase in confidence came with the mask, an increase in social prowess didn’t accompany it. It was kind of a relief that this girl she’d sat down beside — hardly finding it right to claim a whole table for herself — was so talkative. It couldn’t really last forever, though; not talking at all would still be a misstep.

“She must be really impressive to have a castle like this and so many admirers,” Passion replied brightly. “Admirers” was one way of referring to the pixies. “If she loves dancing, I’m sure she’d be out here with everyone... but she may be watching from somewhere, proud of this pretty place.” She was looking up as she said so, as if searching for a pair of eyes somewhere in the fantastical details.

for a latesummer night's soiree, setsuna will take on her ideal self passion’s long pink hair and wear a lovely red and black dress and heels. I mostly have serious passion icons so some of the normal purple-haired ones will probably have to do.

she’ll still make the most minor effort in disguising her identity by introducing herself as “passion”, which is not the weirdest name in the city!

“No. I quite prefer not to be touched.” 

He said that pretty fast. He’s still learning the whole humility and to maybe ask for help thing. He turns to walk away but then that last part-

“…What exactly do you mean by that?” 

“I understand.” Passion didn’t exactly expect an acceptance to begin with. “They aren’t everywhere, so you might be able to walk from one area to another without seeing one. But there are what seems like children made of the mist around here, and they might lead you into the dens of this forest’s monsters.”

Don’t touch their screen. Got it. She pats the netpup’s backside then wraps her fingers lightly around the dog’s tail. She doesn’t tug or anything and in fact doesn’t even hold the tail for too long either. 

The lady lifts a bottle and the Girl tilts her head. BUBBLES she says. The Girl is familiar with those because she takes bubble baths sometime. Those are her favorite time! Of COURSE she’s going to approach the woman a lot closer now. She wants to see the dogs chase the bubbles! She wants to join them, too!

It was great to see the girl so interested. It lessened Setsuna’s anxiety over her not saying anything, because it meant it probably wasn’t because of something she was doing wrong.

“Let’s see if this one’s in the mood,” she said, unscrewing the bottle’s cap and pulling out the glistening wand. She held it up about five centimeters from her mouth and blew.

They can both agree on that, for sure. Meizhen feels bad that Setsuna’s abilities were taken from her even if the same has happened to her. “Slowly we get back…” That’s something to look forward to, she thinks. STILL, the Stars shouldn’t be stealing what’s rightfully other people’s!

She falls silent, thinking and then, she nods. Oh, HUMANS how they can be so, so complicated and confusing. “Yes. Many things I don’t understand. You? What things you don’t understand humans do?” It’s funny because they can be so mysterious. They must think the same with those outside of their norm. 

“Get back...? Oh.” Setsuna shook her head with a wistful smile. “No, I don’t think I’ll ever get that back. That part of me is long gone. And that’s fine with me.”

Literally dead, but being non-specific about that was better with a new (potential) friend.

“Do you have some cool things you can do that the people here have taken?” she asked brightly. Special mermaid powers definitely piqued her curiosity. “I don’t understand all of the humans’ holidays, for one. There weren’t any when I was growing up, so things like this are new every time. At least... I think this “festival” is a holiday?”

-he looks her up and down, then quirks an eyebrow-

“…You?” 

-he doesn’t seem impressed-

She looked amused at the response, but not surprised. “I could pick you up and run pretty fast with you if necessary. Would you like to test it out?”

There’s people here so she expected to bump into someone, but not so soon! The Girl is about to hide behind the nearest bench, but when a little screen pup shows up and approaches the female without a care in the world to get some pets, the Girl doesn’t move to hide. Animals have very good instinct. She wonders if this one is also the same?

She points at the netpup then at the lady. Mm, she doesn’t LOOK mean. Will it be okay? The pup seems fine. In fact, the little tail is WAGGING. Her own tail follows suit, wagging side to side. 

She cautiously approaches. She wants to pet the doggy, too!

The significance of the little girl pointing between Setsuna and the dog was lost on her, but so were a lot of other things. She could roll with it.

“Um, as long as they’ll sit still, they like pets. They don’t like the screen being touched that much, but you're not going to get bitten.” She was rolling with the girl having a safety concern with the very unusual canines. 

She’ll have to remember that. Though it isn’t like Meizhen went around touching all sorts of bugs when she’s on land, but it’s still something to note, JUST in case! 

The mermaid stands beside Setsuna and shakes her head as she watches these little guys fly about, communicating to fellow friends.

“Not many.” She’s trying to think of some bugs that do come this far, but she usually spends her time underwater that she doesn’t notice. OH–

“But bug-like animals live under.” One day maybe she’ll show her!

“Meizhen. Different from human? How?”

“Wow. I’d like to see those, if I could.” Setsuna could easily invest in some goggles. She kind of suspected Meizhen was just talking about something like lobsters, but it wasn’t like she’d been up close to one of those either.

“It’s nice to meet you. Being here complicates things, but...” Setsuna thought for a moment, a loose fist held to her mouth. “Humans are from Earth, which is another world than this, and I’m from a different world than both. People from my world can have a special power, but I lost that before I came here.” ‘It was mercilessly taken from me’ would be more specific.

"That window is beautiful,” Setsuna remarked breathlessly, captured by the brilliant contrast in colors. “Is that a dove in the center?”

“Mmm hmm. It’s stained glass,” Inori explained, pleased to see her friend so amazed by it. “Christian churches usually have them, in all kinds of designs.”

They were alone among the pews, allowing them to speak freely without disturbing anyone else. Inori knew the building’s schedule like the back of her hand. “Is looking at them what you come here to do?” Setsuna asked her, and when she tore her eyes from the window, she could see Inori shake her head.

“I come here to attend church service on Sundays, and other times if I want to pray for something. I feel stronger when I speak with God. It’s not very common in Japan, but it’s the way I grew up.” She smiled brightly. “The glass does give it a nice atmosphere.”

“I don’t know if it would have the same effect on me, but if that doesn’t bother you, I’d like to know more.” Setsuna closed her eyes. “I want to understand everything I can about this world, and about you.”

“Sometimes you’re so direct, Setsuna...” Inori was embarrassed, but didn’t shy away from her. “I understand that the others don’t believe, so it’s okay if you don’t either. I’m still happy to share it with you. Would you like to come with me on Sunday?”

"Today is the Momozono Monthly Eating Out Day! So we thought we’d invite you along too.”

Setsuna was still so cold inside when Love dragged her along to eat dinner with the girl’s parents for the first time. The pleasant air surrounding them on the quaint restaurant patio and the warm exchanges between the Momozonos weren’t enough to thaw her heart right away. She felt worse, at first; who was she to think she could intrude on these happy strangers?

What they said around her started to go in one ear and out the other. It took Mrs. Momozono leading her out of her chair to get her to go anywhere, and even then she shuffled her feet.

“Hey, Setsuna?” the woman’s voice gripped Setsuna’s attention from where they’d stopped inside, looming over a long display case of desserts. “You must be confused, being dragged to a restaurant like this.” 

That was putting it optimistically. It suited someone that called herself Love’s mother.

“But look around. There as so many wonderful things, from the restaurant to the cakes.”

Reluctantly, Setsuna followed the instruction. She could see the primly dressed waiter skillfully carrying around a polished tray, the affectionate couple at the bar chatting over matching drinks, the smaller family sitting snugly together on one side of their table with a delighted little boy in the center, and the glazed fruits on the desserts glistening under the lights overhead. Paying even more attention without a second thought, she could catch the appetite-rousing scent of someone else’s carefully cooked meal, and hear the clinking of silverware and the grounding creak of the wooden floor as her heels adjusted...

...And the kind mother at her side just trying to see her smile, even if Setsuna was so wrapped up in herself and hardly spoke. “So why not enjoy the experience?”

She’s seen dogs before, though not many. Most of the dogs that came so far up the mountain were stray ones. She’s never seen dogs like these, though. Is she allowed to touch them? She doesn’t know who she’s looking for, but she’s looking around for permission to pet the netpups!

This looked like a great place to settle in for today. Feeling upbeat, Setsuna stopped and looked around at the scattered netpups with bright eyes. She had a bottle of non-toxic bubbles all ready to go (whether or not that was as much a concern with these guys as a good screen wipe after), but the lone little girl deserved her attention first.
