The Pitt Masterlist
Summary: Working in the Pitt isn't easy, especially when (Y/n) has diabetes and there isn't always time for lunch breaks. It's a good thing Jack is always looking out for her and checking her sugar levels.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tears prickled in (Y/n)'s eyes and started to burn down her features which were quickly heating up enough to rival the flames on a fire.
The room started to spin when she laid her cheek against the cold plastic and laid both arms over her thighs. It made (Y/n) feel like she was praying, like she was offering herself up to a God, being knelt on the floor like this and feeling as run down and unsettled as she did.
Her skin was clammy, coated in sweat and radiating heat whilst simultaneously feeling the odd shiver every few seconds.
Her nails raked up and down her thighs, trying in vain to give herself a different sensation to focus on other than the churning in her stomach and the dizziness in her head that made her feel that fainting was preferable to sitting here like this.
Part of her felt like staying slumped here for the rest of the night, it seemed easier than trying to hoist herself up and crawl back to bed again. And if she was going to be sick again, then staying knelt in front of the toilet might be her best option.
Shudders crawled down her skin when the bathroom door creaked and she nudged her cheek a little more into the seat so she could look to her right, well, as much as her blurring eyes would allow her.
Jack didn't look tired.
It made (Y/n) wonder if she had woken him, or if he had already been awake when she scrambled out of bed to rush into the bathroom so abruptly. There hadn't been time for her to turn and see whether he was asleep, laying awake staring at the ceiling or if he had even been on his phone. Reaching the bathroom in time had been the only thing on her mind.
He looked different. Usually at night was when Jack livened up. Insomnia meant he was perfect for the night shifts at the Pitt, but on his days off, trying to sleep was sometimes impossible.
Sometimes he could sleep for hours at a time or all the way through the night, but if he was in a restless mood he would lie awake for hours, reading or staring into oblivion with a thousand thoughts to keep him company.
Even with her eyes this unfocused and her mind feeling like scrambled egg, (Y/n) guessed that Jack had in fact been awake.
His hair wasn't as tousled as usual, curls mostly tamed and brushed back in the same way they had been before she went to sleep. There was no fog glazing over his eyes, no dark colours lining beneath his eyelids and no drowsiness about him. He wasn't even leaning on the doorframe like he was too tired to focus or understand.
If anything, Jack was stood there like it was the middle of the day and he had just come back from a long shift.
She knew for sure that he hadn't been asleep when she scrambled out of bed, because he had made quick work of attaching his prosthetic to his right limb. That would have taken him a bit longer to get it on and find his surroundings if he had been asleep.
He sighed as he padded into the room, walking unevenly because the shoe was still attached to his prosthetic which unbalanced him with his bare foot on the floor, making him lean slightly to the left.
His right hand found the wall, using it as leverage to ease himself down to his knees beside her. Once he was down, Jack smoothed his hand up and down (Y/n)'s back while his other hand planted down on his bare thigh.
Jack had been slightly stunned when, in the midst of his thoughts, the cover had been tossed over him and (Y/n) scrambled out of bed like there was a fire or the Pitt was crying out for help. It took him precisely three seconds to realise what the problem was, and he set about getting his prosthetic on so he could come and check whether she was alright.
"You alright?" His voice still had that gravelly tone to it which made (Y/n) shiver while she tried to lift her head.
(Y/n) let herself sink back on her heels, rather than slumping forwards and she lolled her head back on Jack's shoulder, praying that her head would stop spinning in circles soon.
A gratifying look shone in her eyes and her lips quirked up when Jack grabbed the mouthwash from the sink and held it out to her.
"Which one is it doll, sugar or sickness?"
(Y/n) took a few seconds to rinse her mouth with the mint mouthwash that left a bitter sting around her gums and made her throat burn like she was about to breathe fire. But it was better than the taste of bile in her mouth.
Her drowsy eyes managed to lift and look up at Jack and a glimmer of a smile pulled at her lips when she felt his free hand reach out to press against her temple. Checking her temperature, seeing whether she was starting to have a fever or beginning to sweat. Gaging whether or not he needed to start panicking and going into doctor mode or not.
"Sickness, I think." She hummed finally, and let her eyes close as her cheek pressed into his shoulder and she breathed in his scent like it was smelling salts bringing her back to consciousness again.
This felt like the new version of sickness she had to get used to, but it wasn't always easy to decipher.
Jack guessed the possibilities, he knew this was either morning sickness hitting (Y/n) in the middle of the night, she was actually suffering a sickness bug, or she was having a low blood sugar.
It had been common recently for (Y/n) to start having hypos during the night. It was why it was good that she had a Dexcom to monitor her blood sugar levels continuously throughout the day and night. Sometimes she wouldn't wake when her levels were dropping, but her phone would alert her and she could get up and get a drink of juice to try and spike them back to normal again.
Jack would of guessed that this was morning sickness, (Y/n) didn't usually have to run to be sick if she was having a hypo. But when she disappeared from the room he couldn't tell whether she was hurrying to be sick or to go and get something to eat or drink to feel better. Either way, he wanted to be sure so he knew how to act and how to help.
"Okay," he murmured and turned to press his lips against her temple in such a loving kiss that (Y/n) felt her heart palpitating in her chest.
A lovely sensation of pins and needles coursed through (Y/n)'s skin when Jack's free hand started to glide up and down her thigh as if he were giving her a distraction to take her mind off of the discomfort she was currently feeling. He always seemed to have the ability to set her skin on fire and it was a feeling she relished each time it happened. It was like magic to (Y/n).
"Think you're good to make it back to bed?" He didn't want to rush her, if she felt like she might throw up again then they would just sit around here and wait until she was ready to go to bed.
But Jack wanted to go back to their room so he could look on his phone and check her blood sugar levels, just to be safe.
With (Y/n) having a Dexcom to check her levels rather than constantly needing to prick her finger to check her blood, it meant she could have an app on her phone that alerted her with any warnings or changes. Letting her know when she should watch out, when she should get something to eat or take her insulin.
Jack had the app on his phone too, so if either of them were at work, he would know if she was alright or if she was having a bad day. Or if she were sleeping during the night and starting to have a hypo or have her levels rising above average. Then Jack would know and be able to help and wake her if necessary.
He wanted to go check his phone just to make sure whether or not she would need a drink of juice or a snack before trying to go back to sleep. Especially since she had just thrown up, meaning she was losing out on sustenance and carbohydrates.
He pressed his lips to her temple when she nodded and hummed, feeling alright enough to try and head back to bed again.
"Good. We don't have long before we gotta be up for work." Even as he spoke, it was clear Jack might be regretting agreeing to a day shift.
He didn't often do days, nights were easier on him and he preferred them. It didn't screw his sleep pattern when he struggled with sleeping anyway, and nights just fit him better. The pattern, the routine, the patients and the team he worked with, everything gelled. But there were times when he would pick up a few day shifts so he could work alongside (Y/n) and Robby or exchange a night for a day shift so he had some more time off with (Y/n).
He had picked up tomorrow's shift but he was regretting it only because he knew it was going to throw him to have a change in routine. But Robby was short handed and Jack was a sucker for trying to help.
Another reason Jack was now a bit worried, because if (Y/n) was feeling like this with morning sickness, going on shift tomorrow- or today, considering it was now three in the morning- might not do her much good. They were short staffed, everyone would be doing double their work load to make up for the lack of help and Jack didn't want (Y/n) doing too much if she wasn't feeling one hundred percent.
At least if he was on the shift with her, he would be able to keep an eye on her.
When he pushed up to his full height, Jack leant forward and slipped his hands beneath (Y/n)'s arms to help her up.
A yawn escaped (Y/n)'s lips as they turned to leave the bathroom and a coy grin pulled at her lips when she felt Jack's arms weave around her waist. His elbows pinned into her sides and his hands slid beneath her shirt and splayed out on her stomach as they walked in tandem back towards the bedroom.
A few more hours together, then they would be thrown into the chaos that was the Pitt.
"Animals, the lot of them." Jack's voice was coarse and gruff as he exited the trauma room, whipping off the face mask, goggles and gloves which he tossed into the allocated bins by his left side.
He fumbled to yank the apron off, hearing the loose strings tear and fray as he scrunched it into a tight ball and tossed it into the bin too.
Jack knew that the night shift tended to get a whole other variety of patients than the day staff. He usually got the drunks, the motor accidents, the trips and falls, and a Hell of a lot of sexual cases too. He always considered the night shift to be more alive with the variety of patients they got.
But he hadn't been expecting a group of idiots to be brought in after a brawl. It hadn't even been drunks fighting in a bar, they were all stone cold sober and had practically maimed one another.
The man Jack had just finished patching up was now ready for surgery to repair the last of the internal bleeding, since Jack had just removed his ruptured spleen. He was going to need a few tetnus jabs as well, considering one of the other men in the fight had tried to bite his ear off- thankfully he hadn't succeeded.
Jack reached his hand beneath the dispenser and took two loads of antibac, working it between his fingers and all the way down his wrists as he looked around the ER.
What was next? Would he be able to catch a mild case from the board and discharge a few people, or would another emergency roll through the doors and take his attention and time?
His eyes found the main screen and he scoured across it, looking for something to take his fancy or someone to snag his attention and shout out that they needed him. While he deciphered the different patients, Jack reached into his pocket and dug out his phone when it vibrated. Again.
Who was texting him? It would usually be (Y/n) sending the odd text when he was at work, but she was on shift too. There was no reason for her to message him, and Robby was somewhere in the ER too so it couldn't be him either.
A quiet huff left Jack's lips when he realised that it wasn't a text after all, it was an app alert.
*Glucose levels dropping. Increase input to keep above 4mmol/L *Glucose level: 3.8mmol/L *Glucose level: 3.6mmol/L
Each notification on Jack's phone had a red aura around the notification bubble. A warning. And as soon as Jack opened the Dexcom app on his phone, dozens of warnings were flashing on the screen and different links were showing up.
Advising to eat a few sweets. Get a drink of fruit juice which held lots of sugar. It was past lunch time, a proper meal would help boost glucose levels. Something had to be taken now. Levels were dropping fast. Hypoglycaemia was imminent and needed to be prevented.
"Damn it."
A look of thunder crossed Jack's face as he shoved his phone back in his pocket and glanced around the bustling ER floor.
He couldn't see her anywhere. The only person within reach was Santos; she would have to do for the time being. Jack curled his hand around her arm, gently pulling her to a stop as she was about to stride past him, Ipad in hand, clearly trying to get back to a patient.
"Hey kid, where's (Y/n)?"
"Uh, trauma two I think." Trinity pointed across the hall to the opposite trauma room. That was where Robby currently was, and she thought she'd heard (Y/n)'s voice in there too.
With a nod of his head, Jack released her arm and weaved around her, bypassing the desk so he could jog towards the opposite room.
Clearly (Y/n) didn't have a lot of lunch to sustain herself, and with how busy things were around here, she needed all the sugar and energy she could get. Most of the staff on the day shift should know by now that (Y/n) was diabetic. She was the exception to the food rule, that they had to grab something quick and convenient, mostly protein bars or sandwiches from the trolley.
Because (Y/n) was diabetic she had to control her diet and eat regularly, skipping meals made her worse and played up her blood sugar. So she was the only one who always ate around lunch time and then had a proper snack or sandwich or bite to eat around six before the shifts crossed over.
(Y/n) was the one who always had chocolates and sweets in her locker in case she needed a boost. And if anyone ever tried to complain that she managed to eat properly, Robby shut them down instantly. There were dire consequences if she didn't look after herself and her blood sugar, Robby knew that and he looked out for her.
For once, Jack was glad he was doing a day shift right now and he was also glad that he had (Y/n)'s Dexcom app on his phone too.
He didn't bother knocking on the glass door as he nudged it to one side and slipped behind the curtain. His hands stayed at his sides, not wanting to get too near the patient and become involved, he wasn't here to take over or lend a hand. They were capable enough already.
He saw (Y/n) stood at the head of the patient's bed, body doubled forward over the patient with her hands holding the patient's left shoulder in a certain position.
Robby seemed to be observing near to (Y/n)'s side, arms folded as he leaned to get a good look at the joint. And there was Mel, struggling to keep the patient's arm out straight and try to shimmy the joint back into place. Princess was in the background, keeping an eye on the vitals and stats and pushing some fluids and keeping control of the sedation.
"Hey, you good? What've you got?" Robby glanced over at Jack when he suddenly felt an extra pair of eyes watching them. He stepped back from (Y/n), about to snap off his gloves as he assumed Jack wanted a consult over a patient or had a situation he wanted to get under control.
"Actually I need (Y/n)." One arm crossed over his chest while he reached his other hand out to point towards her.
"Me?"
Surprise flooded (Y/n)'s face as she looked up sharply. Her eyes blinked hard a few times to get her vision back into focus until she was finally looking at her husband. Why did he need her specifically? What kind of patient did he have?
Although the more (Y/n) looked at him, the less convinced she was that he wanted a patient consult from her. The way he arched one brow and how his lips were pinched together in the middle made her take a sharp breath. It was like Jack was analysing her for something, as if he could sense something or thought she might be trying to hide something from him.
Her arms began to shake from tension and how she was trying to wriggle and help Mel shimmy this ball joint back into place, but it didn't seem to be working so well. The patient had really snapped this out of place. It wasn't often that patients came in with such injuries that a joint was not only dislocated, but protruding through the skin as well. In this case, the ball joint was protruding out from the armpit.
"Yeah you. Now." Jack's tone was curt and held no room for debate as he waved his hand as if to motion for (Y/n) to come and follow him.
"I- I can't yet, what about Princess?"
(Y/n)'s eyes desperately darted over to Princess who paused and turned, uncertainty in her eyes. She would help if she could, but she had a feeling that Jack wasn't going to accept her help if it was his wife who he wanted. And she certainly didn't want to get involved in a domestic. Princess preferred to witness and gossip about the drama, not be a part of it.
Shudders crawled through (Y/n)'s skin when she watched Jack shake his head and noticed his teeth sinking down into his bottom lip. He almost looked like he was about to smile before he huffed and stepped closer, his eyes now locked solely on (Y/n).
"She's not the one about to go into hypoglycaemia."
Robby's eyes darted down to (Y/n) just as Mel gasped with a tremendous effort and lodged the joint securely back into place.
The joint popped and squelched and the jolt sent (Y/n) stumbling back as she had been pulling on the patient's arm.
She felt Robby's hand on her lower back the moment she let go of the patient and found herself unable to level her sense of balance or keep upright. Robby gently ushered her a few steps away so that he could take her place beside Mel to check the joint movement and get the patient prepped to be moved out of here.
"We got this. Go." Robby ticked his head in Jack's direction to usher (Y/n) to go. He wasn't about to have her stay in here and try and continue prepping the patient if Jack was right and she was close to a hypo. And if she didn't move soon, Robby suspected Jack would come over here and carry her out.
With a weak nod, (Y/n) weaved around Mel and aimed for Jack, but she felt like her legs had gone hollow and numb. They were barely under her control and when Jack's hand curled around her arm, (Y/n) ended up wobbling and leaning into him a lot more than she would have liked.
His free hand moved to her lower back, holding her safely against him as they headed out the room.
Jack didn't like the way she wobbled as they walked out, or how she appeared to be shaking. And when he looked down, he realised (Y/n) had her eyes closed and her head bowed forward; either she felt faint or she was fighting the urge to be sick. He didn't like either possibility.
Making it to the break room seemed like too far of a trek and there wasn't anywhere to sit down at the lockers, so Jack made a beeline for the main desk. There were enough empty chairs there that (Y/n) could sit down and take a breather for a few minutes and if she was behind a desk, patients wouldn't be able to see her or become too nosey.
"Alright, take a seat doll."
(Y/n) shivered when Jack turned her around and carefully nudged her back to sit in one of the swivel chairs. Her knees trembled and her hands started to shake as she bound them together on her lap, keeping her eyes closed to try and make herself feel better. At least with them closed, she didn't have to think about or focus on the spots glimmering around the edges of her vision.
She felt cold shivers crawling down her skin when Jack's touch vanished, and (Y/n) fought the urge to call out for him and look up to see where he was going. But within a minute, he was back again.
Her eyes finally opened when she felt Jack's hand on her thigh, gently nudging her knees apart so that he could crouch down in front of her. Wedging himself in between her thighs so that her knees dug into his chest, as if that was exactly where he belonged and always wanted to be.
He didn't care if any of their colleagues happened to be watching, it wasn't as if this kind of PDA wasn't allowed, and he wasn't doing anything to make anyone blush.
His thumb grazed along her thigh as his other hand held out a glass of orange juice to her.
"Drink this," He coaxed, feeling a little bubble of relief when (Y/n) took it gratefully and actually took a few sips. Clearly she was both thirsty and knew she needed the sugar boost. He caught a hint of a smile on her lips when she realised he had also placed an open packet of sweets on the desk beside them.
(Y/n) wondered whose they were and who had left them open in the break room for Jack to come by and swindle them. Hopefully whoever it was wouldn't mind if (Y/n) pinched a few. She had enough chocolate in her locker to bargain and make a trade if not.
She tried to take a few more sips of juice, blinking rapidly to keep her eyes in some level of focus so she could keep looking down at Jack. This thumb coaxing along her thigh was a good grounding technique, keeping her here rather than letting her drift off into her mind. But the shaking wasn't subsiding, nor was the twisting feeling in her gut and the unease mounting within her chest.
"You skipped lunch, didn't you?"
It hadn't been intentional. All (Y/n) had been able to stomach for breakfast this morning had been a banana, and even that had sat heavy. By the time lunch rolled around, the ER was chaos and (Y/n) hadn't thought about disappearing for something to eat.
She was more focused on the patients, helping them and getting as many discharged as possible since they were swamped this morning. Not to mention she hadn't really felt hungry, just a mix between queasy and slightly peckish. Putting lunch off and forgetting about it had been much easier than she anticipated.
She couldn't quite lock eyes with Jack anymore, focusing instead on the low neckline of his scrubs as she spoke. "It's been chaos… didn't get a break to have something."
"I told you, just go. If someone collars you, just grab me or Robby. You'll become a patient if you don't."
He didn't know how many times he had tried to tell (Y/n) just to go ahead and get something to eat, that he or Robby would deal with anyone if they tried to tell her to stop and help them on a case instead. They would deal with any snide remarks or comments if they happened.
A quiet uttering of "You can go help," passed (Y/n)'s lips when she heard Dana requesting help in room seven.
Jack could go and lend a hand while (Y/n) tried to get her sugars up again, she wouldn't want the ER to be even more short-handed because she was stealing Jack's attention away from patients who probably needed him more. (Y/n) felt like she had already caused enough of a fuss, she didn't want to be an even bigger problem.
But when she looked down at Jack, she got that specific look from him with one brow arched and his lips pressed into a thin line, his jaw twitching and tightening as he shook his head.
"Not until those levels rise."
He wasn't about to head off to another patient when (Y/n) would be at the forefront of his mind. Distractions weren't good in their line of work and right now, (Y/n) was a huge distraction to Jack. He was staying here with her until he was sure her glucose levels were back to where they should be and he knew his wife was feeling better.
His hand continued to glide over her thigh, head tilted to one side as he watched her. Silently searching for the little signs that would show and prove to him that she was feeling better, that she was starting to get somewhat back to normal again.
It was clear that (Y/n) was suffering a headache; the way she kept trying to close her eyes and rub at her temple gave it away.
Jack wasn't too pleased when she set the glass down on the desk, she hadn't had very much to drink and if she stopped then her levels weren't going to boost very much by themselves.
But his frame tensed and pins and needles flooded his skin when (Y/n)'s hand suddenly pressed down against his shoulder with a fierce grip that was almost bruising. Her body pushed forward and for a second, Jack thought she was going to fall or even launch herself off the chair and into his arms. He braced his hand from her thigh to her hip instead but (Y/n) didn't fall.
She doubled forwards, holding his shoulder like a leaning post as she threw up the juice with a guttural cough.
Her sugar levels definitely weren't going to get any better if she couldn't keep the food and drink in her system long enough to absorb it.
A low groan rumbled in Jack's throat and when (Y/n) shakily leant back in the chair, he straightened up in front of her. Reaching out, he carefully took hold of her chin so he could tilt her head back rather than her hanging her head down as if in shame.
His eyes roamed her frame, but (Y/n) could barely manage to keep her eyes open. She was trembling so much the wheels of the chair were scraping against the floor. There was a light coating of sweat on her skin and a discolouring starting on her lips.
"Oh baby," He uttered defeatedly, hanging his head down for a second before he took a deep breath and looked over his shoulder. "Robby, hey brother I need my bag from my locker."
It took one look in Jack's direction for Robby to give a thumbs up and jog across the ER floor, aiming for the corridor that led to the lockers.
He could see the state (Y/n) was in, and Robby had a feeling he knew what was in Jack's bag that he needed for (Y/n) right now. It was a good thing that Robby knew Jack's locker combination.
Not more than a minute later and Jack's backpack was slumped down at his side and Robby was stood with one hip slanted against the desk and his arms folded over his chest. A clear look of contemplation in his eyes as he observed the couple, unsure whether or not (Y/n) was about to become one of their newest patients rather than one of their nurses.
Jack unzipped the front pocket of the bag, the part he rarely ever used because it was his 'spare section'. The compartment where he shoved a few rainy day essentials. Plasters, creams, loose change, but most importantly, he had glucose gel sachets in there for emergencies just like this.
When the silver sachet came into view, Jack snatched it up, tore it open with his teeth and pushed up from his knees so he was crouched with his weight leaning back on his heels. Making him a little bit taller than (Y/n)'s slumped frame in the chair.
"Eyes on me." His tone was sharp and he tapped his fingers against (Y/n)'s cheek to get her attention. "Take this for me baby."
He pressed the sachet to her lips, noting the glazed, faraway look in her eyes when she managed to open them. Her cheek twitched in grimace at the sharp tang that came with the gel when Jack squeezed it onto her tongue. It was either the gel or the glucose powder- which was probably also in his bag- but this was preferable and a bit quicker than rubbing the powder on the inside of her cheek. That was better for if (Y/n) passed out.
Lolling her head forwards, (Y/n) closed her eyes and tried to breathe deeply to reset her system. Her trembling hands reached out to curl around Jack's wrists, thankful he hadn't decided to go and help Dana after all. She tried to cling to his wrists, holding tight in an attempt to stop the trembling and give herself something to focus on.
She could feel Jack's hands smoothing up and down her thighs in long strokes, causing her arms to move as well and it somehow made the trembling less noticeable.
All the noises seemed to become background static; the little bickerings, the clattering of instruments, the composed, controlled orders being thrown around the trauma rooms. Even the squeaky wheels on the beds and the clicking of the doors opening and closing, it all faded into one long droning noise that (Y/n) couldn't focus on.
It couldn't have been more than two or three minutes that passed before (Y/n) hummed when she felt Jack's touch beneath her chin. He angled her head back, causing her eyes to open just in time to see that he had torn open another glucose sachet and was holding it to her lips again. The more gel they got into her system, the quicker her blood sugar would rise and the less likely it was to have to admit (Y/n) into a room as a patient for a few hours.
There were no more stars twinkling in the corners of her vision anymore, which was an improvement. And the cold sweat that had broken out on her skin no longer felt so brasen and constricting. She didn't feel like she was about to melt into a puddle or as if she had been submerged into a bucket of ice water.
(Y/n)'s attention shifted to Robby when his hand gently found her shoulder and gave a soft squeeze.
"I think you're done for the day."
Worry lines creased her temple and she shook her head, despite the storm that was still ebbing away at the back of her mind. Pointing down, (Y/n) signalled to Jack's phone that he had put on the floor by his right foot so he could see her levels and check whether they were dropping any further or starting to climb bac up.
"B- it's rising," Her throat felt unusually dry, as if her skin was starting to crack and splinter on the inside.
She could see the Dexcom app open on Jack's phone, and her levels had risen 0.2, that meant they were starting to climb back up. She just needed a few minutes for them to keep going and to get something little to eat to keep herself sustained. Then she would be alright to finish off the rest of her shift.
The shake of Robby's head made her stomach churn and her heart deflate. Combined with the way Jack was now looking up at her, as if she had suggested cutting corners or lying on a patient's chart, it had (Y/n) looking down at her hands to avoid their gazes.
"You've been sick, you know I can't have you on shift any longer. Protocol, you should head home."
"I'm not sick." (Y/n) grumbled, though her tone was defeated as she knew she wasn't going to win this argument against the pair of them.
She reached out and snagged one of the gummy sweets from the open packet Jack had snatched from the break room. The sugar coating fizzled on her tongue almost the same as the glucose gel had, but she didn't bother chewing the sweet, just letting it dissolve. Eating and drinking too much after just being sick wasn't going to help, but one or two sweets very slowly might just help her feel a bit better.
(Y/n) was starting to feel more like herself again. Her hands found Jack's shoulders as she pushed up from the chair, testing boundaries to see whether or not she could hold herself up without her legs trembling and giving way on her.
"You should still head home, you're not eating and your levels are all over the place." Jack's voice was softer, more mellow than before and his hand moved to press against the dip of her lower back as he stood beside her.
Staying here and pushing through all this madness was only going to deplete her energy levels again and if she wasn't eating or drinking properly then (Y/n) was going to burn herself out. This would only happen again; it was better to play it safe and have her go home and rest.
He pressed a chaste kiss to her cheek when she still wouldn't look at him. They both knew there was another reason why Jack was suggesting she go home.
(Y/n) almost jumped when she felt someone leaning around her from behind, and suddenly a steaming mug of coffee was placed on the desk to her left, right beneath her nose.
Dana smiled warmly and patted (Y/n)'s arm as she nodded at the cup. "Three sugars, should perk you up hun."
The smell flooded (Y/n)'s nose and made her stomach twist and churn immediately. She nudged the cup with the back of her hand, pushing it further away from her, almost as if she were offering it to Robby instead as she moved it in his direction. Hoping that a few inches of space would stop the strong aroma from making her throw up.
There wasn't a lot of milk in the coffee, usually how (Y/n) drank them, but that only made the aroma stronger. Coffee had a repellent effect on (Y/n) at the moment, not to mention it was something she was trying to avoid because a lot of coffee during a pregnancy wasn't a good idea either.
"And you're telling me you're not sick?" Robby deadpanned with an arched brow as he looked between (Y/n) and the cup.
Glancing up to her left, (Y/n) locked eyes with Jack who was already sighing, his fingers digging into her scrubs against her back as they shared a contemplating, silent debate before they both seemed to give in.
"Morning sickness and skipped meals, not the best combination for a diabetic." Jack smoothed his hand up and down (Y/n)'s lower back, ending the sentence with a kiss to her temple before he looked down at her. "But you do need to go home; that's non-negotiable."
