Could you write something about how Yuuri is NOT selfish? (I am so TIRED :/.)
So am I!
Where did this perception even come from and why did it get so popular? Was it this?
Episode 12 ruins everything once again.
Ok putting aside my feelings on how lacking I find the writing in this episode, letâs delve into this. He should have talked properly to Victor here, yes. But heâs choosing to retire for an entirely selfless reason. Victor perceives it as selfishness because he doesnât know whatâs going on (and because Yuuri could have gone about his announcement better tbh). Even then, Victor says he didnât expect Yuuri to be selfish! The person who has been living with Yuuri 24/7 for eight months never expected him to be selfish!Â
Letâs also remember the reason Yuuri wants to retire at this point specifically is because he feels like he is hurting Victor and holding him back.Â
Let me repeat that.
Yuuri was willing to sacrifice his career, his dream, and the thing he loves doing the most in the world, for Victorâs sake.
Another shining moment of Yuuri âdangerously selflessâ Katsuki was this.
Yuuri doesnât hesitate for even a second to tell Victor to go back to Japan and be with Makkachin. Yuuri is well aware of how it will be without Victor, heâs putting himself at a disadvantage in a decisive competition because he loves Victor and cares about his feelings above all else, including himself. There was nothing that could be done for Makkachin by either of them, Victor leaving actually changes nothing about Makkachinâs situation, but Yuuri still wants him to go because it means something for Victor and because Yuuri doesnât want Victor to go through the same pain and regret he went through with Vicchan.
Other moments of Yuuri demonstrating heâs not a selfish or petty person include:
His entire relationship with Yurio, who, might I remind you, treats Yuuri terribly for most of the series, and yet Yuuri continuously supports him, admires him, and sincerely cheers for him
Feeling guilty over coming home during a busy time
Feeling guilty over not keeping in touch with his friends
Being afraid to contact that conservatory student because heâs afraid he hurt her feelings for not using her music
Being afraid to contact Celestino because he feels he wronged him
Feeling like a burden to everyone around him
Feeling like a burden to the sport of figure skating itself
Sincerely cheering for Chris, who was also kind of a jerk to YuuriÂ
Admiring and empathising with JJ during his breakdown
What he chose for his seasonâs theme and why
A lot of Yuuriâs actions that people point out as selfish are motivated by anxiety, crippling guilt and low-self confidence and self-esteem. He is his own antagonist. A very simple and straight-forward example of this is episode 4.
Yuuri has an outburst in front of Victor and panics, and consequently starts avoiding him because heâs terrified of showing emotional vulnerability and what he perceives to be weakness to people, as he explains later at the beach. Obviously, Victor is not happy that Yuuri is avoiding him, but I feel that people tend to miss/ignore how Yuuriâs actions were making him feel.
If anything, Yuuri isnât selfish enough. As I wrote before, a huge part of Yuuriâs character arc is about him learning to express and pursue his desires. This is present in many parts of his narrative, from the thematically significant assignment of Eros, to Yuuri admitting to himself for the first time that he wanted to win gold at last yearâs GPF, to realising that heâs not a burden to others and doesnât have to fight his battles alone nor does he have to push people away, to learning that he is âenoughâ.
You canât accuse a character of being selfish when a huge part of that characterâs arc is for him to learn that heâs allowed to want things for himself and that he is deserving of the things and people he loves!Â

If someone asks you if your âa Gay/Lesbian/etcâ in That Toneâ˘, its okay to say no, especially if saying yes is potentially endangering to you and puts you at risk for ridicule and humiliation.
Youâre not denying yourself or misrepresenting the community, youâre protecting yourself and thatâs your number one priority.
Donât feel guilty for keeping yourself safe.

One thing I really like about BNHA is the constant acknowledgement of the fact that the shonen manga âI can do anything if I just push myself hard enough and refuse to ever rest or back downâ mindset is incredibly self destructive.
Like. All Might is falling apart, physically. Midoriya, at just 15, has destroyed his body so many times that he risks paralysis every time he channels his power through his arms. Iida has severe nerve damage in one hand. And literally no one who cares about them is pretending that this is an acceptable way to be. Even the resident magic cure-all, Recovery Girl, canât do enough to keep up with the damage they put themselves through, and in Midoriyaâs case has threatened to stop healing him so as not to enable his self-destructive tendencies.
Plus, a lot of their character development revolves around learning NOT to be like that. Iida spends several arcs after his fight with Stain trying to atone for the trouble his recklessnes caused and trying to prevent Midoriya from getting into the same type of trouble. All Might has to learn to live as a civilian after he gives his power to Midoriya and then CONTINUES to push his body so far that he pretty much breaks. Midoriya develops a new fighting style, reevaulates his tendency to rush in, and learns to ask for help from the Support department in order to keep from destroying himself in the same way.
Itâs honestly refreshing; I was a little sick of the Bleach-style âthe hero can loose twice his weight in blood and be totally fine an episode laterâ type of storytelling.
AN ACTUAL GOOD SUPPORTING MAN
EAT SHIT ROSS
I think back to all the men in the media who undermined their girlfriendsâ or wivesâ careers out of their own insecurities. And how many times the woman was framed in the wrong for objecting to this behavior. (Riley from BtVS comes to mind right now, for a start.)Â
I want more relationships like this one in the media. More where the man is supportive and happy for his partner, rather than insecure and jealous.Â
More actually healthy relationships, rather than unhealthy ones masquerading as healthy.Â
