Back in january, my VSMP fan server received a bunch of sus joins, someone had reported the server to his mods for "boundary breaking".

They then started dming me saying they were taking a list of the people in the server and banning anyone in it from Pyro's discord because they disagreed with the content allowed.

I then had to spend 2 hours running damage control and figuring out who it was that did it while locking the server down for the members safety against new joins and banning the people who joined while members panicked thinking their privacy was invaded, which it was.

Since it was a personal experience i dont have links for this one, but here's some recent harassment sc in this post that breaks down the statements some.

people should be free to write, draw, create, etc whatever they want. and if the ccs find it and don't like it, they can block, and move on. just like if I see a fic on ao3 that I don't like while browsing a ship tag, I ignore it. If I see more by the same author, I block the author and keep scrolling.

bottom line is: ccs can't control you, so do whatever you want. but if you are knowingly breaking their boundaries, be prepared to face the consequences. (getting blocked/banned from their spaces) And if someone is harassing you for the type of art you make, report them, block them, maybe tell your friends who make the same kinds of things to be wary of them, and keep doing what you love.

twitter users really are just obsessed with the idea that the creators being IN fanspaces is normal and should be encouraged and that's just absolutely insane to me

like no, actually, i want to be able to look at characters and make shit up without the possibility of them looking over my shoulder judging if i should be shot for making them uncomfortable or not. that's not and it never has been what fanspaces are supposed to be

"oh but make a private discord" how, pray tell, is anyone supposed to find people who are also interested in these things if apparently the mere implication that something breaking said boundary exists is offence enough for it to be "reported"? literally tell me how

"oh but it was only about his mods finding people and banning them" WHY is he having people seek out the thing he supposedly doesnt like and BRING IT TO HIM. he implied his mods could get on all places, does that mean ALSO peivate spaces, meaning that people cant even feel comfortable making private spaces completely separate from them and other fans because now they have to be worried someone that claims to enjoy the same as them is now gonna rat them out?

do you really think other fans arent goint to feel like they would be "better" or like they would be "correct to" seek out this people and attempt to push them out of the fandom space, EVEN if they are trying to do so privately? will those fans BELIEVE people when they claim "oh it's platonic" about their fanworks? or will the squint their eyes and point at them as a horrible dreadful shipper because the fanart had the characters 3 pixels too close?

and FANS are doing all of THAT ^ over the hypothetical approval of a random person THEY DONT KNOW, so they feel comfortable in what should be A SPACE FOR THEM -and then getting MAD when they find out that actually other fans DONT want the creators here and actually find it uncomfortable

creators need to learn to use the block button. boundaries does not mean you get to impose anything on other people. it means you are setting a boundary where you will disengage or block someone if they engage in certain behavior. you are the one looking up fan content. fan works are not for you. they are for other fans. you can simply choose to not seek it out. learn to block tags.

i say this all as i was personally responsible for a sizable chunk of the “2019 mcytblr drama” that everyone always talks about. i was a dumb teenager who thought it was my duty as a fan to “protect” my favorite creators. but no, creators are grown adults. if you need random teenagers to police what other people on the internet do instead of curating your own feeds, something is seriously wrong.

"It was just a joke". I think by now we should all be aware that this isn't a great response to anything. Considering the sheer amount of people both pro and against these "creator boundaries" that have not taken it as a joke, I think it's fair to say that that was a complete failure and was not at all clear. If you want to do a serious stream, you should probably steer away from the awful jokes. Also, I don't think ccs should joke about harassing people, especially when that is a thing that has happened previously.

Edit: I've now seen people saying "Oh, but Pyro just misspoke and really meant that the mods would see things." I take multiple issues with this claim: that 'misspeaking' has caused people to get harassed; this is at least the third interpretation I've seen of what Pyro said and this lack of clarity is a large issue; accidentally threatening your fans is still a bad thing; Pyro's mods are an issue in and of themself with their past behaviour. It should also be noted that I haven't seen a single person saying this provide proof that they did misspeak.

1) Make sure shipping fics are appropriately labelled.

2) Ignore things with those labels

3) If you have problems with 1 or 2 which are things you can control, do not post a diatribe on the main tag telling people that they are gross and disgusting and they should leave the main tag, because that is gross and disgusting.  

1. QPRs and aspec identities are commonly misunderstood. A CC may not know the difference.

2. This is also a paradox: by refering to your ships as a QPR, you insinuate that they are not a "real" relationship because there is no romantic or sexual attraction involved. This is strictly not true. It is a relationship: you are still shipping. Consider how aspecs feel about this. As an alloaro, I find this offensive as well. Start dismantling amatonormativity.

3. Even if we disregard that, this issue has come up before. Specifically during the height of the DSMP and Life series. When a post was called a QPR and artists insisted that was the intention, it was still seen as alloallo shipping. You will be misunderstood. It will happen. Anything that is "too romantic" will be flagged as a romantic ship. Yes, even if you say that a kiss is platonic (which it can be, don't start with me), or holding hands, or laying in bed together: if the CC thinks it is bad, it will get flagged.

4. Related to that, this is why we use (x)duo and ship nicknames. These blurred over time when we realised the CCs do not engage with it much, so you see it interchangeably now. If you really want to avoid CCs getting mad at you, agree on a new tag to use. I'd recommend those who want to respect the ship boundary to get involved too, simply so they don't get flagged by the CC for completely innocent intentions they have.

Avid and I hadn't been friends in about half a year following some dispute over Merch and prices. I gave him a quote for emotes, he complained about it being to high, haggled me down and still "asked" if I had a bulk discount since another artist he was working with also offered him one and we were friends after all. I told him if the price was an issue he could commission another artist, he refused and we went forward with the commission at the reduced price. This hasn't been the first time money became an issue working together. He had a habit of only paying through goods and services (it deducts a service fee from my end, not his- resulting in incomplete payments for me) or simply not paying the full amount. He has never payed me a licence fee for any of my merch designs and instead promised me 50% of his sales- I have not seen a payment of this. Meanwhile he told me I was financially taking advantage of him. (Never mentioning the free gifts, logos and other stuff I had done free of charge)

When he messaged me, ending our friendship, following the emote situation, he said things to me that made me doubt every relationship I had with my friends. I was made to believe that everybody hated me, that he was the only one I had left and that he was foolish for believing in me. I was crushed, heartbroken and scared.

Meanwhile he lied to others about me in order to isolate me further. The tamest of these lies being that we were still friends and that he just wasn't working with me anymore. However the things I heard about me afterwards were horrible and made me seriously sick to my stomach. Not only did he claim that I called him selfish amongst other things after he confided in me with suicidal thoughts, apparently never made him feel better in these situations despite being his personal therapists and most horrifyingly of all he fabricated very serious rpe allegations against me. This last part I cannot take lightly as I myself have been a victim of rpe/sexual ab#se in the past. Avid knew how much this still effected me to this day- he could have chosen any other lie but this one is unforgivable in my eyes. Both the supposed victim and I were mortified when we were told about this. I hope I don't have to say this but I will to cover everything: I did in fact never do anything of the sorts and am appalled by this.

Being isolated, having all my relationships in doubt and overall everything happening made me consider a lot of things. This was a truly dark time in my life. I considered deleting all my socials, videos and my Twitch and everything Rubyco, therefore being "gone for good" and sadly it went as far as considering truly ending it all. I do have amazing friends and even in these moments I wasn't ever alone, I will never be able to thank all of them enough for what they did for me. I am better now, though still battling with the programmed feeling of loneliness and distrust that had been installed so long ago.

Avid and I had been friends for years and it is hard to see this new version of him. I still want to believe that the guy I became friends with is still in there but after everything that came to light these past days and even months- I have to accept that this version of him is gone.

I haven't gone over Marm in this as we hadn't been as close as people could have thought. At some point it was impossible getting her or Avid alone since they would always stick together, attached at the hip. Avid also replaced me with her for the Friday streams after they got together, which I admittedly got a little salty over. Marm has lashed out over small disagreement or "callouts" before, making me feel like I was the bad guy in every one of them. After a while she stopped talking to me as a whole except for SBK interactions we couldn't avoid.

I was somewhat of a personal therapist/social worker for both of them, worrying about them, working with them and at some point even having scheduled meetings with them, yet I didn't see this side of them for way too long. I am not the only person he affected negatively. I am not the only person he attacked and definitely am not alone in having your entire character and story misconstrued, lied about and manipulated to fit his narrative of being a victim. I wish everyone that was affected by his actions to be able to heal from this. I know I have gotten closer to some people despite, no probably because, of this and they are all such wonderful and strong people.
