The woman who tricked me into “lending” her money and giving her rides until eventually she stole my purse out of my car while I was giving her a ride, and gloated about it because I was pregnant and had a toddler strapped into a car seat and couldn’t chase after her? She’s dead now, probably of an overdose. Addicts have much bigger problems than the ways they make you suffer.

I had a friend once who went into the hospital for Crohn’s disease. Afterward, he still suffered pain. He was told he’d become inadvertently addicted to the painkillers they gave him in the hospital. Then, despite the fact that he had never been given a choice about getting those painkillers, they treated him like a dirty drug-seeking junkie and made him go to rehab before they’d let him have pain medication. Then it turned out that his pain wasn’t addiction symptoms at all; they’d missed that his guts were essentially glued to each other with clots and lesions. He had serious medical problems that they overlooked in favor of demonizing him for being a “druggie” because they thought that the medical profession had accidentally inflicted a physical addiction on him without his control or consent.

Treating drug addicts like they are bad people just because they are addicted to drugs is ableist, classist, and ends up harming people who aren’t drug addicts.
