jesus christ superstar bravely asks the question: what if you and your homoerotic best friend in occupied judea built a radical leftist political movement together based on principles you hold dear but as the movement grows more followers join who seem less committed to its message and more interested in your homoerotic bestie as a charismatic leader, and then they even start saying some crazy shit about him being the son of god, and you try to ask him about it because surely he doesn't think that's true and he's weirdly noncommittal like "oh, yknow, if that's what they think who am i to tell them no, it brings more people to the movement anyways," and you're like i guess... but then this son of god stuff gets really serious and people are calling him a king too, and you're like this is gonna end badly if the romans catch wind of it, so you try to tell him to drop the son of god stuff but at this point he's so intensely beloved you can't even have a private conversation with him, and you start to think is he just drunk on his own power, because now he's barely staying on message and even actively contradicting your founding principles--not only that but he starts getting weirdly morbid, talking about his death coming soon and limited time on earth, etc. he seems unwell and frankly irresponsible, randomly lashing out in anger and filled with bitterness towards the followers he's cultivated, and towards you, too, and meanwhile your volatile homoerotic bestie is being hounded by tens of thousands of maniac zealots urging him towards open war with rome, and you're really the only one capable of stopping it, all you have to do is turn him in to the pharisees, but every time you think about it it makes you sweat because you could swear he already knows you're going to do it, he almost seems to want you to do it yet he hates you for it too, but someone needs to keep him from bringing the full might of rome down on the jews (again), so what if he hates you, is he even the person you thought he was anymore, regardless he could never love you the way you love him, and you need to do this, you have to do this, it's the only way. Would that be fucked up or what?
also it is kind of funny that jesus was like "ONE of u will betray me" but doesn't say who. why was he being messy
actually yeah i agree the jesus christ superstar musical is blasphemous that's also what makes it so enjoyable
the thing abt alw is that he is like not "good" by whatever critical metric but his streak of musicals between the 70s - 80s all have extremely horny premises and moments that could be p0rnos in themselves and i feel like this is something that is sorely lacking in other musicals for the most part

Judas, must you betray me with a kiss?
Jesus Christ and Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar: Live Arena Tour
scarf/keffiyeh change
good partners
(aaron finley jesus & Michael lee judas)
the occupy movement productions from early 2010s my beloveds!!!
guess it’s my jcs obsession era back again
Jesus Christ Superstar versions (that are on Letterboxd) ranked on homoeroticism alone
So this week I got COVID right before I was supposed to go see JCS at the Hollywood Bowl, and to cope I've been mainlining JCS productions for the past three days. I've watched 16 versions - 10 of them start to finish and 6 of them skipping certain songs I was tired of - from 10 different countries and in 4 different languages. So obviously I had to make a ranked list. And look, there are plenty of valid ways to rank JCS versions - best overall production, best Judas (for sure the most important metric), best Jesus (aka best performance of Gethsemane), how much Ciaphas' voice vibrates your whole body if you turn the volume all the way up, just to name a few - but honestly a lot of those would be tough decisions for me. Ranking it by homoerotic* energy between Jesus and Judas, though? That's a no brainer.
(*I should also clarify that "homoerotic" felt like the easiest word to use, but what I mean is "they are in love" energy. I don't give a shit whether it's sexy, I care about the tragic yearning)
1) Swedish Arena Tour - Before watching this, if you'd asked me if it was possible for a JCS to be too homoerotic, I would have laughed. Now, though, I know it can be done. To be clear, this is a delight to watch, but it's so gay that the plot reads (to me at least) as being about scorned-lover Judas betraying Jesus purely because Jesus starts cheating with Mary right in front of Judas' face, and that sort of takes away from some of the story's impact for me. I should also clarify, though, that I have no issue with them full-on kissing on the mouth. That's a great choice. It's just too gay before then. Like, I want that kiss to feel like a gay dam finally breaking, not one last kiss between two people who have obviously been banging for years. But anyway, being gay is truly the main thing this version has going for it, so it's a no-brainer for top of the list and I'd recommend it for that alone. (I will add, however, that this Jesus is bonkers and I don't get him at all. It's not what this list is about, but it needed saying.)
2) 2000 Great Performances - This is what it looks like when JCS is the perfect amount of homoerotic. It's certainly far from a flawless production, and I will agree with the common critique that Jérôme Pradon's voice can't always meet the demands of Judas. But what he lacks in vocal chops he more than makes up in raw emotion, and all of that emotion is poured into gay yearning for Jesus. It's beautiful. The kiss here breaks my heart into a thousand pieces, it's probably my favorite take on this scene. The way they cling to each other. The way Jesus can't stop reaching for him every time they're near each other after the arrest and during Superstar. Stunning. Judas' Death is probably where the vocal struggle is most pronounced, and that's a shame, because the sopping wet miserable energy Pradon brings to it is really something else. Also unrelatedly, all their friends look like they could be extras in Queer as Folk (US), and Judas shows back up for Superstar serving absolute cunt and channeling the Dean in Community dressed as Satan holding a chainsaw and shouting "GAY MARRIAGE!" so both those factors definitely amp up the queer vibes.
3) 2012 Live Arena Tour - Tim Minchin absolutely slays in this (definitely my second favorite Judas after the OG), and I'm very sorry to him that they autotuned him without asking, he did not need that. It's not my favorite Jesus if I'm being honest, but he does pull off a good Gethsemane. Anyway, the love this Judas has for Jesus is palpable, and there are a lot of really good moments where they sell it. While a lot of productions struggle with what to do when the apostles are singing "look at all my trials and tribulations" before Jaded Mandarin, this is one of the only ones that uses that as a moment for Judas and Jesus to really emote, and sell me on the fact that they have unfinished emotional baggage that absolutely has to be aired out before Judas can really walk away. Shortly after, they have one of my favorite takes on the kiss, especially in way Jesus pushes him away but then immediately pulls him back in. Gorgeous. And Tim's performance of Judas' death here guts me like no other, particularly on the line "does he care for me?" One thing I'll note that firmly puts this below the top two is that Jesus himself brings a little bit less of the queer energy compared to those two productions and compared to Judas, but it's still definitely there. Oh, but also gets bonus points for having both Judas and Mary have white-people dreads. Like, can you imagine being Judas and that's the woman Jesus chooses over you??? Life ruining. You don't recover from that.
4) 1973 Film - While this version lacks the more overt homoerotic edge that the top three picks have, I still think there's a deeply compelling dynamic between Jesus and Judas in this film that just has so much packed into every little interaction. One thing I've always loved about the movie compared to other versions I've seen is how much raw emotion Carl Anderson brings right off the bat in Heaven On Their Minds, and even though he and Jesus don't directly interact in the number, the way he's looking at him from a distance and pleading does a lot of ground work for getting the audience to buy into this relationship - this is someone who cares deeply for Jesus and is clearly devastated at the direction he sees things going. Another thing that helps the homoerotic vibe in this one is the deeply jealous looks Judas has about Mary literally all the time. Like, my guy doesn't just look annoyed or judgmental, like some others do. No, he looks hurt. Another thing I love about this version, that's especially distinct from a lot of other productions on this list, is how distant and unknowable Neeley's Jesus is. It gives the relationship a really specific dynamic where you can really understand how painful it would be to love someone who is loved by so many, and who can only give you so much in return. Another stand-out moment for me in this one is the face-touch at the very end of Jaded Mandarin, which I think beautifully captures the whole range of emotions Judas is feeling. But then there's also Jesus - the fact that he goes to Judas when no other version has him do that, the moments where he does reach out, the face he makes as Judas runs away. These moments are understated and beautiful. The kiss in this version may not have the intensity of some others, but the extreme close up on it let's us feel the tenderness and emotion behind it. And it almost goes without saying, but Judas' I Don't Know How to Love Him is devastating, and in this version it feels like it's just giving voice to the emotion that's been behind countless looks he's given Jesus throughout the movie. So while you could definitely watch this movie and not get a specifically gay vibe (like, if you're straight, presumably), I do feel that these characters as portrayed here have such a palpable love it breaks your heart. Honestly this one is pretty much a tie with the Minchin version.
5) 1992 Australian Production - Alright, this is where there is a very steep dropoff in gay energy. Are you familiar with the TV show The Good Place? If not, let me explain the character Mindy St. Clare to you: basically she is a woman who was a piece of garbage in life, but one day she got super coked up, impulsively did one insanely philanthropic thing, and immediately died. Because of this, she goes to a medium place when she dies rather than the good or bad place, because it all sort of averaged out. This is the Mindy St. Clare of JCS productions. For the most part, it is profoundly un-homoerotic, but then it does something intensely gay in the 11th hour and it makes it kind of hard to quantify the overall queerness of the vibe. It's cavernous staging allows them to keep a pretty healthy no-homo distance between Jesus and Judas most of the time. Jesus (who has a good voice for the role but makes up for it by being wrong in every other possible way) is the straightest-reading Jesus I've ever seen, perhaps due to his age and styling and horny vibe with Mary. Judas is clad in leather pants, a vest, and no shirt, which is the sort of ensemble that's either aggressively gay or aggressively straight and, while I flip flopped a bit, I sort of land on the latter for him. The kiss is so minimal and so obscured in the filming that there legitimately might not be one. Overall, nothing gay about this production at all. Except for how someone seems to have taken a 1992-shaped sledgehammer to the orchestration of this production and that includes a lot of added percussion that makes a lot of numbers, particularly I Don't Know How to Love Him, feel like they're trying to shoehorn in some sex appeal where is has no business being. And strangely enough, they give the same treatment to the reprise of I Don't Know How to Love Him, officially making it by FAR the least emotionally impactful but most uncomfortably homoerotic of any rendition of the song I've ever heard. Hence: medium place.
6) Live in Salerno, Italy - There's proshots out there of productions I find more interesting and than this, but this one's on Letterboxd so on the list it goes! Overall I don't really get a homoerotic vibe from this Judas and Jesus, but I will say they touch a lot during The Last Supper/Jaded Mandarin and Superstar, so they have that going for them. Kiss is pretty perfunctory, nothing too gay about it and they don't linger, and Judas' death is appropriately emotional, but as I'm writing this list I'm realizing there's a sort of baseline homoeroticism inherent in singing "does he love me too? does he care for me???" and I can't give too much credit to any one production just for singing the lyrics that exist in the show. It's more homoerotic than the John Legend version but that is a low bar indeed.
7) Live in Concert - Ok, so I've long held the stance that 90% of a good Jesus Christ Superstar is having a good Judas, and 90% of a good Jesus is having a good Gethsemane........ And this production has an okay but ultimately forgettable Judas (redeemed somewhat by his shockingly stellar rendition of Superstar) and an actively terrible Gethsemane. But for me the real thing that makes this production, which is staged beautifully and has a great supporting cast, pretty un-rewatchable is that there is zero chemistry between Jesus and Judas. And, look, I don't think there needs to be homoeroticism for this relationship to be compelling, it just so happens that the dynamic put forth here is neither homoerotic nor compelling. They interact minimally throughout the show, with Jesus totally absent from the number Superstar, which is often a great opportunity for some last subtle relationship moments. The kiss is stilted and the hug that follows (which feels like it's trying to do a lot of heavy lifting to tell us they care about each other) even more so. The only thing that makes me buy into there being real affection there is Judas' reprise of I Don't Know How to Love Him, which is a moving performance, but can't make up for the total lack of feeling in their few actual interactions. Anyway, Pilate carries 100% of the queer energy of this production.
Bonus: this is not a full production, but rather more of a tribute concert, but I would highly recommend checking out the 2003 Czech JCS concert. It has some WILD, and very 2003 interpretations of some of the songs, as well as some more traditional takes, but the thing that will really be relevant to your interests if you're reading this list is their take on I Don't Know How to Love Him (not the reprise, the song itself. Just go watch it, trust me).
Other productions I watched that I would recommend:
2025 Hollywood Bowl (absolutely devastated that COVID robbed me of this live experience, but I've found lots of clips from this show and it seems like it ruled. Hopeful for a proshot or full bootleg at some point. Big queer energy due to the casting choices, but virtually no homoerotic energy between Jesus and Judas... also due to the casting choices)
2012 Broadway Revival (I love this version so much. I absolutely adore Josh Young's Judas.)
2022 National Tour (not as much my cup of tea as the 2012 production, but good stuff nonetheless)
2013 Hungarian Production (bummed I couldn't find a recording of a different Hungarian production that looked awesome, but this one is worth a watch if only for the dance-off between Good and Evil. Also it's in English)
2018 Mexican Production (fun staging. Big queer energy.)

Jesus Christ Superstar Highlights
A thing that tickles my brain is comparing different versions of JCS. So I'm just going to list little highlights and special things I like about each version I've seen. These are listed in the order I watched them, so relative comparisons are generally happening in hindsight.
1973 movie: -This is my first, so it's always the benchmark, and what a high benchmark -I really like the framing device of the hippie bus setting the stage and closing out the performance. It adds a very specific vibe to the events, a sort of re-enactment feeling -Ted Neely and Carl Anderson vocals iconic for a reason -I still tap my fingertips on the nearest surface if I ever sing "he is daaaangerous". -Ben Daniels made Pontius Pilate a blorbo for me
2000 Movie: -Saddest, wettest version of Judas -This one for me was a much stronger highlighting of the Jesus/Judas relationship, letting them be really close and affectionate, with more obvious romantic undertones -You can see the moment Pilate recognizes Jesus as the man from his dream and backs away/panics
2025 Hollywood Bowl (what little is available): -Having Jesus played by a woman adds an interesting flavor to the dynamics -I already had a crush on Phillipa Soo and she is killing it -I didn't pay that much attention to Adam Lambert before but he had the right rock vocals for the role -In general there's a lot of neat body language and stage choices (Mary singing the second verse of Everything's All Right to Judas, him rejecting her touch, her bopping along to the Simon Zealotes song)
2012 Live Arena Tour: -Tim Minchin is doing a lot of heavy lifting as Judas -Alexander Hanson is in fierce competition for usurping favorite Pilate -Pete Gallagher makes an excellently suave Caiaphas, with a lot of little sneers and perfect expressions. Especially paired with Gerard Bentall's whole-foot-shorter Annas who has a little look of disgust when Judas touches him. -Judas' little anxiety cigarette -That cigarette getting snatched out of his hands by Caiaphas -In general a lot of small expressions and gestures and body work -I could be hesitant about Jesus actually healing the lepers instead of running away, since the ambiguity of his divinity and not showing miracles is a big part of the show. But the people aren't obviously healed, so it still works. And Ben Forster plays it with such abject desperation (really rushing, straining, trying so hard to get as many as he can) that the emotional intensity really did it for me.
2018 Live Concert -Judas is the one that sets of the little claps in "Nazareth your famous son". It is fun, but also sort of still speaks to 'Judas has been Jesus' right hand for years, the other apostles and believers will follow his lead if he cues them (sometimes)'. (And then they kind of mock him playfully with it later) -Similar cute little moment with a chorus member on "they are getting much too loud", or the one getting hugged after Judas calls them blind. -The one pharisee who says "a rabble-rousing mission" is having The Most Fun playing the worlds hammiest villain -I love this Simon's energy, noticed him in the background even before his identifying song -Not 100% sure on the "now they/we have him split" in terms of audio/musicality, but it did pique my interest to have a verse/scene showing the other disciples actively accusing/confronting Judas
hi! i'm kinda thinking about watching jesus christ superstar, and you posted about it again recently, so i thought to ask, what version of it you would recommend to watch, for someone who's never seen it before? in terms of like, being both a good version of it, and reasonably easy to get my hands on?
(okay technically i've seen part of a performance of jesus christ superstar before bc one time a few friends were watching it over discord anyway so i stopped by for a while, but it was in russian which i don't speak and it didn't have any subtitles, i only watched half or so of it, i was thoroughly confused the whole time, and the only reason i watched it was because the actors playing jesus and judas were ones i knew from other things and both of them were cute. So I don't exactly count it as seeing the show)
hello hello!
i'd say you have a few options here! these would be my top 2 recommendations, both are available on DVD:
Jesus Christ Superstar 1973: this is the actual movie musical version, so if you want a movie rather than a filmed stage production this is the one to go for. very ambitious (it was all filmed on location in Israel & Palestine) & has a lot of strong performances. a lot of people consider Carl Anderson and Ted Neeley The definitive Judas and Jesus. it's very 70s and personally i remember finding it kind of clunky but i haven't watched it in a long time and it is pretty Beloved by its fans.
Jesus Christ Superstar (2012): this is the pro-shot of the 2012 UK arena tour. stars comedian Tim Minchin as Judas and Mel C from the Spice Girls as Mary Magdalene.
i have mixed feelings about this production but if you want a stage show pro-shoot this is probably the best place to start! politically it is gloriously unsubtle which i loved. Ben Forster as Jesus absolutely smashes it musically IMO. the arena setting really works for the vibes of the musical. its also got radio DJ Chris Moyles as King Herod who also smashes it.
couple of downsides: for some reason i gather they autotuned Tim Minchin pretty heavily for the DVD release and the general consensus seems to be that it hurt his performance; there's also a lot of white people with dreadlocks in it.
& i will stop there so as not to overwhelm you with recommendations dgkjhfdkhj. but i might post a list of other easily-accessible versions if you're into that. :)
i hope you enjoy it!!
Hi! It's Harle from Sacrificial-pawns. Sharing some pics of Tim Minchin's Judas having a "crown of thorns" neck tattoo.
The ones from Shutterstock are from the After party of the Arena UK Tour at the O2 - 21 Sep 2012
Oh cool, never seen these before. Thanks so much for letting me know!
what's your favorite jesus christ superstar album/production besides the 1973 movie? i love your judas art btw!!!
thank you so much!
i actually haven't gotten around checking out many productions besides the popular ones....hmmmm......i know i liked the 2012 one with tim minchin judas. i do NOT like the 2000 one lol but it has its moments. the 2018 with john legend was alright but lacked punch. i think that's all i can say. i saw clips of a production they made during the pandemic that was livestreamed and adapted so the whole story happened on social media and streams (in universe, not on actual social media accounts) and i thought that was pretty clever, i'd love to watch the whole thing.
as for albums, there's this 2011 recording of a live show in vienna that's amazing, and a similar 2006 one as well with a judas i really loved and a female herod that kicked ASS. also i'm trying to find the 90s australian album but it seems like they took it off spotify, which is a shame because that was INSANE lmao i did not expect the 90s touches so that had me laughing for a while, i wish i could find it again. now that i'm looking at it, there's a few albums i can no longer find on spotify?? i was listening to them literally just a couple of months ago :(
if anyone has any recommendations send them my way 👍
my ranking of every production i have seen (or listened) of jesus christ superstar
we are getting closer to holy week so IT'S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR. this is a remake of this post.
as always, sorry for any grammar mistakes, english is not my first language. also, this is my personal opinion, any other opinion is also accepted :)
without further ado, let's get into it!

in light of your latest rb, what is your preferred production of jesus christ superstar?? i've yet to see any but want to have fun with everyone & trust your taste on this :) ty in advance and also! i really love your art ^__^
you have come to the right neighbourhood... *puts on my pharisees hat* I am so happy to answer this question
I recommend you start with the 1996 west end revival (spotify, youtube). the insrumentation is great, the quality of the recording is crisp, and the performers are top-notch. steve balsamo as jesus is definitely the star of this one, his voice is very light and pure but he also portrays the character's inner conflict magnificently.
for comparison, there is also the original 1971 broadway cast recording (spotify, youtube). this is one of my favourite versions!
here is also the original 1972 west end production (youtube). also excellent!!!
if you actually want something to watch, there is the 1973 film (spotify, youtube, I think the film can be rented on YT as well, I borrowed the DVD from my local library haha). the film also has a magnificent cast, many people consider ted neeley the best jesus ever and he has an unique take on the role and a gorgeous voice. carl anderson as judas is also just superb. I think the best word to decribe this version is "raw", it's really haunting.
the original 1970 concept album (spotify, youtube) with ian gillan of deep purple as jesus and murray head as judas is also a must-listen! both singers are just divine, both their performances easily hold up against newer productions with ease, they're just divine.
there is also the 2000 film, watchable on youtube (the album on spotify). jerome pradon plays judas and he is absolutely glorious at it. dude is going absolutely off the rails and his voice is so whiny and he's so deliciously vindicative in the end. I've gotten the impression his performance can be sort of hit-or-miss, but I really like it!
for something more recent, there's also the 2012 arena tour (youtube) with ben forster as jesus and the legendary tim minchin as judas. a lot of people like this one, and while I personally don't like it much, maybe you will! there is also the 2018 live in concert (spotify, youtube). a solid, good production I think.
now I think every song in JCS is a solid banger, but good songs to look out for when listening is
heaven on their minds, sung by judas
everything's alright, sung primarily by mary (in many of the early productions, like the original concept album and the film, mary is played by yvonne elliman) while judas and jesus argue
this jesus must die, includes caiaphas, who has a bass voice, and annas
pilate's dream
I don't know how to love him, mary's ballad
gethsemane (I only wanted to say), jesus's power ballad. look out for his high note at "why should I die" (awesome compilation here)
king herod's song
superstar, judas questioning jesus from beyond the grave
good luck to you superstaring!!! I'm very normal about this musical
