Mono no aware (物の哀れ): (Japanese: “the sensitivity to ephemera”) The awareness of impermanence (無常 mujō), or transience of things, and both a transient gentle sadness (or wistfulness) at their passing as well as a longer, deeper gentle sadness about this state being the reality of life.

L’appel du vide: (French: “call of the void”) The psychological phenomenon in which people, with no desire to die, find themselves faced with a steep cliff and experience a strong desire to leap.

i’ll be honest: texting in french is somewhat of a nightmare. things are often written phonetically and literally nothing will look like the french in your textbook. however, just like actual french; it may be nonsense, but it’s nonsense with rules.

I’m not very good at summarizing. I never have been. I only end up confusing myself and feeling like a huge failure.

Since I’ve been doing Distance Learning, I really didn’t have any other choice than to summarize. This is how I do it. 

1. Make a list beforehand of what you need to study. 

Go through your textbook, write down all of the headings and subheadings along with any other information that you think is important. Take your time doing this as this list will serve as a guide once you start studying for your exam(s). You can tick off each heading/subheading as you study when you’re confident that you know your work. By doing this, you’ll know what you need to work on or spend some extra time on.

2. Choose a color scheme that works for you - and stick to it!  

3. Always read through the paragraph before highlighting.

Read. Read. Read. There is absolutely no point in just highlighting sentences/words that look important. You’ll only end up wasting your time and confusing yourself. The whole process will be so much easier if you actually understand what you are reading.

4. Use sticky notes to add information/answers to questions.

5. Use diagrams/flow charts or any other visual aids that will help you to understand better.

6. Always try and simplify as you go along.

Try and summarize in your own words. Try and simplify it as much as possible. Use other resources - the internet, teachers, other students etc. to help you understand better.

I always have this quote in the back of my mind when summarizing:

“If you can’t explain it to a six-year-old, you don’t understand it yourself.” - Albert Einstein 

This isn’t always easy. Sometimes textbooks can over complicate simple things and confuse you even more. Always, always, always try to simplify as much as possible.This will help you so much in the long run.

7. Bullets.

Oh, man. 

Don’t you just hate reading long, never-ending paragraphs?!

I do. 

Don’t be afraid to break down paragraphs while reading.

It will save you some time once you start summarizing because you can break up long paragraphs into bullet points.

It makes it easier to read, too.

8. Always keep a pencil nearby.

This is great for making some NB or ??? notes on the side or just a * if you need to look up a word etc.

9. Google is your friend.

Don’t know the meaning of a word? Google it. Use one of the synonyms to simplify your summaries. This is a life saver ;)

10. Take breaks. Please. And drink water.

Sitting at your desk for hours on end without a break is not good for you. Headaches, back pain, numb feeling in your legs, stiff neck, wrist pain etc. etc. 

Get up. Stretch. Go for a short walk. Watch a YouTube video. Listen to a song. Eat a snack. Moderation is key, though. Always remember: your health is important. 

I’ll post an update later about what kind of note taking method I use!

― How to write an essay as an undergraduate history student

These are general guidelines to help undergraduate students write better essays. *Note that every assignment is different. You should take the time to closely read the instructions and meet with your Professor if necessary. I hope you will find these useful and good luck writing your papers!

B E F O R E   Y  O U   S T A R T

Make sure that you have closely read the instructions as presented by your Professor. There are many different types of historical essays (argumentative essays, historiographical reviews and so on). It is imperative that your style is adapted to the type of essay you are required to write.

Gather all your information. Some Professors want students to write essays using only class material, others expect them to do more research.  If the latter, make sure to gather all (most) of your information beforehand. If you are a university student, you  have access to a library and many academic journals. Use this access and make sure to ask librarians for help when needed.

Take careful notes as you are reading in preparation for your essay. If your Professor provided a specific question, make sure to read critically for information that is susceptible to help you answer this question. If your Professor has not assigned a question, you should still read carefully and try to find the different ways in which historians address certain issues. 

Some students prefer not to plan essays, others do. I suggest planning as it may be the best way to map out your ideas and begin forming an argument. It is impossible to cover all the facets of a problem in one essay, therefore, planning your essay may be the easiest way to make sure your work covers important aspects of a given issue. Planning will also help ensure that all your arguments remain connected and support a central claim.

Find a few (preferably history) essays that you find well-written and pay special attention to their structure. While you should be careful never to be so inspired as to be tempted to copy (this is a very serious academic offence) the goal of this exercise is to find more academic vocabulary and see how it is used by actual scholars. 

W H E N    W R I T I N G 

If your Professor gave you a question to answer in advance, make sure you answer this question and this question only. While you should always supply your arguments with pertinent examples, these should be succinct and focus on the main contention debated in your essay.

Make sure your essay has a thesis statement (yes, even when you are asked to answer a question). Your Professor should know from the very beginning of your essay what you will be arguing and what position you will take. All subsequent paragraphs until your conclusion should serve to better make the case for your thesis.

Try to follow the “classical” essay model, that is: introduction, body and conclusion. 

Began each paragraph with a topic sentence announcing the focus of the next few lines. Conclude the paragraph by rephrasing the main idea and possibly by trying to make a connection with the next body of text.

Always bring evidence to support your arguments. This evidence may come from the work of other historians are from a passage of a primary document. Whatever the case may be, make sure that your arguments are solidly built and “defended”.

Introductions and conclusions are (usually) not optional. Your introduction should help the reader understand what the text will argue and how it will proceed to do so, while your conclusion finishes the text by summarising key points and perhaps even making a suggestion for future studies. (An additional tip may be to write a simple introduction at the beginning and then rewriting it when the essay is finished. Once you are satisfied with your introduction, you may copy and paste it as your conclusion making necessary adjustments and avoiding copying the exact sentence structure. The point here is to use your introduction as a guide to write your conclusion.)

Be precise, you are writing a history paper, dates and names matter. 

Be clear and concise but make sure that all your points are well-developed. 

G E N E R A L   T I P S 

Locate your argument in historiography. As a historian in training, it is important that you show your Professor that you understand there are debates regarding specific interpretations. It is also important that you demonstrate that your line of argumentation is supported by the work of experienced researchers. Even if your essay primarily focuses on primary document analysis, surely some have analysed this text or object before, make sure to mention these scholars and their contributions to the debate.

Citations should be used wisely. As said before, it is important to ground your argument in the work of other historians. In this sense, citations are immensely useful. That being said, depending on the length of your paper, too many citations may suggest laziness as you have made little efforts paraphrasing. A few carefully selected and well-integrated quotes in your paper should do the trick.

As I’m stocking up on what I’ll need to buy for school starting in 2 months, I decided to make a small list of my personal essentials, that may be useful for you guys too.

1. Your wallet (with your student card, ID and some change). Not only is having your ID essential, but having some change on you can be useful is you need some food or a drinj from the vending machine if you didn’t bring enough.

2. An umbrella. If you live in a country/place where it rains often enough for this to be an essential (so not once a year). I always have an umbrella in one of the sidepockets of my bag (which are meant for water bottles, but I have a pocket size umbrella)

3. Mints. NEVER go talk to your professor with a bad breath. Did you just eat something smelly? Grab the mints from your bag, have one, and go talk to your teacher with a fresh minty breath.

4. Lip balm. You don’t want to have cracking/dry lips at school. A lot of people get distracted from their dry lips, start biting them or pulling at them. So to prevent yourself from getting distracted, take care of those suckers.

5. Chargers (+ powerbank). You don’t want to run out of battery in the middle of the school day. Take your laptop charger, a powerbank, and a usb-phone cable with you. You can charge your phone from the powerbank or your laptop, and your laptop anywhere with an outlet. (Don’t carry around your phone charger’s block if you don’t have to)

6. Earphones. Sometimes people talk really loud in the hall or the cafeteria, while you just want to read or study. It’s best to block out their voices with some instrumental music (you can easily find study playlists on Spotify)

7. Water bottle. Don’t just rely on coffee or plastic cups. Having a bottle of water with you that you can refill will help you save money (by not having to buy drinks) and is better for the environment.

8. Basic stationary. 2 pens, 2 pencils, 1 eraser, 1 highlighter, a pair of scissors and a roll of sticky tape. You never know what you’d need, but the bare necessities should always be in your pencil case. (Keeping an extra pen in your wallet is also great in case you forget your pencil case)

9. Extra paper (or an thin extra notebook). You never know when you’ll need to write something down or draft something. (I like to keep drafts out of my notebooks)

10. Deodorant. The worst thing is being sweaty at school. Just get a travel size deodorant and put it in your bag with the mints and lip balm. Even if you don’t need it, someone else might. (Spray is best cause it’s more hygienic if you were to share)

Bonus: 11. Blotting Paper. Get rid of the oiliness of your skin without removing make-up by patting down with some blotting paper. It absorbs the oils without wiping of any foundation
