hey fun fact did you know that if you're on the schizophrenia spectrum, have psychosis, have psychotic symptoms or traits, etc, that you're loved and your symptoms and traits should not be vilainized or seen as evil or ugly?
Thereâs no such thing as work-life balance for neurodivergent & chronically ill people.
This is because everything in my life requires work:
maintaining friendships
keeping up with my hygiene
managing bills
making money
remembering my basic needs
sleeping regularly
outputting creatively
All requires some aspect of work for me.
And when everything in your life requires work, your balance goes out the window.
If you're neurodivergent and overwhelmed â I see you.
If you're chronically ill and overwhelmed â I see you.
You're not dysfunctional.
You're not incapable.
You're doing your best.
Oh no it's actually not that hard to do <thing>, you just have to *proceeds to list the most tedious and draining series of tasks you've ever fucking heard*
You know that feeling when the pain is just too loud and you constantly feel overstimulated?

One of the worst things about chronic illness is how it changes your relationships.Â
Because youâre so tired, itâs hard to regulate your emotions. You might snap at your loved ones, or lean on them for emotional support too heavily.Â
You might worry about asking your loved ones for too much help. Even if you have very supportive family and friends, internalized ableism can make you feel that youâre a burden on them. Â
Worst of all, chronic illness can cause the people who donât understand it to say very hurtful things to you or even walk out of your life entirely.
Itâs extremely hard to cope with the changes that chronic illness brings to your body while coping with the changes it brings to your relationships and your life.Â
Have you tried vitamin C?

Having to do all the work
With managing my illness, getting the right tests, getting the right treatment, buying books, reading NICE guidelines that the GP SHOULD be sticking to, being medically gaslit all the time, itâs exhausting. If you donât have the time or are not willing to help your patients, do NOT have a pop when they go off and research their own condition - after all, whatâs wrong with being educated about it - not like I live with hashimotoâs hypothyroidism and will have to for the rest of my life..Â
I mean, I paid into the system since I was fifteen; it was supposed to be insurance to allow me to keep living when I got too old to work, or in case I became disabled. And guess what? I became disabled, and a little over 1k a month isnât enough to live on in the US.
And if you, out of desperation, try to work to get off of disability (as I did), you risk spending years trying to get reinstated if and when you canât pull it off. I was homeless more than once, and wasnât always sure where my next meal was coming from. I lost pretty much all my material possessions more than once.
And thanks to GOP rhetoric claiming folks are âfaking disabilityâ and âgaming the system,â (thatâs a lieâit is HARD to get approved), they try so hard to find reasons to deny you or kick you off.
Hell, Iâm an author (and according to some award winning, critically acclaimed friends, a pretty good one) who is afraid to even TRY to publish anymore, for fear that Iâll have just enough success to get kicked off SSDI, but not enough to sustain me.
Disabled folks arenât asking for mansions and personal limousines; we just wantâand deserveâto live as independently as possible, and with some level of dignity. And to be able to take a chance to try to better our circumstances without risking our lives.
