Michelle has posted on Twitter that she's reading this book called The Nocturnal Brain by Guy Leschziner to research the Wolf Brother sequel (I'm guessing the 8th book, since Vipers Daughter is already finished).
So it's about sleep disorders, and I'm thinking that it might have to do with Renn, since she can see visions in her dreams. Maybe there will be demons in the story, since they mention demonic hallucinations. I think that Renn might be having sleep paralysis and think she's possessed by a demon (or Seshru's ghost or something) and therefor forms a danger to Torak. I know she's a danger to him in Vipers Daughter, so I wonder why and how (or if) it will have been resolved in book 8.

« Even when predators aren’t killing anything, their tracks, smells, and sounds can instill a state of simmering unease in their prey. This creates what ecologists call a “landscape of fear”—a mental map of risk that affects how hunted animals move over physical terrain. For example, in 2016, [researchers] showed that raccoons in the Gulf Islands spent less time foraging on local beaches if they heard recordings of dogs. And because the raccoons skedaddled, the rock pools filled with more fish, worms, and crabs. Fear reshaped the entire beach.
[…] But what about humans? [Researchers] placed speakers at sites where mountain lions had killed large prey and were regularly returning to feed; [and found that] human voices made them flee more than 80 percent of the time. […M]edium-size carnivores were also perturbed: Bobcats became more nocturnal, skunks became less active, and opossums spent less time foraging. The only animals that benefited were mice and rats, which took advantage of the predators’ absence […].
This study suggests that a conversation between two hikers can have a butterfly effect—a mountain lion moves more quickly, an opossum changes its feeding habits, deer-mouse activity increases […]. People often fear large carnivores like mountain lions, but in reality, they are far more scared of us. And as this study suggests, their fear can reshape ecosystems.
Experiments like his give an incredibly comprehensive picture of the reverberations of the human super-predator across the entire community […]. If [animals] are stressed, could they grow more slowly? If they spend more time hiding, could they miss out on mating opportunities? If they’re not foraging enough, would they die younger? […]
Crucially, these effects are separate from all the other things that humans do to animals, from destroying habitats to hunting them directly. [T]hrough our mere presence, we can affect wildlife by changing the contours of their landscapes of fear. “We’re a very loud and big species,” says Suraci. “Much of what we do is potentially terrifying to wildlife, like industrial activity and vehicle traffic. We tried to get past all of that and isolate the perceived presence of humans, separate from all the other disturbing things we do. And the implication is that we don’t need to cut down the forest to have an impact on wildlife.” »

Literally no trope emotionally fucks me up faster than “Character outlives their lover by many years and at the end of their life their lover comes to escort them from the world” like I only have to think about it hypothetically to start crying.
Michelle has also shown what the Raven Clan tattoo looks like, and apparently the lines are vertical and not horizontal, like I’ve been believing for the past 14 years?? My whole life is a lie
Michelle started with the first ideas for the cover of Vipers Daughter so I’ll put these first and then the final cover last. You can also watch the video if you want! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfBmuBsWMbg
After Michelle talks about how she and the cover designer of the first series came up the covers and are now discussing the cover for Vipers Daughter:
“So I’ll just recap for you, perhaps a little bit extra, what I think I’ve told you when I announced it, which is, you know, it’s two summers after Ghost Hunter ends. Torak and Renn have been living happily, with Wolf, in the Forest, until Renn discovers that Torak is in danger. And she’s the threat. So, that’s what I told John (the cover designer). And I also told him that Torak and Renn and Wolf, in the story, go north. Beyond the Far North. So there, we’re thinking ice and that sort of thing. So, let me show you a few of the ideas that he came up with, before we show you what we chose finally.”
First cover idea:
“The first one is a lovely one, I call it “dancing people”. It’s lovely, perhaps a little bit less adventure than, sort of, dancing. But I love the graphic, you know, the sort of fought (?) viper, vipers daughter.”
Second cover idea:
“The next one tells you something else about the story, cause it’s got a rather large animal on the cover. Yeah. Some of you may not have expected that. We did discuss having that on the cover, that is a mammoth. Yep. At one point, my agent, aka “secret elf”, said: ‘What’s an elephant doing on the cover?’ (laughs). And I said: ‘Oh Peter!’. But then we thought, hm yeah, it is a bit confusing , you’ve got viper, then you’ve got elephant, mammoth, then you’ve got Torak and Wolf, so, beautiful as it was, we thought possibly not.”
Third cover idea:
“The next one has a wonderful sense of urgency, I call it: “the running girl”. I really think that’s very interesting, especially the fact that she’s running towards darkness. That was a beautiful touch. But we sort of felt, in a way, yeah but, people are gonna miss Wolf.”
Fourth cover idea:
“And so then John went back to something, you know, more in tune with the actual original concept of the Wolf Brother design: “Torak, Renn and Wolf”, I call it. But with a sort of icy darkness about it, which I think, we’re really getting really close.”
Final cover:
(after showing a montage of the previous cover ideas)
“Tadaa! I really love that. I hope you do too, I think everybody in the publishers head of zeus thought: ‘Oh yeah’. I love the little viper around her leg, and the fact that Torak and Wolf are running after her.”
“And yeah, there’s the back. You can probably just see the mammoth peaking out. And I love the sense of the journey and all John’s strange little signs. So, that’s the cover. I hope it makes you feel, there’s an evil sign there (on the book), I hope it gives you a sense of what’s to come, in the story, without spoiling it too much.”

So Michelle just revealed that Vipers Daughter is going to be about Renn discovering that Torak is in danger, and that she is the danger. They've been happily living in the Forest together for two years, as mates, and now they have to defeat the new evil. They're going up north, beyond the Far North, and are going to see mammoths. I don't know if they're going to meet new people though. We don't know yet why Torak is in danger, but I guess it will be revealed when the book comes out...
Some more information: for the research, Michelle went to Alaska, to the Haida Gwaii islands of British Columbia, and Wrangel island, eastern Siberia. The Wrangel island is where she did her best research, and she says there’s a reason it’s this island, because it is a special place. She didn’t say why yet. And lastly, you don’t have to have read the first six books to be able to enjoy The Vipers Daughter, “but if you have, it’ll probably make it even more fun”, according to Michelle.
Sooo I’m pretty excited, and we can already speculate a little bit on what it’s going to be about :)
When Michelle said that the Wrangel Island was a special place, I think I’ve found out why…
I think there’s going to be mammoths in the new book? 😮
But then I wonder if the story is still going to be set in Scandinavia, since Wrangel Island is very far away, close to Canada. Because for as far as I know mammoths were already extinct in all other parts of the world.
Also, to travel from Scandinavia to Wrangel Island on foot would be 7000+km and there’s no way they’d walk that far in two years, through Siberia no less. And with Fin Keddinn, who has a bad leg and a clan to lead. There would have to be a very good reason for them to travel that far off. How would they even know about it in the first place.
Or maybe Michelle is going to take them to another place in Scandinavia, where there are mammoths, which probably wouldn’t be very historically accurate. Orrrrr I’m completely at the wrong end and she’s going to surprise us!
So The Viper’s Daughter is going to be set further than the far North! Now I’m curious... What’s past the far North? And why are they there? Are they going to an island maybe?

So I was just thinking about Renn, and about her love for archery. I found it pretty incredible that a twelve year old, with barely more than five years of experience, could outshoot clanmembers who'd been hunting for longer than she's been alive. I think that for her, there's more to it than the thrill of the hunt, or the satisfaction of hitting a target. I don't even know if she's innately more talented than the average person, or if it's purely through practice. She might very well have innately better hand-eye coordination, but we don't really know. And I don't think it matters either.
🏹🎯🏹🎯
I think that there are a few more reasons she's so passionate about her bow, besides enjoying archery for the sake of it. I think that she used archery as a way to distract herself and keep herself busy because she wasn't very well liked in her clan, and also to define herself as something other that a mage.
We all know how much she disliked learning and using magic. It was probably a way to see herself, and for others to see her, as a hunter first and foremost (I think it was even mentioned somewhere in the books). I'm not saying she's only into archery to gain more acceptance in the clan, but it might've been a factor, even if only for a while.
🏹🎯🏹🎯
Other reasons are also that Fin Keddinn made her bow and taught her how to use it. He was her favorite person, and it was their special thing. He also taught her to shoot shortly after her father died. Shooting became a way for her to channel her grief, and to find a sense of control after feeling powerless to do anything while her father was missing, and even moreso after the news that he'd died.
👩🏻🦰🏹👨🏻🦰🏹
It might as well just be that she's just innately better and therefor it was more enjoyable and satisfactory for her and that's why she's so passionate, but I would be very surprised if the above reasons didn't have anything to do with it.
But either way, if the above reasons are true, and she didn't start to love it purely out of talent, it's became such an integral part of her, and she became so good at it, that she'll never willingly give it up. Even though she's not with her clan anymore, worrying about her unpopularity, being pushed to become a mage, seeing Fin Keddinn, or grieving about her father.
It was a clear night at the end of the Birchblood Moon - the Seals called it the Moon of the Cod Run - and from the shallows came the clink of a lonely little ice floe bumping against the rocks.
