there’s something of a gremmy meta under the cut.
when we first meet gremmy, his eyes are colored in black (i’m using my unedited icons for this since I colored all of mine in and they’re probably wrong) and he’s really squinty so its fairly hard to define his actual irises...
of course there are early intro panels where he’s less squinty and you can actually see his eyes. but otherwise -- when he started getting pissed off is when we actually start seeing his eyes. then we get his eyes outlined and very defined and they remain like that until the end of his fight with kenpachi and he turns into a brain.
we get exactly three instances where gremmy is in a “color-spread.” the first one was released during his fight with kenpachi, a snippet of it below:
its meant to show that he’s unstable, etc, etc, but we’re focusing on his eyes. it isn’t just his irises that are red, its his entire eye, including the whites. since this was the first and only colored image of gremmy we had when i started this blog, i assumed his eyes were red/orange (its fucking red) from this spread. but then we got two more.
this is from his manga cover, death in vision. its colored, just like every other manga cover, but this one is just tinted pink. notice that his irises are the same shade of pink that the white of his hood is, while his hair, eyelashes, mouth, and even the buttons on his coat (not pictured) are colored.
and this is from the color spread that has all the sternritter together. gremmy is in the center, somewhat in the back. his eye(s) are shadowed the same shade that the shadow on his hood is. they’re white.
the red on the first color spread of gremmy that we got was purely an aesthetic choice to portray gremmy’s mood. he’s supposed to be seen as evil, the antagonist, etc, etc.
from chapter 579, where gremmy reverts back to the state of being a brain after being defeated by his own imagination. the brain casing doesn’t materialize after gremmy’s body disintegrates; its there already. so his brain is constantly encased in glass. while its shown that he has a spinal cord while his body is disappearing, there’s nothing for it to connect to -- the container is in the way. its there to keep his imagined body upright. no electrical impulses pass from his brain to his body.
he imagines he moves and so he moves.
the same can be said for his eyes. he may have optic nerves, but they are not connected to his brain. his body doesn’t see. he imagines he sees and so he “sees.”
gremmy’s eyes are white/clouded because his body is blind.
it can absolutely be said that his body was imagined in his own image before being reduced to a brain, so its entirely possible that he was blind before attaining the power of The Visionary and kept his eyes the same color.
it would also explain why he was given The Visionary to begin with. the quincy all have powers that are relevant to them and their past. if gremmy had been blind, he was essentially trapped within his own mind and had to imagine what reality looked like.
