âThe woman who checks her makeup half a dozen times a day to see if her foundation has caked or her mascara has run, who worries that the wind or the rain may spoil her hairdo, who looks frequently to see if her stockings have bagged at the ankle or who, feeling fat, monitors everything she eats, has become, just as surely as the inmate of the Panopticon, a self-policing subject, a self committed to a relentless self-surveillance. This self-surveillance is a form of obedience to patriarchy. It is also the reflection in womanâs consciousness of the fact that she is under surveillance in ways that he is not, that whatever else she may become, she is importantly a body designed to please or to excite.â
â Sandra Lee Bartky, âFoucault, Femininity, and the Modernization of Patriarchal Powerâ (via heteroglossia)
I've honestly gotten to the point in my life where I just dont consume media with graphic sex or violence. I think as a society we are incredibly desensitized to both and I'm tired of seeing basically porn and gore everywhere. Tbh if you cant tell a story without it, I really dont care what you have to say
What's that thing about the oppressed class being constantly exposed to depictions of violence against them by the ruling class as a way to maintain desired behaviors and submissive fear?
It's hard to act and form a resistance when you're casually retraumatized in the name of art and entertainment all the time. How many women are living in a low key constant state of dissociation?
Ive been thinking about this a lot recently. Good to know others feel the same way.
Imperialism kills.
They stole the land and killed the children.
idk how to say it but. itâs weird how being nervous about violence in sex n makeup n age gaps are now terf things instead of âim just trying to use my brain a lil harderâ things⌠transmisogynistic weirdo bitches donât own the core tenets of feminism âŚ
Wow, itâs almost like these are all âterfâ things because the terf hysteria is part of the current backlash against feminism, you absolute fool.
Actually âtransmisogynistic terf bitchesâ own everything about feminism

"we were born alone & we die alone" you delivered yourself during birth? built all the roofs that have ever given you shelter? sown the wheat in your bread?? weaved the clothes on your back??? wrote all the books youve ever read and the music youve ever listened to????? who made the literal bed youre going to die in - you, all alone?
we simply are not making it out of the patriarchy because the left has decided women donât exist, and when we do exist, arenât oppressed. and they decided to double down on this while we literally lose our rights one by one. its comedy
"This is not some psychological process of identification with women because women are wonderful; nor is it the insupportable assertion that there are no substantive, treacherous differences among women. This is not a liberal mandate to ignore what is cruel, despicable, or stupid in women, nor is it a mandate to ignore dangerous political ideas or allegiances of women. This does not mean women first, women best, women only. It does mean that the fate of every individual woman -- no matter what her politics, character, values, qualities -- is tied to the fate of all women whether she likes it or not. On one level, it means that every woman's fate is tied to the fate of women she dislikes personally. On another level, it means that every woman's fate is tied to the fate of women whom she politically and morally abhors. For instance, it means rape jeopardizes communist and fascist women, liberal, conservative, Democratic, or Republican women, racist women and black women, Nazi women and Jewish women, homophobic women and homosexual women. The crimes committed against women because they are women articulate the condition of women. The eradication of these crimes, the transformation of the condition of women, is the purpose of feminism. . . To be a feminist means recognizing that one is associated with all women not as an act of choice but as a matter of fact. The sex-class system creates the fact. When the system is broken, there will be no such fact. Feminists do not create this common condition by making alliances: feminists recognize this common condition because it exists as an intrinsic part of sex oppression. The fundamental knowledge that women are a class having a common condition -- that the fate of one woman is tied substantively to the fate of all women -- toughens feminist theory and practice. That fundamental knowledge is an almost unbearable test of seriousness. There is no real feminism that does not have at its heart the tempering discipline of sex-class consciousness: knowing that women share a common condition as a class, like it or not."

this is what we mean when we say that now itâs literally impossible to talk about female oppression
Whether they know it or not, this is an attempt to destroy class consciousness in women.

âI donât need to tell you that although most women will never be famous or professionally accomplished to the degree required for our portraits to appear on the cover of Time magazine, most women will feel the crush of a world against us before we die. The press against the small of your back on the subway after work, the photo you didnât ask for blinking at you in the dark, the paycheck too small to pay for what you need, is what Iâm talking about now. The man to whom you didnât exactly say no, but you certainly didnât say yesâbut who says he canât remember any of it now, 15 years later. The dad who left, the teacher who winked, the sound of your footsteps when youâre the only one in the parking lot and the streetlightâs gone out above you. Your inbox full of âcunts,â your mailbox full of bills. The boy you knew once who told you youâd be funny if you werenât such a bitch. The clutch at your throat in the night that tells you few will listen and none will care. The woman I describe is not just unremarkable; her harasser is, too. She fights in an ordinary way against ordinary oppressors. Women who arenât famous, rich, or otherwise remarkable tend not to have abusers who are famous, rich, or otherwise remarkable. And the ordinariness of abuse makes remarkableness a terrible weapon against it if we want this movement to scale. Our world requires a monumental change, but a lot of women cannot rise from their beds every day and do anything more monumental than survive. Just being alive deserves admiration when the gun is loaded and pointed at youâas it was for 1,694 women this year, most of them Blackâa predator has darkened your door, and the breath has left your lungs.â
â Thereâs nothing more ordinary than abuse @jezebel by @kellystout (via feimineach)
Someone please explain to me why TERFs think militantly fitting in to the patriarchy is feminism
Iâm still waiting for someone to explain this because thatâs pretty huge if true
@thismachinekillspimps if you are really interested in the answer, the shorthand is: no. Radical feminists believe in dismantling the patriarchal structure of society and radical feminist beliefs exist to actively change how society perceives and treats women.
Nothing in OPâs post is true and I do not know where they got that idea as itâs never something radical feminists have stated or proposed. If you are interested in learning more, I would recommend looking at @radicallyaligned or @opabiniawillreturn, they usually have masterposts of radfem beliefs and theyâre far more eloquent speakers on it than I am.
