might need to bake this take in the oven but I think miyazaki directed exactly one unambiguously progressive film & its ponyo

through its simplicity, it avoids a lot of his normal traps. like spirited away has a weirdly cogent conception of "greed" being something that exists exclusively in relation to ownership and hierarchy, but its still a movie about the existential impermanence of nature and culture and a desperate plea for arbitrary preservation of things. Ponyo is a movie where the emotional climax is a 5 year old finally being told the ramifications of his choice by an adult after it was hid from him for the whole movie, and being able to give informed consent with the fate of the world resting on it. It's a coming of age story for toddlers, and through that idea it says something almost radical.

I think this is just an issue that miyazaki himself is progressive on, he centers kids and their discovery of moral agency & independence very often, ponyo is the one that focuses on it the most & thru that he ended up making a youth lib movie
