Thinking about Eva Stratt being named after bilblical Eve. Thinking about her being religious. Andy Weir uses Christian concepts "Hail Mary"/"Grace" as the core part of the story, so it only stands to reason that Eva may be a callback to Eve. Within Christianity Eve is believed to have been the mother of humanity, source of life-> Eva Stratt is fighting a war against time so that humanity may continue to survive on Earth. According to Christian theology, Eve was tricked into eating the apple with the promise of the knowledge of the universe; Project Hail Mary will be sent to Tau Ceti at any and every cost so that Eva Stratt and her team may have the knowledge to figure out how to save Sol. Eve's fall for her disobedience and wanting the knowledge of universe, compared with Eva's fall after doing everything she can to send the ship to Tau Ceti. The concept of pre-destination and free will-> Eve was always supposed to be seduced into eating the fruit of knowledge, she was always supposed to disobey-> is a popular read based in Calvinism. Now of course this can't be wholly applied here but think about it in this way; Eva Stratt knew when the weight of the project was dumped on her shoulders, that she would be standing at the edge of a glass cliff- she will be made a scapegoat. But there's a choice-> step away from the cliff and do nothing but wait for Earth to either freeze over or be saved. Or take the reigns in your own hands and see Hail Mary to its end and then wait to see if Earth can be saved, but from within a prison cell of course. All in all Eva's life was already over when those alien life form started eating at the sun; because hoestly what choice does she whose greatest love is humanity, truly have here?

this has probably been said already but i love that 007: First Light is unique in that it subverts the whole “this AI is evil and needs to die” cliche by instead giving us “this AI is hallucinating data and fucking dogshite at its job and the guy who made it needs to die” which is infinitely more accurate and realistic as a plot point than the alternative
