please read this even if you're not indian. especially if you're not indian.
you've seen the jokes. india is "dirty", indians are "everywhere", why don't they fix their own country. ok. let me tell you why, and what's happening right now while nobody's watching.
first, the history you skipped: britain ruled india for two centuries and drained it. economist utsa patnaik's research estimates around $45 trillion in today's money was taken. the india that got independence in 1947 was one of the poorest countries on earth. every "why is india like this" question starts there. you don't get to profit off a robbery and then mock the crime scene.
now, what's happening RIGHT NOW:
in may the question paper for NEET leaked. that's the national medical entrance exam. over 2.2 million students took it. cancelled. years of studying, families' savings poured into coaching, gone overnight because someone sold the paper. students died by suicide after. these were kids who wanted to be doctors.
and out of that came a protest movement. a gen z group called the cockroach janta party, started by a 30 year old named abhijeet dipke, got 22 million instagram followers within DAYS. they've been doing a sit-in at jantar mantar in delhi demanding education minister dharmendra pradhan resign.
and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.
it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:
• infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.
• youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.
• only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.
• manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.
• journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.
• even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.
and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.
what i'm asking:
if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.
if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.
india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.

The sky is hidden by cloud, stony gray amongst the darker buildings rising to meet them. Shadow cloaks the alleyway, but the criminal I've been chasing is still visible, on the ground, their black clothing decrepit. They tremble.
I approach them at a slow, deliberate pace. Each step forward weighted.
They can't look at my eyes, my face. They just keep blabbering.
"Wait—WAIT! Please. Please, stop, I—" They swallow, almost sobbing now, a hand raising to try to shield themself. "I'm sorry, I'M SORRY, I won't do it again, I—"
I stab my sword into the ground next to them and crouch down with a chuckle, making them yelp and jump. They continue to shake, staring at me now, but still avoiding my gaze.
I put my chin in my hand, my other one still gripping the hilt of my sword. "Look at me."
They tentatively glance into my eyes. I wait until they're not looking away at all.
Then I stick my tongue out, smiling.
The criminal looks confused and suspicious and nervous all at once. I can see their wide eyes taking me in, and even hear their rapid breathing.
"I'll simply give you a warning, silly." I yank my sword out of the ground, making the criminal cry out again in alarm, then put it back in its scabbard at my hip, clean and free of stains. I stand up to my full height, which is not very tall at all, but it makes them flinch anyway. "You won't do it again, right?"
"No, no...I won't...."
"Good!" I exclaim, bouncing on my feet and smiling down at them. "Then don't be afraid! All you did was try to steal and run away! I mean, if blades were involved, then it'd be reeealllly serious, but as it stands..." I shrug, my smile twitching. "I think you learned your lesson."
"Um. R—Right."
"Okay, bye!" I say cheerfully, and spin around on my heel.
bonus (warning for blood, but still some whimsi i promise):
"I'm not going to beg for mercy," she hisses before I can get a word out.
My sword is shaking in my grasp, but its tip is still pointed at her throat. If I twitched too badly, it would make her bleed. So I try to steady myself, breathing hard, sweating. The wound in my side is not helping.
She's about the same. Chest heaving, her eyes dart around wildly for an escape, glaring at me the most. But I sliced one of her ankles and bruised her arms by throwing her around and, honestly, may have overdone it. She's barely resting back on her elbows on the floor, limbs trembling.
"I wouldn't want you to," I say cheerfully, then grimace in pain. My side is bleeding and exposed to the air since she cut off half of my coat. I continue to stand as tall as I'm able, though, with my sword pointed at the criminal's throat. Besides, pain is...it doesn't bother me like it would for others.
"You're a weird guard," she mutters. She attempts to scoot backward, but after groaning, stops. "And I can't go anywhere, so stop pointing that thing at me."
I continue holding my sword there, ignoring how it shakes.
She snipes at me four or five more times before backup finally arrives. I manage to keep myself from leaning against anything, my stance good enough to hold my sword like always.
"This is...the first time in a while you didn't arrest a criminal by yourself," says one of my fellow guards after they pick up the exhausted criminal and carry her toward the dungeon. "Are you okay? We could call a healer—"
"I'll make it there on my own, don't worry," I protest, smiling. "Thank you. Please make sure the criminal's wounds are treated before chaining her up."
I do make it there. My steps are slow, but the infirmary isn't that far, and I don't even limp.
Once inside, a healer rushing toward me with wide, panicked eyes, I finally notice how much blood was left behind in my wake. It pools over the infirmary floor and outside the door I came through. I bring my hand away from my noticeably numb and painless side. It's red, like fresh dye or paint, absolutely covering my skin.
That's the last thing I see before passing out. The criminal was caught before she could hurt anyone else, though, and that's all that matters.
i think other guards normally go to the central fountain for gossip or rumors to use as leads, yk from people passing by or perhaps cleaners/servants refilling their buckets of water (tis a rather popular spot for ppl to go you see),
but i just go there because tis in the middle of the main square (i can see a lot of things) and tis nice and calm most of the time!!

Sun Chaser, created by Bernard Badion and Bobby Pontillas, centers around Jordan Santos. A teen who's summer vacation turns upside down when he accidentally opens a portal and an ancient evil attacks his lola's island.
The pilot is out on YouTube and the Kickstarter has already been launched. The team behind this project does not have a Tumblr, I am merely a Filipino who sees it's potential and wants it to flourish.
I hope that my plea to support this will not go unheard. Animation in the Philippines is rare and I want such an art form to be taken seriously in my home country.
Which is why I want this to be supported. To let the Sun Chaser team continue to have the chance in having their story told and may it inspire other Filipino stories in animation to come out into the spotlight as well.
So, to everyone--not just my fellow Filipinos here on Tumblr--spread this post around! Watch the pilot! And support the Kickstarter if you can!
Pilot:
Kickstarter:
An animated adventure-comedy made by the Filipino diaspora for the world.
Linktree:
An animated adventure workplace comedy on a boat! Fully animated in the Philippines. Premiering on YouTube June 2026!
