Here's a video of my old band from last summer. Bands are tough to manage so props to everyone who's pulling it off!

Ageism is a real thing. I had to get my head around how am I going to — in the music industry, being in front of the camera at 50, it’s not as if we — women — are seen as Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt where we’re just coming into our hotness. They’re leading men! There are leading women that are around my age but it’s just starting to happen. You’re just starting to see that happen in the movie industry. But coming to a rock concert — [women] can’t be doing granny rock. We’re singing about emotions, we’re singing about sexuality, we’re singing about all these things. Whereas roles for Helen Mirren, who is the hottest thing I’ve ever seen — try and find her equivalent in rock and roll. We are having to carve that out for ourselves because you don’t go see some of my contemporaries, you don’t go see the Chilies [Red Hot Chili Peppers] and think They need to be doing grandpa rock. No! They’re virile men who are sensual and they can sing about anything. Our culture doesn’t see it that way [for women]. There are certain things, if you start singing about them — if you listen to the young girls, I hear them talk, “Oh! She looks desperate! That’s so desperate!” Whether you’re in your 20’s looking desperate or you’re in your 50’s looking desperate — desperate is desperate. But you don’t hear them say that about the guys
Tori Amos On Taylor Swift, Fame And Embracing Menopause
This quote from Tori Amos is so, so, so right on. I hope she can pull this off.

First there was "Bangs" and now there's this. Brick + Mortar delivers again!
Brick + Mortar and Kosmic Daydream @ SXSW. This festival is kick ass!
Alan Smith of The Porchistas- a Montclair based Indie Rock band- turned 100 this weekend! To celebrate he invited music lovers from around NJ to his home for a special night of intimate performances. Here's Alan himself with his band mate Adam rockin out! Matthew Brown of Bog Iron Bloom played a solo acoustic set that I was lucky enough to sit in on. So many talented people in one place!
Justin Timberlake will forever have my heart because of this video.
Beck's latest creation is more than a mere sequel to 2002's brooding masterpiece, Sea Change. It provides a glimpse of new frontiers in letting go and moving on, told by someone who wasn't thinking quite this way before.

There's No Such Thing as New Music
Bold, I know, but I think it's true. Music, like any other art form, has basic building blocks that have been around since...the beginning of music. Just like poets have different literary techniques and tools, musicians and composers work within a set of rules. These rules are finite and form the core of any and every song. Just like in color theory where certain color combinations are more pleasing to the eye than others, in music theory there are certain chord combinations that are more pleasing to the ear.
Every composer has a palate of musical colors that is constant across the board. What creates variation is the different ways the composers choose to use the colors. Imagine it as if you were to look at a painting by Monet next to one by Dali, the differences would stick out to you at once. But as hard as it may be to see, there is a core structure that binds the two together. This is the same in music. Two songs can use different sounds and styles, but they still share a basic musical foundation.
I want to make it clear that I am saying there is no such thing as new music not there's no such thing as original music. Over time we have seen music evolve and expand, but the building blocks remain stable. Every song shares these blocks. Every song is a permutation of the same set of blocks and creativity is what allows people to take them and make different structures.
Don't think I'm trying to discourage anyone from trying to make new music. My thing is this: acknowledge that all music has a past. Do your homework, understand where your sounds came from and get familiar with the building blocks you're using. Give yourself a break, and rather than try to reinvent the wheel with your songs, work within the framework that has been around for centuries. Let yourself off the hook because you're never going to create a new song. Instead, allow yourself to create your song and make it as true a representation of your idea as possible.
1) If you like Pop music, you actually just like this man.
2) Didn't know Backstreet Boys were still making music (they have an album they released in 2013)
3) Mind...blown
ONEtip: Get More People to Come Out to Your Band's Show
Do you sometimes feel that your band’s draw is languishing? Are you tired of seeing the same people at your shows and want to play to a new crowd, even in your hometown?
If you’re like most musicians, you know that you absolutely can do better, that you have more fans out there than who actually show up at at the venue, and despite always receiving positive feedback, you don’t know why more people aren’t showing up. Here are some tips on building some momentum back into your tour dates so you can increase your band’s draw:
1. Find a Different Angle for The Show: It’s easier to get more people to show up if it’s your band’s first show, when you’re releasing a new album, it’s a tour kick off, or when it’s your final gig. Obviously, it’s because your fans realize those as special occasions and want to be there.
So rather than making every local show the same, find creative ways to make them more enticing: film a live music video, let fans write the set list, do special covers, play acoustic if you normally don’t (or vice-versa), record a free download of a live track, etc. In other words, give your fans a compelling reason to show up. Answer: Why will this show be different than any other? What makes this exact show special?
