IN the well-oiled machine of the Vatican, one well-disciplined, brightly-uniformed cog turns with particular dedication and fervor - of course, it's the Pontifical Swiss Guard. Day in, day out, they are responsible for the Holy Father's protection. They keep watch at general audiences; stand guard at the gates of the Apostolic Palace; devote themselves to their church and their duty. However, maybe you've wondered… What do these people think about while standing around for all that time? What do they do in their free time? What do they gossip about on their lunch break? What kind of dumb nonsense do they get up to on their day off?
THE Swiss Guard tells all… In the debut issue of The Sentinel - a deeply unserious magazine about the life and times of the Guardia Svizzera Pontifica, and its many friends in the Vatican Security Services.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
THIS zine is the brain child of a gaggle of Conclave (2024) enthusiasts… That got a little carried away with it. Read: Accidentally created a whole parallel-universe Vatican Security Services out of original fictional characters. And wrote, and drew, and created a whole bunch about their lives, loosely set in the Conclave universe. A collective labour of love, creativity, and maybe a little bit of madness. And still on the 6th of May, new halberdiers find themselves with the opportunity presented to them they have been trying for in the prior year. This means we just had ourselves plentiful new guards (real and false), and though the first edition of our zine is not(!) so new, it is still a community thriving on the fervour of our passion. After months of hard work, of writing, illustrating, interviewing, and compiling, we are proud to present to you the first issue of THE SENTINEL—a zine about the life and times of the Pontifical Swiss Guard and its people. The Guards, under the fearless leadership of social media manager Corp. Pedretti, and in tandem with the Vatican Press Office, have been working dutifully to create this glimpse into the Guard’s day-to-day. We hope to present an image of the Guard that is professional and dignified…mostly.
This project was started in Spring 2025, and was originally intended for release on the original swearing-in date of the new Swiss Guard recruits, 6 May. The passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, however, and the subsequent postponing of the real-life swearing-in ceremony led to our decision to postpone the zine launch date, as well—moving it to the new swearing-in date of the Swiss Guard, 4 October, the Feast of St. Francis. Looking back at all the work we have done, we could not be more proud of this little universe that has grown out of our shared project—during our time working on the first issue, our cast of characters just about doubled in size! (You will get to meet them soon…)
This zine is the result of a lot of collaborative writing and musing, a lot of gushing and screaming about dramatic and harrowing story beats, and lots and lots of love.
We hope to keep bringing you tales from the life and times of the Guardia Svizzera Pontifica.

With the election of His Holiness INNOCENT XIV as the new Bishop of Rome, the Commander has commissioned a new FLAG as the STANDARD of our regiment.
2.2 The FLAG of the PONTIFICAL SWISS GUARD
is divided by a white cross into four fields, the first of which bears the coat of arms of the reigning pontiff—INNOCENT XIV, white field blue cross ordinary; peace dove charge on the ordinary, with five loaves and two fish in the quadrants; keys in saltire surmounted by a mitre)—and the fourth that of JULIUS II, the founding Pope—azure, a golden oak uprooted, bearing acorns and with branches crossed in a double cross of St. Andrew; keys in saltire surmounted by the papal tiara on a red field)—both on a red background; the second and third fields bear the colours of the CORPS and the House of MEDICI (red, yellow and blue).
At the intersection of the cross is the coat of arms of the Commander, HANS MAURITZ LEUTZINGER—Gules, a black house emblem (a cross-headed shaft with a declining moon base, a raised, pointedly downward-angled half-crutch cross bar pointing upwards above a four crossed with a bevel to the left, enclosing a silver crosslet flanked below by two golden stars), surmounted by a helmet with white plume, and surrounded by a laurel wearth.

2.3 The STANDARD
remains under the care of the Commander, and is carried on parade by the SERGEANT MAJOR and flanked by TWO SERGEANTS bearing flame-bladed swords on solemn occasions:
2.3.1 In procession in ST. PETER'S SQUARE during the URBI ET ORBI (Easter, Christmas, and the announcement of a new pontiff).
2.3.2 The SWEARING IN of new guards, every 6 May, when recruits grasp the STANDARD with their left hand and recite the OATH, their right hand raised with their first three fingers extended as a symbol of the HOLY TRINITY.
2.3.3. At discretion of the Commander or the Holy Father.

A MEMO FROM COMMANDER H.M. LEUTZINGER ON THE 498th ANNIVERSARY OF THE SACK OF ROME
As every year, today we remember our comrades who, five centuries ago, made the ultimate sacrifice for their Pontiff and their Church. On this solemn occasion, we traditionally welcome the new faces among us and renew our own vows—as we certainly shall today. Certain in- and out-of-universe events shall not cause our duty to waver, as we stand against the march of time. May God and all the saints strengthen us.
But, like Easter which precedes it, this day is not exclusively funereal, as it marks a new beginning. The architect Vasari recalls that, on the eve of the Sack, while the city braced for attack, the painter Parmigianino continued at his work—St. Jerome’s vision of John the Baptist and Our Lady. “He did not move from his work even for the sound of the Germans who were entering the houses—but coming upon him and seeing him at work, they were stupefied by that masterpiece, and, as is wont of gentlemen, let him proceed. And so while that most impious cruelty of those barbarians ruined the poor city … he was recognised by those Germans and defended from every injury.”
We cannot assume that, in our service, we will receive such generous treatment as the painter. But let us pray—and know—that we will be justly recognised; that our duty is just and beautiful in its justness. Let us pray that we are as faithful as the painter; that we will not waver, even in the face of such atrocities and such glorious truths. And, even without the celebration traditional to this day, let us take the opportunity to refresh our oaths, to acknowledge our comrades, to consider our privileged place in this city and the Church.
