Conflicted

I don’t really want to tell anyone in real life this so here goes.

A kid who attended the school I teach at died this weekend. I even taught him earlier this year. He was only 17.

Thing is, he was kind of a dick. No matter how nice I was to him, he continued to treat me like shit and blow me off. He eventually got kicked out of our school because he kept setting off the fire alarms in the bathroom by vaping. It’s already a continuation/second-chance high school anyway, most kids know they’ve fucked up and are aware they need to fix it. Not this kid. Plus he died in a car accident driving unlicensed and probably drunk (as the story I heard is he was driving from one party to another). Used to brag about going to sideshows and was known to drive aggressively.

So yeah... I don’t really feel bad. Maybe that makes me a bad person. When I heard a student at our school died, my heart skipped a beat but I was kind of relieved when I read that it wasn’t one of the ones I actually cared about.
