Elijah hasn’t been seen regularly for months. Of his few close friends, fewer still know where he’s gone.

Elijah is literally a whore’s son. Growing up around the trade lead him to become a serving boy before he was old enough to join it. His clientele used to be of the wealthier disposition, and as such, he knows rigorous etiquette and has a wide vocabulary.

He’s a mommy’s boy because he lost his mother to suicide -- or what appears to be suicide, he isn’t sure -- quite young.

Elijah could very well be dead, given the above facts.

His closest friend is his teacher, Jayam. Jayam is ruthless and unforgiving, but a spectacular elementalist. Elijah, as a result of having a great teacher and a natural talent, has become an adept channeler of magic, as some of his acquaintances know quite well.

Elijah was saved from poverty by his teacher, but only just. Jayam is working class at best.

Contrary to popular belief, no, he is not a bastard of some far-off Elonian noble family and is not searching for his lineage to reclaim his family’s legacy. He’s a descendant of a gambler and a whoremonger reformed priest.

Also contrary to popular belief he is not a serial killer.

Elijah has the deed to his late mother’s home. It’s unknown if he’s living there or not; however, it was purchased by a suitor and passed down in her will.

The other possession of his that is of note is his staff. Gnarled and almost ancient, it is lined with inscriptions in a runic language, banded by silver.

I’m not really picky. • Books I’m currently reading: Just finished Rules of Civility by Amor Towles. Started with the first short story ‘book’ of the Witcher series, so The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski.

11. If you have characters that embody certaintraits of yours—good or bad—has writing them changed how you view those traits?Has it affected you in any way?

I find characters that are the farthest from myself to be the most rewarding, and to that end, I try to avoid putting myself in them. For example, take Malice Whispertongue aka Rrafaz Scornfall, who is punctual, patient, by-the-book, gets up early, and completes all of his work on time and in flying colors. In real life, I’m none of these.

However, just as it’s hard to separate the musician from his particular sound, I inadvertently put one particular quality in most of my characters: a logical, argumentative mind. Will has this. Malice has this. Elijah has this. Galandol, Vaughne and even Gil (at times) has it too. It’s the one thing I can’t fully separate. Not many of my characters act on impulse or justify actions with emotion.

I don’t know if I’ve been affected by it in any way, though, nor if it’s changed the way I look at it. If I had to give a way, I’d say that it’s given me insight to different people’s viewpoints, whether they’re an dead, perpetually salty paladin or a ne’er-do-well sailor that has a lot of growing up to do... But that sounds really idealistic and storybooky.

16. Is there a character of yours who’s a realstruggle to write/draw? Why do you think that is?

I don’t think there’s one character in particular that’s been a real struggle to write all of the time, but there are qualities scattered across a lot of my characters that are hard to write some of the time.

Kehan’s devotion to the Six and his persistent empathy, Elijah’s indirectness of character and reservation, Malice’s grey morals, Vernon’s tantrums... Those are some of the things that come to mind when I think about this. I often have a hard time getting into the mindset for some of these. The reason I think that is because those qualities are the most foreign to me; It requires me to change the way I think almost completely. It’s night to day.
