One of the funniest things about Mormonism is that I’m sure Joseph Smith never believed any of the bullshit he said. There are some religions and cults where you have faith the original prophet actually thought they were talking to angels or believed the set of principles they laid out for their followers were for the greater good. Joseph Smith was a dumbass but like PT Barnum he realized a sucker was born every day and he was one step above the average 1830s sucker. He went from making people pay him to look at a rock in a top hat and ‘locate buried treasure’ to receiving lost bits of scripture, through the rock and top hat method. His wife caught him cheating and he said an angel visited him and told him men should be allowed multiple wives and not obeying that would send her to hell. I’m fairly convinced that dude was an atheist. He was on that hustler grindset. Brigham Young might have actually believed some of the shit he said but I don’t think Joseph Smith genuinely had faith in Mormonism or gave a fuck about humanity in the slightest.
Few people hustle and scam so hard that they’re considered a martyr and a prophet 200 years later and their fanfiction is considered serious lost biblical scripture even though they stole lines from Shakespeare.
To all my writer friends who are on the struggle bus/suffering from writer's block/just dealing with life stuff right now!
A lot of Protestants are at least able to tell a somewhat heroic story about their church through the Reformation. You have peasants bravely overcoming their lords (never mind you that Luther betrayed this revolution and that they lost horribly—I mean they were utterly annihilated whenever real soldiers fielded them in an actual battle.) There were sincere efforts to strike back against church corruption, allow ordinary people to interpret scripture, and in more radical moments hold church property in common. Of course, this gave rise to episodes of iconoclasm that destroyed a lot of priceless art, opened the door to a kind of fundamentalism that we're still dealing with, and so on. But they at least have a story they can tell in which they seem largely protagonistic. And Anglicans, you know, it feels like they don't get that at all. I know this has been remarked upon like a million times to the point that they're probably sick of it. But it's a real blow to credibility.

Nuke canada now
Did y'all know that 70% of all mining operations in latin america and the caribbean involve a canadian transnational mining corporation?
Anyway, when I was in college I was constantly going to marches and protests against canadian and saudi mining projects in the Santurbán páramo, one of the most important ecosystems in Colombia in terms of biodiversity, and the source of drinking water of 30+ municipalities in my state, including the city I live in. Ultimately these mining proposals lost their license due to environmental regulations.
But now that our new far-right president elect is looking to suck up to imperial core powers once again, canadian mining corporation Aris mining is interested in re-starting mining projects in Santurbán. Which, would inevitably give cyanide poisoning not only to my city's drinking water, but 30+ other municipalities and indigenous communities.
The imperial core will see one of latin america's veins and go "is anyone gonna cut that open?" and not wait for an answer

Ever since I got a job as a security guard I can’t take heist movies seriously anymore.
Why is that?
Accurate heist movie: The Team is sneaking into a high security facility. An alarm is triggered, they freeze, prepared to knock out whoever responds to the alarm. It takes 40 minutes for someone to respond. When they finally do show up, they shuffle along, annoyed, arms full of 16 bags of pretzels for some reason, and reset the alarm without bothering to check their surroundings. They report that the alarm went off in error. Security control starts a fight about the correct designation of the door. The guard announces that they’re leaving the alarm key in the alarm because it’s always going off for no reason. No one challenges them on this. They shuffle away, leaving an alarm key and several bags of pretzels behind.
The Team knocks out a security guard and steals their radio. The team mimic can perfectly replicate the knocked out guard’s voice. They get caught because they pronounced the name of the company correctly.
The Team disables an alarm. The only way to do this is to rip it out of the wall and disassemble it until it physically can’t make noise anymore. This very loud process is clearly heard by the posted security guard nearby, who rolls their eyes and text their supervisor that the logistics contractors are fooling with the alarms again.
The Team breaks into the facility at night. There they meet a single security guard who is chanting potential names for NPCs in their DnD campaign out loud while they do their patrols. They encounter a fire extinguisher. They pause in their chanting to check that it is properly charged and to apply a sticker that reads, “Anal use only”. This guy is disgustingly good at their job. There’s no way around it, they’re going to catch you. And you’re going to have to deal with the fact that you’ve been had by someone who has a supply of stickers that say “Anal use only” and who unironically wanted to name their NPC shopkeep Mammogrammus.
The Team attempts to bribe a security guard. This is its own post but know there’s no way in hell that would work.
The Team breaks into the high security room and disables all the alarms. Security control sends several guards to investigate why there are no alarms going off.
The Team attempts to break into the high security room but can’t because it’s randomly decided not to let anyone at all in today.
The Team steals a keycard with “””””unlimited””””” access to the facility and gets caught because the computer system that manages keycards randomly revokes access for no reason.
The Team walks past a security guard in broad daylight wearing T-shirts that say, “We are here to rob you”. The security guard does nothing, having seen several people in logistics wearing that exact shirt two days prior.
The Team abandons their high-tech high-concept plans and pull up to the front door in a battered van. Wearing blue jumpsuits or work clothes, they trudge into the lobby carrying bundles of cable and tools, and in a show of class solidarity the security guard just unlocks everything.
A story I once heard from a guy who specialised in security testing for IT. They had been hired to test out the security of the company, and one of the things they were testing was whether they could physically get secure data out of the building.
The guy walked in with a trolley with a wobbly wheel, loaded half a dozen computers onto the trolley so that they were unstable, and walked up to the main security door. At which point, the trolley wobbled and there was an avalanche of computers. The security guard helped him load the computers back onto the trolley and then held the door open for him as he walked out with six computers loaded with company secrets.

First of my glass animal mask series! This was so fun to paint, what other animals should I try? So far I'm thinking owl and deer for a woodland theme🦊🦉🦌
This painting and more have just been added as a print to my webshop :)
things that would exist if intellectual property wasn't a thing
so much cheap generic medication. reverse engineering compounds would be even more financially profitable.
fewer people dead of vaccine preventable illnesses in the global south bc the greatest barrier to distributing some vaccines like hpv is their ip
plant seeds and grafts that come from the plants instead of licensing them. don't invest so much in preventing cross contamination. more localised experimental breeding.
library of the world: every book and journal article in the world could be digitised and be searchable for every person in the world to read regardless of where they live. cheap reprint runs and local translations everywhere.
an online interface where every citation could actually lead to the text in question
freedom from the hell that is DRM software
everytime someone reverse engineered your shitty proprietary software we would all be freed from it instead of them getting DMCA'd
so much hardware would be opened up & therefore made so much cooler.
so many more songs that riff off and sample and interpolate shit from this decade instead of like 70 years ago and more analysis of music that didn't keep getting nuked off the internet
preserving movies and tv shows and games as long as someone, somewhere has the desire to host them
just go publish your fanfic/art/vid as is instead of all us pretending it isn't fanwork or begging the corporation for mercy / licensing
a world without ip lawyers. im getting chills just imagining it.
#there cant simply be no more IP we need acrive anti-IP enforcement #or else companies will still enforce various paywalls and implement DRM a bit differently on their own #same w medical formulas and tech we need active anti-patent anti-privatization enforcement or theyll find a way to withhold it for profit #IP laws are one of the tools of capitalism and colonialism #when increasing capital is the way the entire system works and benefits them #they will always find a way even if you get rid of IP #this isnt to say its useless this IS to say be more anti-IP now and then keep aiming higher
tags via foxpunk
this is true, but right now to break DRM is super mega illegal and setting up shadow libraries sends you to jail, for life. people who hack video games get sent to jail. reverse engineering is illegal as fuck.
if we enforced anti privatisation that would look like forced licensing by nation states, like you discovered a drug? now make the formula and its manufacture public. its much more complicated. simply abolishing the threat of IP litigation protects the people who make the ongoing IP regime bearable and encourage more people to be involved in efforts to liberate intellectual property secrets.
wait babe before we move on i need to break every barrel in this room to check for hidden items
brexit is easily the dumbest political and economic decision anyone has made this century. way stupider than the Iran war. trump could pull out of NATO tomorrow and it would be less disastrous than brexit was. complete economic suicide and it's amazing how remain was not just vindicated but things are worse than they said they would be. and there was even more migration after than before!!! they didn't even win on racism. and it was the willing choice of a huge part of the British population, directly from popular democracy. the English are not an intellectual people, to put it mildly!
