Just helped a really lovely woman in her eighties who told me sheβd been married for fifty nine years. I made an appropriate sound of awe only for her to scoff.
βItβs too long. Fifty nine years is too long to be married to someone. Heβs just always there. Since I was twenty. You guys nowadays get to wait but we had to get married right away back then.β
βBefore we retired I had some damn time to myself but now heβs just there. Watching golf.β
She shook her head, βWe always said we wouldnβt turn into our parents but there he is, watching golf.β After another sigh she repeated, βItβs just too long.β
Placing bets on her husband mysteriously disappearing in the next year.
Additional fun facts about this lady:
Her brother died and left her all his wealth which was apparently substantial. Her husband wanted to put it in stocks etc and she refused but offered to buy him a Porsche as an apology for keeping the money in an account only she could access. The husband declined and she delightedly told me, βMore for me.β
She was bed shopping for herself because sheβd recently bought a bed for her granddaughters boyfriend who works construction because, βHe works so hard, he deserves a good bed.β The setup she bought him cost roughly $3500
She wanted to get the same thing for herself but couldnβt remember the bed, his phone number, or anything except that theyβd bought it at a store up north.
I called the store up north and the manager instantly recognized who I was asking for, knew her name, and told me to take very very good care of her.
She repeatedly told me she could spend $10K on a bed for herself but she wasnβt sure she needed that and I agreed with her. Showed her one model up from his and she walked out spending $7K which she felt was a bargain.
