With ‘Fresh Off the Boat’, ABC will air the first Asian-American sitcom in 20 years

The last time an Asian-American family had their own American sitcom was in 1994. The show was Margaret Cho’s All-American Girl and while the Korean-American comedy was poised to be groundbreaking, it didn’t pull the ratings ABC wanted and was canceled after one season. Cho says executives found it to be either “too Asian” or “not Asian enough,” and the sitcom’s premise changed so many times that by the end of its run, it looked nothing like the culture clash family comedy it originally set out to be. 

This fall, an Asian-American TV family will make television history by helming the first Asian-American-focused sitcom since Cho’s one-season show. Fresh Off The Boat, based on the memoir by chef and restaurateur Eddie Huang, takes place in 1990s Orlando and follows the lives of 12-year-old Huang’s Taiwainesse immigrant family, and the culture shock that ensues when they move from Washington D.C. to Florida. The show stars Randall Park (who Veep fans will recognize as Danny Chung) and is a long-overdue win for Asian-American representation in the primetime slot.

“Why didn’t you stay in Florida? It’s so much warmer.”

“I wanted to see my family. But they don’t want to see me. They don’t understand depression. They treat me like dirt. Homeless people treat me better than my family.”

“And what happened 15 years ago? How did you end up on the streets?”

“I tried to burn myself twice. I had 30 surgeries. I was dead two times, but God brought me back. I don’t know why.”

“And why did you do it?”

“I was depressed. Why you crying?”

“Because you are a beautiful person, and my family is really messed up, and I’ve been very depressed. I think I can understand you.”

“Yes, I am a good person. And when you take people’s pictures, don’t disrespect them.”

“No, man, I won’t. I like people. That’s why I take their pictures.”

“And when you make your portfolio, don’t denigrate people. Let the pictures speak for themselves.”

“I will. Are you safe on the streets?”

“Yes, I am…And now I have $8 to buy me some food.”

“That’s all I have. Next time I see you, I will give you more.”

I promised myself I wouldn’t spend too much time on Tumblr today. I LIED. Let’s boogey:

Guns do kill people. A person (or in some cases, an animal) has to fire it, but the gun killed the person, not the trigger-pulling motion. I believe it was Eddie Izzard who refuted this argument with, “OK, guns don’t kill people… but they do help, don’t they?” (ETA: A reader wisely pointed out that another good response is, “Yes, people kill people, that’s why we want more background checks for PEOPLE, better training for PEOPLE, better mental healthcare access for PEOPLE…)

Car accidents do, indeed, kill more people annually than guns. For now. That number is decreasing thanks to laws and regulations. Because laws and regulations to make things safer work! Shocker.

How are we supposed to advertise to robbers that we own a gun? Put an NRA sign in the front lawn? You can do that and *not* own a gun. If you do have a gun in your home, statistically, you’re MUCH more likely to shoot a member of your family than a robber. Getting robbed sucks, but at least you’re still alive? If you’re truly concerned, a taser in your nightstand drawer will do the trick.
